Does tennis need Zverev to win WTF's?

Tennis has a problem, with a lack of young players catching the imagination of casuals. "Mums and kids in the summer holidays" rather than fanatics like us. A player like Thiem for example appeals to the hardcore tennis fans but not to casuals.

A Zverev win here could change that, announcing himself on a big stage and giving him a confidence boost for next year. Zed already has fans in Germany but tennis needs a young star with worldwide appeal, another Boris Becker.

The most appealing young player to the casuals is Kyrgios, but that's no good if he keeps losing in the early rounds. Casuals love sportspeople who behave like idiots, if they win aswell.

Tennis needs someone else and a Z win could be just what the game needs.

Zverev just got schooled by Novak in their most recent match! Don't expect that suddenly to change even if he somehow finds a way to beat Federer for their potential match-up in the final! His only chance is if Anderson will play out of his skin and pull off a surprise! But even then its Anderson, who will be favorite, not Zverev...

Need? Naaaaah. At least not for now. A few months ago I'd probably say yes 'cause there was at least some feeling of uncertainty in tennis with all big four players with some question marks around them. The "we need someone to step in" feeling was more palpable. Now that Novak is back at the top though, he has bought tennis some extra time. Most fans and media are already forgetting about the need for young talent. They're focusing on the greatness of the big four once again, and think they still have someone that would stick around at the top and carry the sport for another 5 years or so.

I do think Zverev is what tennis needs in the long term, and it would be pretty good for tennis if he wins the WTF this year. Not for the impact it would have in the grand scheme of thing but, more importantly, the one it would have on Zverev's mentality and confidence to finally start doing better at GS level. But if he doesn't win, it's not like tennis would suffer because of it. At least not for now.

I can't stand the guy, but Zverev beating Djokovic in the final would be the best thing for tennis moving forward.

Novak's a legend and the dominant force on tour. A young guy standing up to him here would only make 2019 more interesting. The Khachanov win in Paris was big on paper, but obviously it was a hampered Djoker. Tsistipas beating him in Canada was huge for him, but idk if Novak was ever really dialed in that day. Zverev winning a title match against Novak at his best, at an event he really wants to win, would be a major statement.

Not that it matters anyway...the final will be 6-4, 6-2 Djokovic over Federer.

Zverev winning the WTF would be great for tennis and greatly deserved (Roland Garros QF, Miami F, Monte Carlo SF, Madrid W, Rome F, Canada QF, Shanghai SF, WTF SF or F or W), but what tennis 'needs' is for the other younger players to be more consistent.

This is BS. Give people what they want, and they certainly don’t want Zverev to win, which is fairly obvious from the posts in this very thread.

Zverev would still be unlikeable for most people even if he were to beat ancient Fed and old Djovak back to back.

Not sure how that would help tennis.

So much win here

I hope he wins it because it would be pretty entertaining to see this site have a mental breakdown
Zverev should learn to routine Fed first before he can take on King Novak.

No,we do not need or want it. Terrible, terrible result for tennis and we need AO to roll around as quickly as possible to stop this mad overhyping...

Does anyone care outside of the tennis world though? WTF doesn't transcend the sport like the slams do. Does any casual sports fan outside of the tennis bubble care the Dimitrov won it last year? Do they even know who Dimitrov is?

the reality is that his impact won't really be felt on the level you described until he wins Wimbledon and/or the US Open. that's obviously not fair but it's where the casual tennis fan resides.

Dimitrov backed up his win by doing nothing the following year. So for sure, casuals don't care that he won it.

Zverev needs to back up his win in 2019 but this is a great start in terms of tennis finding a new worldwide star.

Why don't you think that Zverev would have worldwide appeal? His English is good and he seems friendly and approachable. And he doesn't have temper tantrums.
