Donald Young & Hype

I am astounded to see that Donald Young is still getting Wild Cards into tournaments. The investment in his success, which is now a foregone conclusion that he will never be a top 20 player, is now coming at the cost of other up and commers that have more potential, ie. Jess Levine. I think it is a disgrace to tennis to continue to let Donald Young into tournaments which he is clearly not able to compete. Almost every successful top 20 player by age 19 has accomplished far more than DY. He needs to be sent back down to Challengers and earn his way into the ATP draws at this point. No more free rides for DY!!!

People still tune in when he plays, whether he's winning or not. He won't be as bankable as time goes on if he doesn't start winning, but right now he still brings in the ratings for tournies. That's why he gets wildcards. $$$

Viewers????

DY doesnt make it far enough in the tournaments to even get on TV...who's watching him? I don't think that's why he gets WC. I think he gets WC because McEnroe's agent is his agent and as such, has some pull as to getting him into tournaments.

jesse levine is two years older than him and Donald is ranked higher anyway...plus what other Americans would you give a wildcard to.

Levine lost to freakin Alex Bogomolov in qualifying. At least Donald lost to someone who was directly admitted into the draw.

...Im saying this as someone who has ripped DY before. He attitude sucks and has absolutely zero mental toughness. If he gets down, its over.

He is a recently turned 19 year old. He still has a chance to succeed but really when it comes down to it there is nobody else right now that can really be seen as an ace prospect. Jesse is a nice player capable of strong showings but even he, even though he is older, has shown less than Donald...Ryan Harrison down the road seems to be a better prospect than DY but he is even further away than DY is right now.

Also when Donald is on, his game is really fun to watch and different than the other Americans.

How about you do some research before typing mindless drivel? How many wild cards had Donald gotten this year? Don't know? I'll tel you, Two. How many tournaments has Donald played in this year? Don't know? I'll tell you, 18. So out of 18 tournaments he has gotten 2 wild cards and in one of those two wild cards he should have gotten a direct entry anyways but probably signed up for the tournament too late. You can now take your foot out of your mouth.

Very cool post! I mean, really, the kid is nineteen. I remember how totally together and mature I was at that age. He's a talent, he's trying, needs to work on a few things, but give me a break.

I recall how long it took James Blake to develop.

Not anymore, DY left IMG at the beginning of this year.

This thread needs to be combined with the other thread on the exact same topic.

The one was Cincinnati, which gave WC's to Young, Isner, Levine, and Safin in the main draw, Chase Buchanan got one into the qualifying because he's from Columbus. To me that's a good use of the WC's if I was the tournament Director.

Hey Edberg505...

Without doing too much research...DY received at least 4 Wild Cards this year...and I am sure there are others. See below and check for yourself if you don't believe me....

Pacific Life Open/Indian Wells
Cincinnati
Washington
Newport

He's pretty much right on the top 100 players in the world. He doesn't really need WC's with that ranking to get into the big tournaments....

I stand corrected it was 3 wild cards. I did not count the IW WC. He did not receive a wild card for Washington and he didn't even play in the main draw Miami because he was in the qualifying draw. I didn't count Newport because I didn't even know he played in Newport. Cincinnati was one of the 2 I mentioned before. Like I said do your research.

Yeah, I guess I could have just said that too. It would have been much easier. But it seems like some people just find the need to trash DY.

People HATE him and it is ridiculous.... The kid has talent and is in the top 100...give credit where credit is due, right?

Yeah, that seems to be the situation. But I'm just waiting for him to prove all these people wrong so I can bring out special "fail" photo just for them.

The point is...he got 2 Wild Cards into ATP Masters series... which after losing in the first round in 3 of 4 tournaments before Indian Wells he should not have been given a WC into that ATP Master's tourny and before Cincy he lost in the first round in 6 of 7 tournaments (including a Master's he was given a direct acceptance into -Canada) he should not have been given this WC either. He also lost to low rank players in these tournys for the most part in the first round.

MAIN POINT: He was not deserving of the WC into any Masters tourny based on any criteria (wins, ranking, 1 unexpected win of a tourny, etc.)...in fact his first round losses should have made the ATP Master's tourny directors put DY in the qualies for sure.

He's a loser.

Didn't he beat that guy, ummmm...what's his name...oh yeah, Tommy Haas that just made it to the semi's of a recent tournament in DC??????

You must really like the taste of your foot. HE QUALIFIED FOR THAT TOURNAMENT IN CANADA!!!! And if he isn't deserving of the WC based on his wins and ranking then who is above him? And by the way, the WC he got at IW was well deserved as he made it farther than any other wild card recipient losing to the current #1 in the process. Who's the real loser here?

Haas was injured and tired. Young won because of Haas' play not his own. His record this year is abysmal. There is no denying that others are more deserving than him to be getting WC who had to qualify...no if and or Buts about it....

He also be F. Lopez. I guess he was injured too. And I'm still waiting to hear these more deserving players.

Ever since Haas has had his shoulder surgeries he cannot play more than 1 or 2 tournies in a row without pain in his shoulder. He had played a lot of tennis for himself by the loss to Young, he wanted a break but played anyway...he didnt care about that match.

No matter how you cut it, DY is not deserving of the WC into Master's series this year based on all his first round losses.

I fail to understand why people want to defend him and give him preferential treatment at this point in his career. When he was 16 or 17 or even early 18, I can see giving him a chance based on Juniors results, but by 19 now and all these first round losses...he proved he did not deserve any preferential treatment.

His 100 ranking is from last US Open where he won 1 match and then Gasquet could not play and withdrew from the match and so DY found himself in the 3rd round and received 75 points. Without Gasquet withdrawing, DY is a player ranked way below 100 in the world.

You dont give players outside the top 100 a WC into the Masters unless they have proven themselves...he has not.

If a tournament wants to give Young a WC, I don't see the problem. It's up to the organizers.

And he's a promising player: he will live up or not to the expectations, but he's a legitimate player, not the organizer's nephew or something like that.

I'm going to agree. He has received a lot of preferrential treatment, which he does not deserve.

Additionally, he needs to straigten out his cap. When he wins a title, then he could put it anyway he likes. Until then, it looks ********.

You're just another hater that doesn't like a kid because of the way he wears his cap...or is it something else? You have said it many times, and I think you are the one that is ******** for blasting a talented kid for his choice of style.

Is Michael Phelps ******** for listening to rap/hip-hop prior to his meets? I mean Michael Phelps listens to gangster music. Did you know that? And, Michael Phelps doesn't wear his cap straight either....

He's 19. How much longer you going to wait?

I got to see him play two matches in DC this past week. I enjoyed watching him. Very talented kid, yet he is just too physically small. I think he did a great job hanging in the match with Isner, but even with Isner's really weak groundstrokes, he was able to overpower DY.

I got to see Haas and Lopez as well this week. Lopez is playing pretty horribly. Haas, I think, is overdoing it. I saw him out on the practice courts more than anyone else (save Spadea, who just retired from a match today I see), and I don't think his shoulder can take how much he is practicing.

The shoulder issues plus his one hander is just going to keep causing him pain.

Again, I enjoyed watching DY play, but I honestly don't think he has the physicality to hang with the big boys.

You're right. And, the organizers are there to sell air-time on television. And if a kid out of Atlanta that has some promise that is a minority shows up on a screen--a lot of people may take the time to watch.

O. Rochus has THUMPED the mighty large Safin on more than one occasion....

True, I'm just relaying my own observations.

Isner is no Safin, however (not sure if I mean that as a compliment or not).

Overall, though, who has had the more successful career...O. Rochus? Or Safin?

I'll answer your question with a question...

"Who maximized their potential?"

@Topaz:

I have seen both play in person. IF DY had the right people surrounding him--he has the talent to surpass Isner any day in the groundies department. DY can thump serves in the 130's...

Ohhh! Touche!! Well played sir! Lol!

He is definitely VERY talented, that was obvious in watching him. He is 19...if he is going to change his 'camp', sooner would be good!

Like I said, he did a great job hanging in there in that match, and it was obvious he had the better groundies.

Well, if someone could come along and sever the umbilical cord between DY and his parents, he'd have a shot. If not, he'll hover at 100 forever...time will tell.

why are you being racist against white swimmers???

Wow--congrats! I have never been quoted out of context like that before. Now, I feel like a politician! Way to use the delete button! You should have quoted the whole thing and not just he selective point I made in regards to your original racism, you ******....

I watched the 1st set of the Isner Del Potro match, and, surprisingly, Isner's groundies looked good to me. He actually out raliied DP on a couple of occasions.

racism?? just because I said he needs to straigten out his cap???

OH! I get it. Since he is black>>> no one has the right to criticize. Right???

Like I said, he need to straigthen out his cap. He looks like a ******, and so does ANYBODY else who does it.

Additionally, I'm not the only one who feels he has gotten preferrential treatment, which he DOES NOT DESERVE. DEAL WITH IT, AND STOP BEING RACIST TO WHITE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL WINNERS.

I don't mean 'weak' as in without power...I mean weak as in he only has the big forehand, and is VERY vlunerable on the BH side. His groundies 'hide' behind that big serve, though I do think his FH as improved since last year. He needs to develop some kind of backhand and also some variety on the FH side if he's going to go to the next level, IMO.

Gasquet's retirement gave him 40 pts. He has 462 pts total, with only 422 he'd be WAY WAY down to 115. Great point.

NO. You don't have the right to criticize DY on how he wears his hat--it is his choice, not yours.

Secondly, anyone that knows me know that Michael Phelps is my inspiration. And your comment towards DY was made in wrong manner and I was emphasizing that the greatest athlete on the planet (Phelps) probably listens to more extreme hip-hop music than DY.

Third, your post count does not give you the right to try and bully anyone on this board or come across as a "know it all".

Fourth, just because you come from a great community and club and come from money does not give you the right to blast DY for how he wears his hat.

Fifthly, a 4.0 hacker should not be giving review on rackets they don't know how to maximize the potential of....many have blasted you in other threads, should I go on?

I suggest that you don't put more fuel on the fire you started...

Actually, I've seen Drakulie hit...not even remotely close to a 4.0 hacker...think more 4.5/5.0ish.

Stepping aside now.

Yes I do, and I'll do it again. Watch>>>>>> he LOOKS LIKE A ******!

now stop being racist.

I bet your wife is hot--as you give no thought to personality...just looks. Funny you calling me a racist with me having a daughter that is a minority.....aren't you the ******.

USTA has given D. Young too many WC already ,just because he's black he gets in more tournaments . It's no longer the question about his skills or lack of,it's all about the color of his skin... there are many other deserving competitors who would benefit ...but I have to agree with you ,If a tournament wants to give Young a WC, . It's up to the organizers. The new USTA ceo is a businessman and he want to sell his product the best way and to make the most money possible. people still want to see a black guy hit a tennis ball because there are not too many black guys out there... so too bad for the others more deserving young players...

We all have friends we have to stick with, don't we? Even those that judge others off how they wear their hat. Me, I'd rather stand alone for the right reasons....but to each their own.
