Very good technically, and a good athlete too. Mental frailty was the main issue through his career, except for a couple of years in 1991 / 1992, where he reached 11 finals, won 7 of them, plus a Davis Cup and 3 quarter finals in slams to boot. He seemed to have acquired enough self belief by then to challenge the best. Unfortunately, he started to slightly decline physically shortly thereafter.
Also worth mentioning that he was a very good doubles player. In 1991, his best year, he ranked 3rd for doubles shortly before ranking 4th for singles. I don't think many players can claim this.
He was my favorite French player of that era: more class (as a person) than Leconte, and much cleaner technically than Noah.
