does tennis shoes help?

I am sorry if the question seems stupid, but i have to ask. Are there noticible difference in using tennis sneakers vs running/b-ball/cross-training sneakers? I know in basketball, grip and ankle support is more important and in badminton grip in the front part of the shoe is important. I am asking because i've been using running shoes for tennis and the hard courts are just chewing them up. I wonder if tennis shoe will help in the durability since it is made for tennis after all. So what is so special and does it help?

and get a good pair too... dont go for the cheap ones.

running shoes are not good. unless u dont move much around the court, but if u play competetive tennis at a 3.5+ lv then you should really consider using real tennis shoes.

I bought some bball shoes when my foot started hurting (lace bite + small shoes). Very confy but the outside wore through in 2 weeks.

Definitely do not use running shoes for tennis. Running shoes are designed for motion in only one direction - forward. Whereas, tennis shoes are designed for moving in all directions, i.e., foward, backward, side-to-side, etc, and for stopping abruptly. You're just looking for trouble by wearing running shoes for tennis. I'm surprised you haven't twisted an ankle yet. Do yourself a favor and get some decent tennis shoes. That would be my advice.

Breakpoint is correct.

In tennis you can pretty much get away with wearing any athletic shoes except running shoes due to the reason Breakpoint pointed out. In addition running shoes are mostly made of nylon mesh uppers and hardly no leather uppers to help with lateral movement support to reduce foot twisting.

I've seen people wear mid top basketballs shoes, but some courts will not allow you to wear soles with dark soles.

I use to work at FootLocker when I was in Highschool and they gave us all these info about different types of athletic shoes and their purposes.

Don't ever overlook the value of a good pair of shoes. If you are in a competitive sport and wear cheap shoes, you will eventually have problems. Nothing is worse than foot and heel problems. You are miserable all day. I have have soft sole inserts I put in my work shoes, helps alot when you are on your feet all day...

If you play tennis with any regularity you should get tennis specific shoes. Running shoes are the worst atheletic shoes you could wear. Bball and crosstrainers I wouldn't wear either although they are better than running shoes.

yeah. i used AF1's hightops for the first month through and they just died. the mouth of my shoe where my toes were ripped. it was horrible. and with chuck taylors, it burns the bottom of your feet. tennis shoes are more durable. tennis shoes for tennis.

I wore out a pair of Gravis Skates in 2 weeks from tennis. Soles were literally flat.

Heh, and I thought they were supposed to be durable.

But then again, I totally wore out my BarricadesIII in 2 months :( :(

When you say Running shoes..you mean Cross training shoes??.

I have been using Nike Cross training shoes and they do a pretty good job. Never really had any ankle problems or etc. They also seem to last long. The other advantage is they are readily available and often come with good deals.

A Decent tennis shoe on the other hand costs in excess of 50+ dollars unless they r on sale. Plus we have to order it from the WEB mostly..

I have recently brought Diadora Champion DA2. Havent used them yet....I will soon once i get a decent handle on my game."Didnt want to loose my first game with that shoe..hence more practice ..".

Haha, nice, MegacedU albeit a bit mean...

Anyways, tennis shoes, as stated, definitely help especially on the courts; you'll burn through the other shoes way too fast and most probably won't even have the stability that is necessary for tennis.

From a durability wise It is my experience that Tennis shoes more or less Last the same duration as Cross trainers. Stability wise they are no different. ..yea...add a material here or there and STATE that TENNIS shoes are better...ha ha... I have used atleast 3 brands of tennis shoes and a bunch of Nike cross trainers...they all ranged from 40-90$. I am yet to see tangible difference between both. Thats my personal opinion. Iam sure a few disagree.

Not Every Tennis shoe is made same and Not every Cross trainer is made same.

That's interesting Indiantwist; in my experience with cross training shoes, they had no durability at all especially if I dragged my toes a bit.

may be it varies from person to person. for me my heels wear out first that too un Uniformly.
Iam also looking at it from a $$ perspective. Some of my tennis shoes costed me 90$ a pair. A nike cross trainer is available (especially with all sales push) for 35$. i can get two Brand new pairs. Then the question becomes does a tennis shoe last as long as TWO NEW shoes?.... stability wise i believe there are lots of choices in cross trainers too.

Iam not advocating that TEnnis shoes are USELESS. Iam saying that the Difference is not as MUCH as one would like to believe. For a True Athlete (like Pros) they have their shoe customized for their needs and hence offer a great performance.
