Dominic Thiem "didn't have the courage" to tell me we're no longer working together, I was loyal for 6 years: Fitness coach Alex Stober

After Gunter Bresnik another painful divorce...Alex Strober feels betrayed after six years of collaboration , and Thiem accuses him of making a mistake :

Fitness trainer Alex Stober confirmed on Thursday that he is no longer working with Dominic Thiem. The Austrian has seemingly dropped Stober to make way for "neo-fitness" trainer Jez Green, who has worked with Andy Murray and Alexander Zverev in the past.

Thiem has been tight-lipped about the coaching change, but reports suggest he took the decision after signing with Spanish sports management agency Kosmos.

"I was absolutely loyal to Dominic for six years," Stober was quoted as saying by tennisnet. "And then he doesn't even have the courage to tell me that we are no longer working together."

Seems like this is how most people do things these days. Instead of being a polite person, talking things over and reaching a mutual arrangement, they will just ghost you. No wonder so many people in western societies have mental health problems right now, if this is how people treat each other.

I wouldn't want to talk to the guy either. After such incompetence, and it's consequences, seems like it would be easy to figure out why no call.

Read this yesterday. While Thiem was wrong in not telling it to his face, what the #### was the dude expecting after his advice made Thiem miss remaining of the season?

What happened to the good old your services are no longer required? Does Thiem have to give justifications when he no longer wishes to work with someone? Everybody understands that these jobs are not permanent. I don’t think he did anything wrong.

Being Thiem’s physio, I guess Alex gave the team bad advice, and so it’s prolonged the injury. I honestly didn’t believe he would be back for the US Open, maybe Vienna, but now it looks bad. He might even need to have surgery if the wrist hasn’t healed properly.
Pure speculation, but it could’ve been worse than that. I’ve seen a licensed chiropractor break a rib giving a massage, could it be possible the physio was massaging the area and injured the wrist further?

Typical for someone who did bad work to then complain that they don't know why they were fired. TBH, those are usually the people most deserving of being fired.

I guess common courtesy should have made Thiem address Strober directly on this issue and made it clear where they stood given Strober's long service with the team. Ghosting is always a cowardly and disrespectful way to treat a long-term employee or anybody of long acquaintance for that matter.

That said, I do wonder if talking to Strober directly about this would have made him feel any better? Being told you're sacked is an unhappy experience no matter how the message is conveyed.

You're assuming that Thiem's incredibly vague side of the story is the only one
You are assuming he will fire his 6 year old physio just because of a whim. Most probably Dude did something of a big mistake, Dominic suffered and thus decided to fire him. But he didn't want to directly tell him due to their long term relationship (Dumb , should have directly said that you have been relieved)

Sometimes not giving a reason is better. Truth hurts. Maybe he did not tell her out of compassion.
Oh come on, you should have the guts to break it off in person. That’s just proper etiquette. In the long run it always hurts the other person more if you just ghost them or break up by text because it makes them feel they aren’t even worth a proper “break-up talk” face to face.

So as far as I understand from Thiem‘s most recent interview, he wanted to tell Stober when they would meet next on octobre 4th but someone already told Stober about it.

Doesn't really let him off the hook. He should have told him straightaway precisely to stop the unwelcome news leaking out beforehand.

I'm not assuming anything. You all are assuming that Thiem is telling the truth because he looks so earnest and likable.

Seeing a pretty consistent pattern here with Thiem, breaking up any type of relationship is never easy, some people just are not good at handing it the decent way.
And now all these players have a "team", they just let some flunky deal with it and move on, tennis is a pretty ruthless business. At any level.

Yeah, I know. I was just being a bit sarcastic. I do feel that he lacks courage, both on and off the court.

According to Thiem the reason is that the doctor suggested him to rest longer but Stober thought he knows better and advised Thiem to start training again and told he would be ready at the US open. But then the injury started again and Stober didn‘t even admit that it was his fault. Now Thiem maybe even needs surgery which would mean he will not be able to play AO.

Definitely want more details. A lot more details. He had a freak injury with a sheath detachment in his wrist. He immediately retired from the match, went to the doctor and put on a cast/brace and stopped playing. He even showed himself practicing left handed so that he wouldn't be using his right hand at all.

He obviously wasn't going to be ready for the US Open and even at the time it seemed like his season was probably done. It doesn't take a medical degree to figure that out. What advice could his physio possibly given to make it worse that he's now taking the blame for the long rehab? Did he tell Domi "nah, you're fine. Get that thing off and start doing some push-ups." If the doctor told him he needed rest and his physio told him he was fine to start training again early, then him and Thiem are both colossal idiots.

You have a source for this, we can shut these trolls up for good.

Maybe Thiem can fire the people that invented polyester string. Plus it seemed like the guy seriously overdoes the training regimen.
Most top players are one mishit away from poly induced arm trauma.

Are you really saying that without a notice you'd fire people who've worked with you for 6 years loyally? We are basing this story on some assumptions here and passing on judgments we do not have enough facts for. The incompetence is truly one serious thing but the incredibly difficult decision making process of what/how/when to do after a serious injury may be another.

What an absolute unmitigated disaster Thiem’s 2021 has been. Start to finish it quite literally could not have gone any worse barring him going to prison.
I remember saying something like this a few months ago, before the wrist news, and at that point some people disagreed. But there can be no doubt anymore.

From what I know of Thiem, he's a thoughtful, calm and level headed guy. So, I'm guessing when the details come out, his fitness coach will wish he had not broached the subject.

Thiem was obviously extremely hurt/angry over what happened and what his fitness coach did.. He didn't want to talk to the guy. Maybe he had someone else tell his fitness coach...or just didn't renew his contract. So yeah, I'm giving the benefit of doubt to Thiem.

What a tool. What Thiem said, if you care to read between the lines, is that the fallout was such that no one (then part of his team) could be left in doubt of the status of his working relationship with his coach.

This is like you catching your girlfriend cheating and then being accused of not talking it out and being supportive in the break-up. This victim (the ex-coach) is trying to appeal exactly to your type of psyche in order to save face in the industry.

Not an excuse. At least send him a text message explaining the situation. Thiem has developed a reputation for this kind of thing. Whether he cares or not is a different topic.
