Does the better server have an advantage in the tiebreak?

That's what people say, and it's always bothered me because I haven't heard a logical reason why that would be true. The better tennis player should win the tiebreak. Why would serving suddenly become more important in a tiebreak than it is at any other point in the match?

The only reason I could think of as to why this could be true is that good servers are more likely to be relatively worse returners, which in turn makes them more likely to get into more tiebreakers. The experience of playing so many tiebreakers somehow gives them an advantage in a tiebreaker, maybe mentally or gives them more of a feel of what their opponent is thinking. A better intuition on how to play it somehow.

But really I don't think that the above would make that much difference, I think what actually happens is that these players who are relatively better servers / worse returners are naturally better on faster courts. Since tiebreakers are an even more likely outcome on faster surfaces, they get into more tiebreakers on their favoured surfaces and stand a better chance of winning them than the relatively worse servers / better returner players who are naturally better on slower surfaces, and since tiebreakers are a less likely outcome on slower surfaces, they do not get to play them where they would be more likely to win them.

Easier to fluke a minibreak versus a game break. Only takes one fluke return or DF to win a TB. Takes at least 4 to win a game.

Therefore a servebot can barely make a TB, but suddenly string together a few good serves and one fluke return and win the set
 
Your sarcasm isn't making good sense. Looks like you're not getting it. Tiebreak should affect your serve a bit less negatively than your return so you can say the serve game is slightly boosted. As I said, it's a relatively minor effect although it does mean something across the whole career.

Concerning the 2019 comment: reason #9000 why the way that match went was a major aberration, typical. An epic clutch failure indeed. Whatchagonnado now.
Sarcasm never does make good sense to those it is directed at. Ohhhh, now I see you're adapting your theory of tiebreak and saying tiebreaks actually lowers the quality of tennis, but in addition, lowers the serve quality a bit less than the returning quality, hence creating a slight service buff. And here I was naive in thinking I could get behind the idea that pressure is what raises the level of the game. But now you're saying every player is inherently a slight choker at heart. Oh how stupid of me for not reading your mind there. But it does make sense you would favour the pessimistic route over the optimist route.

And yes, how dare I favour rallybots who overcome their greater natural choking tendencies in comparison to their less choking servebot counterparts. Btw, doesn't this make Federer even more of a choker in your eyes, considering this natural advantage he has? It's beginning to make sense now why you endlessly call this guy a choker.

Not necessarily. Rarely do players have high 1st serve percentage in TBs.
The huge advantage is winning the first point of the TB. Tim Henman did some research on this and according to him winner of the 1st point usually goes on to win a TB

But even ignoring that, I’d actually challenge that “machine like” play is useful in TBs. In fact some of Novak (and Rafa’s) most damaging losses come from overly passive behavior in TBs and on crucial points (RG 11 SF, AO 12 F 4th set TB, WB 12, USO 12, WB 13, AO 14, WB 14, RG 15, USO 16). Nadal has a laundry list as well of passive play going back to 06, even in matches he won (basically every pre 09 HC Slam match, Wim 08 4th set TB, RG 09, WB 11, RG 13 4th set TB, etc)

There is a level of controlled aggression necessary for success. Novak and Rafa play with higher margin than most but trust me, Djoko is not just playing pong out there - when playing well he tries to take control of the point, dictate and hit offensive shots to move his opponent.

Passivity is never a winning strategy long term.

Great example of this is the Nadal v Djokovic RG 2022 QF TB. Novak was very passive in that TB while Rafa was much more aggressive. I'd say the perfect TB strategy is aggressive percentage play. By that I mean hit safe percentage shots but much harder than usual . Something actually Alcaraz on big points does very well.

That's what I meant. It was Federer UFEing , playing below par TBs. Djoko was meh in 1st set TB, solid at best in next 2, nothing nore. Fed's never lost 2 TBs in a single GS match before this, let alone 3. Hence Djoko being very lucky with that.

He missed one of his most signature shots at 5-3 up in the first set breaker & that's when his slide on important points began.

Not always. TB's require a different mindset since every single point is valuable. Reliable servers with non-attackable serves have an advantage. Those who can manage their game under pressure have an advantage.

This is a very simplistic gauge that doesn’t consider the coasting effect/servebots often faring disproportionately better on per-point than per-game basis (where DR can occasionally come in handy), but it’s a decent clue nonetheless. What’s indisputable is that the big servers do tend to be the ones outperforming their GW%’s in TB’s.

From this list, Isner is probably the best example to adduce. His TB winning % is actually higher than his career W-L % (LOL), so the coasting argument doesn’t really fly. In fact, while he’s an anemic 29-77 against the Top 10, he’s still managed to win over half of TB’s played in those matches (53 out of 105). In standard games in those very same matches, he’s 3.1x as likely to get broken (14.2%) as he is to break (4.6%).

This advantage is already present in games. A point is a point, no matter if it's in a game or a tiebreak. Literally the only difference is the pressure behind the point. The exact same rules of tennis are being played just in a different order and format. But there's pressure is always there to win in tennis. So what you have to be implying is that the pressure in tiebreaks is sooooo unique that it's impossible to replicate in games, to the point where it favors the "better server." Now I wonder if we can create a different format which would magically favour the better returner? :unsure:
It does actually matter. During a set, you count the number of GAMES each has won, whereas in a tie-break, you count the POINTS, so no, a point is not a point. In a tie-break, a point is a game, in a way. Never heard of mini-breaks during a game, but certainly during a tie-break.

You can replicate that pressure in games, too. Have a player serve 0-40, 15-40, 30-40. Never notice how much they usually celebrate when they get to deuce? Or how they suddenly feel relieved? They didn't save the game, it's still on. But they can afford to make one mistake. And not all games add the same pressure. It's not the same to be 1-1, or 5-4.

A different format that would favour the returner? Have a tie-break without second serves, maybe. Add to that, that "let" is also fault.

I'd go and say that the worse server has more pressure in a tie-break. He is, after all, less likely to win points on his serve, hence more vulnerable in the tie-break. But then, it's not about who has more pressure, but about who handles it better. Nadal is not a great server, but has a good percentage of tie-breaks won. Berrettini is great at serving in big moments, Zverev is not.
On top of this, you also have match momentum. If one got to the tie-break after going 5-2 down in the set, obviously has the momentum on his side. Or if they just saved a 6-5 15-40 or something similar.

What I'm saying is correct but you are misrepresenting what I'm saying there and spinning it to match your own meaning. I understand what you're trying to say despite that - there's on average more pressure in tiebreaks points. But that doesn't change the fact a point is a point, no matter if it's played in a game or a tiebreak. Both of those things would drastically change tennis. It sounds like you misunderstood what I meant by a different format. That would totally change what a tennis point is. By differing formats I was referring to the difference in the amount of points needed to win a game or the difference in the amount of points you need to win more than your opponent in a game or whether one or both players serve. In a normal tennis game for example, one player serves, you need to win at least 4 points with at least a 2 point differential over your opponent. That's different from a tie break where both players serve and you need at least 7 points and a 2 point differential over your opponent.

You are assuming the better server's advantage over the opponent on the serve is greater than the better returner's advantage over the opponent on return. In an equal battle, there's no reason to assume that.

However what do I agree with is that aside from it being decided by who the better player is, it's also decided by who deals with the pressure better, and that should be mentioned first and foremost to encapsulate your idea that it's easier for better servers to deal with pressure. But let's not pretend that you don't have to deal with any pressure at any point in any other game either. And that would already be somewhat reflected in the stats and be taken into account when measuring how good each player is. The only difference is the occurrence of pressure points being higher in a tiebreak than in your average game. You could make the case perhaps that it's easier on average to deal with pressure on your service points (strictly relative to a normal service point) than it is to deal with pressure in a return point (strictly relative to a normal return point) perhaps. And I at least understand why people believe that. Still though, it's only a slight advantage if true and a bit overblown.

I'm not simplifying tiebreaks, but it's necessary to, in order to address this servers argument, to make an actual fruitful thought experiment. And that requires assuming all other factors are accounted for (i.e are constant) or are averaged out. That includes these things you have mentioned. I agree with you of course they matter, but it's not relevant to the discussion because I wasn't interested in their effect on a tiebreak.

Remember Novak's tiebreak winning streak a few years back though? He did that by suddenly playing extremely passive and making it a mission to just put every single ball back in the court, and it worked. Not that I think that's a good strategy in general, but I have a feeling the reason why it worked is because it messed with the other guy's head. He suddenly changed the way he was playing. A servebot might also have a similar ability to do this by keeping their service pattern exactly the same until the tiebreak, then bam, completely change it in a tiebreak.

Also, the reason why I called Novak a machine was not to imply he isn't aggressive. It's because he is able to play high percentage tennis and with high aggression. And he never deviates from his strategy, so it ends up looking like he plays the exact same way every single point, in a machine-like manner.

Well I don't want to dispute stats. Only thing is how much of this is affected by the biases I mentioned in the OP. How do these guy's tiebreak % differ by surface/opponent/tournament ?

I personally feel Nadal could be up there with Fedovic had he not been such a choker in tiebreaks since 2014

It worked because of the weak era mug opponents :laughing: Not a big game change either, not like he'd been hitting winner after winner pre-TB in those matches. But when every single opponent shrinks like a mouse the moment they have something of an opportunity to win the set, that is what happens. Some goat tier tiebreak vulturing, if you may.

The tiebreak vs Dimitrov in Paris later that year is another good example. I remember one massive long point where all Djokovic did was hit back the most passive balls and Dimitrov kept blasting away and held a winning position in the point for like 30 shots until he got tired and ran in and hit a forehand to the net. After that point the damage was done. I get you never want to credit Djokovic and always view things like it was their opponent's fault they lost, but when you go on a massive winning streak, the reason behind that is more logically the player doing something right, rather than the entire field as a whole collapsing.

For Isner specifically, there seems to be no plausible alternative to him genuinely stepping it up a notch in TB’s, regardless of circumstance…I mean even against Top 5 players, against whom he’s 11-50 and is broken 5x as often as he breaks…his TB record is close to dead-even (26-28). In his case, the serve-dominance almost certainly helps him more in TB’s than the standard alternating service-return game dynamic. Roddick, Raonic and others also outperform their TB win expectancy to an extent that I have yet to see from a similarly return-dominant player.

Yes I'm assuming the better server's advantage over the better returner's. Tennis is a sport in which the serve has an advantage in each point, as it gives you the initiative of the point.
Errors when returning a first serve are never counted as unforced errors, even when it was a weak and easy first serve. And that is because the returner is at the mercy of the server. OK, this is a bit exaggerated, but I think you get my point. This is especially so, when facing a big server.

OK a point is a point, but the relevance of a point is not the same during a game or during a tie-break. The mechanics of a point are the same: one serves, the other returns, then the server passes the ball etc until one misses, or there is a winner or so.
I'm not disputing that. But the importance of winning a point in a game or in a tie-break is completely different. Big servers often win their games blank or having lost a point at most. Facing a big server and being 30-30, can be a huge chance for the returner, since it might be a "in that game, or never" situation. It is, generally speaking, very difficult to win points on return when playing against a big server, so in the tie-break, where the important thing is winning points, the servers have an advantage.

It's about putting the ball back in. The worse returner might just return in, but not be able to do much more afterwards, since the return was poor (assuming it's the weak part of their game). Let's say a mere %5 chance of winning the point (and that is extremely low). So not many chances, but he gets them consistently (the point is played). On the other hand, the good returner places a much better return, giving him higher chances, but that's when he can put the ball in play. Let's say, he has %40 chances of winning, but he gets to play the point %5 of the returns.

Serve is more secure than serve+1, just because even if not often, errors might happen in the +1, or the return might hit the net and so on. An unreturned serve is safer, and big servers get more of those.

That point is a good illustration. Actually Djokovic wasn't just doing nothing, the rally started more lively but then Dimitrov trapped Djokovic with slicing (as he'd been doing throughout the match, being one of the better slicers on tour), got a couple of passive responses and finally built the courage to attack - only to hit the final volley wide. So it wasn't an easy gift but still ultimately a point Dimitrov should have absolutely won but he gave it away with a nervous error. Quite the essence of Djokoldal's wins altogether - when their opponents aren't outright too weak/passive, they keep making costly errors trying to play proactively. Just not nearly good enough.

It's interesting. A possible explanation, is that these serve dominant players are cruising a bit on the return until the tiebreak comes around because that's where they know they things will inevitably be decided. They put in a slightly better return performance in the tiebreaks which does two things, take their opponent off guard, and make the stats look like they are overperforming relative to earlier games.

Then again Isner winning 50% of tiebreaks against top 5 opponents could not be completely explained by just that considering he is nowhere near top 5 himself.

Not necessarily yes or no. Again you’re asking very vague questions and painting with a huge brush here. No player is a monolith, everyone has quirks. I’m not talking in an Isner v Ferrer scenario which is the dichotomy you seem to be framing the question in.

Let me ask you this. Do you disagree with any of the following? The ability to execute a clutch, accurate serve, in a pressure point, is a positive. Having a higher first serve % is a positive. Having a strong second serve is a positive, and having a serve that is tough to read and predict is a positive. If you can win points on serve easily, more easily than your opponent can on his, then that is a positive. If you have an attackable serve or a lower 1st serve %, then you are relatively more vulnerable than your opponent is on his serve.

Basically, being a better server is a big part of being a better tennis player in general. I’m struggling to understand the point you are really driving at tbh.
I think OP has a pretty bad serve and he wants to be validated that he doesn’t need to work on it. :-D
 
I personally feel Nadal could be up there with Fedovic had he not been such a choker in tiebreaks since 2014

Nadal was up there in his prime, winning exactly 2/3 tiebreaks from 2005 through 2014 Rio (164 of 246). The AO injury hurt both his form and clutch (although he won two more tiebreaks in Rio to make such a perfect stat).
 
That's what people say, and it's always bothered me because I haven't heard a logical reason why that would be true. The better tennis player should win the tiebreak. Why would serving suddenly become more important in a tiebreak than it is at any other point in the match?
I agree and have always said it myself. If anything, then an open set could make a really close to unbreakable server more dangerous, because then he can extend the match to infinity without even having to play actual tennis. And one bad service game is the end against such a player, no matter if after 10 minutes or hours later. Mostly servebots will also make some double faults and easy errors though, so one or two lost service points in a tiebreak are not definitely the end against them.

Players like Karlovic only need to hit slightly more aces and service winners than errors to reach a tiebreak, but then they are still likely to lose them.
 
It's interesting. A possible explanation, is that these serve dominant players are cruising a bit on the return until the tiebreak comes around because that's where they know they things will inevitably be decided. They put in a slightly better return performance in the tiebreaks which does two things, take their opponent off guard, and make the stats look like they are overperforming relative to earlier games.

Then again Isner winning 50% of tiebreaks against top 5 opponents could not be completely explained by just that considering he is nowhere near top 5 himself.

I think most of the time that line of thought passes the smell test (not to say I agree per se…but it’s a reasonable interpretation on its face). Isner is one of the few outliers that makes one pause, cuz the difference is so pronounced that the “cruising” refrain becomes difficult to swallow…occasional cruising won’t raise eyebrows, but when you can win TB’s at a historic rate without a precipitous drop-off against the best, it seems absurd to not play things straight.

My hunch is that the stronger server does have a small advantage in TB’s…but it really is so very murky.

And now it's at 61%. Shows a massive decline to downgrade that stat by 5pp when it was built up from 10 years of clutchness.

So he really does play far below his potential until the tiebreak. But it sounds too farfetched to be true, considering other servebots with comparable frames are nowhere close to that level of difference.

Isner is certainly extra clutch. That alone won't explain it of course... seems like +1 style matters. Even servebots have different games. Isner swats groundstrokes, Opelka plays vanilla rallies, Karlovic had a slice-approach game. Isner's style should logically be optimal for massive bots whose risk of missing raises quite steep the more shots they have to hit.
 
While I do agree there are many disparate factors in play.

You forgot a very obvious reason.

In a tiebreak the pressure on the server is massive. And you don’t get rhythm like in a normal service game, you play 2 return points then 2 service points. So in a tiebreak the ability to hit a clutch spot serve, without the benefit of rhythm afforded by a service game, is something which disproportionately favors better servers who have stronger placement and confidence.
Just my two pennies but I think this sums it up pretty well.
 
He's been poor in TBs vs Novak since 2018.

just 2 matches - Paris 18 and Wim 19.
AO 20 he was hobbled. went for it in 1st set, but issue was not converting after having djoko down 1-4, 0-40, not the TB, anyways.
Of course in b/w he played his last great match at YEC 19 vs Djoko to deny him a YE#1.

My two cents :

Without exception: Every single player in history finds it easier to hold serve than to break serve. Every player ever has won more service games than return games.
With that known, and looking at a tiebreak as a miniature set, the player with the better serve has the advantage because winning a point on serve is naturally easier than winning a point on return. The better server has more reliable means of winning points than his opponent.
