Dominic Thiem, what if?

kangaroo1973

Semi-Pro
Dominic Thiem is at the end of his great career.
Unlike overhyped Zed, Tsitsi , Shapovalov or Auger he has managed to compete against big 3.
Having beaten Djokovic couple of times at slams and pushing still decent Novak to the limit 4 years ago at his pet slam.
Beating Nadal several times on clay and few grand slam matches were on an extraordinarily high level -2018 USO and 2020 AO.
I think that he could have had Wawrinka like career who would have delivered at slams, but underachieve at BO3- his masters level record is ehhh. Except WTF, where his battles against Novak are legendary imo. Brutal power vs incredible defence, great matches which I can highly recommend. I am kinda sad he lost 2020 WTF to Medvedev, Thiem should have snatched that one

Well do you think, that healthy Thiem would have won more slams and had Wawrinka-esque like career and pose a threat to Sinner Alcaraz duo?
Because as of now, there is literally noone on the tour who can pose a significant challenge to Sinner and Alcaraz. And I think Zoning Thiem would have been capable of that

I think Thiem's game was very fitness based. Even if he was healthy, I think he would have started to peter out about now.

A younger Thiem could have challenged them. But that's probably true of a lot of players.

You say Novak was “still decent” in 2020 like he hasn’t been ‘decent’ after that? Lol

Thiem age between 2017 to 2020 - 24 to 27.
Zverev age between 2017 to 2020 - 20 to 23.
Shapo age between 2017 to 2020 - 18 to 21.
Tsitsi age between 2017 to 2020 - 19 to 22.

Who is more overrated

Right place right time Clay courter Thiem or the other 4?
Dude got to play weakest years in tennis and still had absolutely nothing to show for it. If not for covid, he would retire slamless.

That version of Zverev was probably the best version. Same with Tsitsipas. I think those versions would beat the current versions.

Zverev best year was in 2021 and even this year he has played far better than 2019.

Let's talk stats, let's not get opinion out of nowhere.

Zverev holds and breaks
2017 85 + 23 = 108
2018 82.6 + 27.8 = 110.4
2019 79.9 + 25.7 = 105.4
2020 82.8 + 27 = 109.8

Now
2021 86.1 + 27.5 = 113.6
2024 89.3 + 22.3 = 111.6

None of the years Zverev in the past was as good as he was post 2020. And he has become far better player in BO5 now than at mere age of 20 like in 2017.

In Bo5, I'll grant you he's improved in terms of consistency. Still, his stats from year to year haven't changed that much. Zed's won roughly 84% of his service games from the start of his career.

I have given all the stats that matter to me. Those are included in yours as well proving Zverev best years are in 2021/24. He didn't have Fed or even Nadal to play in these years. So he can't do what Thiem did then.

For much of 2022 - 2023, he was recovering from a huge injury. He had wins over Fed and Djokovic in 2018, and won 5 titles in 2017 and 4 in 2018. Only 2021 was a better year.

2024 he thrashed alcaraz who was my co favorite for AO. I won't worry about 2024.

And he made it back to his second final. But for the 2021 - 2024 range, I wouldn't say it was overall better.
Yes range it's not better. I would even say his 2022 first half was not better. It was just rg where he looked like a champion. 2023 was atrocious but it was due to serious injury. But level wise he has gone up since 2021

A new term Next Genetation 4

NG4 = Sinner, Alcaraz, Zever & Med

Thiem had a helluva career! But he was not as good as Nadal on clay, nor as good as Djokovic on HC!
