Time to go back to the basics...Matt reached a Slam final last year, where he manged to wrest a set from Djokovic.

But with #1-with-a-bullet Djokovic still gobbling up Slams, Med grabbing his first, and Zed and Stef waiting in the wings...can Matt steal a Slam before his career finishes?

Walmart Delpo never winning a slam. Period. Propaganda.

Would have to be Wimbledon, I don’t see how he’s going to ever beat Zverev+Medvedev on a HC. Let alone the developing guys like Tsits, Alcaraz, Sinner on HC+Clay.

however depending on health he is probably 2nd favorite for Wimbledon next year (assuming Roger+Rafa don’t go on stem cell therapy and come back with 25 year old legs) and could get his way to a few Wimby finals. And all it takes is one off day from an ancient Djokovic or a nervous NextGen…

I’ll say 55% chance he wins Wimby, <10% chance he wins anywhere else.

Berry is slightly over-ranked. Might reach another Wimbledon final, so who knows?

Would reach zero slam finals in any other era.

I can see Zverev/Medvedev developing just a good enough game to not allow Berrettini a Wimbledon after Djokovic goes out.

Tough chance he win anything outside of grass.

I don't like his chances but he might win a wimby. Has to be in '22-'23. No chance afterwards unless he believes in miracles:sneaky:

He has only lost to Djokovic in slams this year. If he is fit, he can definitely win 1 or 2 Wimbledons. At this stage of his career he is a better grass player than Zverev and Medvedev.

Maybe 1 USO with a good draw and if he has some luck. But I doubt it.

Yes, Wimbledon.

Against common wisdom, I say yes. He's mentally tough (kinda), has weapons and a game plan, which is a rare combination these days.

I see him as the overachieving kind

Exactly. When I consider Berrettini's game, it seems to have some clear weaknesses. The fact that Djokovic hasn't beaten him handily tells me that Nole's overall level has dropped.

Matt managed to take a set off of Novak on all three surfaces this year, which is not an easy feat. And although the little 3 are head-and-shoulders above Matt on one or two surfaces, none of them seem to be better on all three surfaces. It's a bit strange.

He could win Wimbledon because he’s one of really only two next gen players who actually have something resembling decent grass court games (the other is Hurkacz). His weaknesses are too easily exploited on other surfaces so while he could potentially reach more Slam SFs or even Fs, I don’t see him taking any trophies.

He can win Wimbledon, you don't need a complete game to win on grass. A weakness is less crippling there. More difficult on HC and clay with his backhand, though. Novak ate him up at the slams this year by just hitting to his backhand. I'm sure guys like Medvedev and Zverev would've picked up on that.

Not many players throughout history has the unfortune to take on a mission to beat the best player to ever pick up a racket 3 times in a row. If he didn't get injured at AO, he was gonna play Novak in the quarters there aswell. He only lost to Novak at the slams this year who was determined to win everything and take the records. Very unlucky in my book. Many other slam winners compared to Berrettini have had way easier rides. So yea, Berrettini can definitely snatch a slam or two without a doubt. He can play well on all surfaces aswell wich he proved this year. Final in Rome, QFs at RG where he gave Novak a tough fight.

I can name you many more unlucky players than Berrettini who is anything but unlucky.

Propaganda beats basic fact-checking.

About as unlucky as Gonzalez.

Well I'm not into a contest on who has been more unlucky I'm just saying he has played some great tennis all year and performed high level stuff on all surfaces. He only lost to Novak at the slams. So he has become pretty consistent in beating the field. I can only see him improve from now on. He is a force to reckon with.

So many people here go on and on about his devastating good looks and this and that.

This dude's stability on the court is propped up by match sticks.

It's a wonder that they haven't snapped in several places already.

Bizarre—and slightly sad—that he managed to reach the top rung of pro tennis.

I think it's genetics. Some just can't grow calves. I hardly believe Federer, Novak, Raonic, Lopez and players who have really built calves on the tour spends time in the gym focusing on growing their calves. It just grows naturally. For Berrettini it's quite clear he has been unlucky on that part.

And that set was so shjt lol.

Is he as good as peak Anderson, RaoMUG, or Cryic on grass? It’s debatable for all of them.

I wouldn't say he is as good as those players, for sure. On the other hand, those guys played Djokovic and Federer in the final. None of the little 3 have shown themselves to be as competent on grass, and even Djokovic didn't play as well this year as when he beat Anderson.

The competition also matters.

Not sure the bolded will ever not be funny to me.

I'm not sold on Mateo as a Slam champ. I felt like the Wimbledon final will be his top career achievement. He's a big athlete, but that backhand just seems like too much of a liability.

Nice guy though...

And damn is he handsome!

Berrettini will probably win about 5 or 6 Wimbledons (BARRING INJURY), because the other players of his generation are less suited to Wimbledon than him.
For guys like Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas..... Wimbledon is a mystery.

He seems bulkier than Med, Zed, and Stef. I wonder if that hasn't contributed to his injuries.

He could win Wimbledon as he's proven he's consistent against the field on grass. That's something I can't say for anyone on tour bar Djokovic. On other surfaces it would take a cataclysmic opening of the draw.

Once nole is gone for good, yes he can bag in a Wimbledon.

Novak had many of similar falls... And 6 titles and counting... ;)

On topic, who knows if he's gonna win slam/s... His best chance is Wimbledon for sure... If he doesn't bring his game to higher level he can't win slam imo, except at Wimbledon if he serves out win, against favourable draw, something like this year, minus Novak in the final...

Not facing a top 10 player isn't that bad, it's the fact that he didn't face anyone noteworthy in general even for grass standards.
Not that you are wrong, but him beating who would satisfy you, except Novak, off course? He beat Hurkacz, who beat Fed and played solid grass game...

Grass field is bad, bad, bad... for 20 years... Grass is big problem in tennis, not because it's not interesting to watch grass tennis, but because of lack of grass courts around the world and short grass season. Players just doesn't care to specialise for surface to play two tournaments per year... I know, I know, "every court plays the same in this homogenised era", lol...

I agree with that part, it's just funny that specializing on grass if you have the skillset could be very rewarding, cuz it's basically a free Wimbeldon title if you are ahead of the field since no one else is capable of playing on it.

But outside of Next Gen, we had good to great grass players, Hewitt, Roddick, Murray, Tsonga, Cilic, Anderson, Del potro, Raonic, Ancic + Berdych and Dimitrov that one time.

Only 2006-2008 and 2017-2021, minus 2018 were bad in terms of field.
