I have recently posted about a new racquet I bought online, a Graphite CGX 25.

This racket was Donnay's competitor to the Wilson Sampras Prostaff. The Donnay Graphite C.G.X 25 is a midsize, thin constant beam (17 mm) and very solid, 16*19 string pattern. Heavy and stable (363gr.strung), came out in the mid 80's and was made in Belgium.

The number 25 stands for 25% bigger then the standard 70 sq.inch so it will have a 87,5 sq" head.

The racquet came with a broken string and somewhat banged up.

I just restrung it with a Head FiberGel Power 17, a soft forgiving string that goes nicely with this heavy small head racquet, and put on a new synthetic grip.

Here are some pictures. Can't wait to hit the courts with it.

I used the CGX25 from 1982 to 1983 and broke two out of three frames. I still have one, although mine all had a blue line running around them instead of the red one. If I remember well, there were two different weights offered. Mine weighs in at 382g strung. I still pull it out every now and then but it seems underpowered for the weight it has. I now use the Pure Storm Ltd which has a lot of the same feel and playability but with less weight.

Yeah...its just a cool racquet for the collection, not for using on a day to day basis.

I have two of them, one with red stripes, another with blue. Also my first composite racquet, Donnay Bjorn Borg Graphite Club 25, is from the same mold. I like to hit with them occasionally.

    There's a keeper!!

I still have my first pair of graphite racquets; Donnay's Pro Cynetic 1. I demoed this one along with the PS 6.0 85, maybe around the summer of '83, and for some reason liked the Donnay. SOOO glad I got these back from a pal a few years ago - he borrowed them for a bit and then stashed them in a closet for a long time. Taking these out for an occasional hit against a backboard and some practice serves is truly a trip down amnesia lane. Very funky!!

I don't remember ever spotting the CGX 25, but the colored blocks on the hoop are consistent with how Donnay was apparently decorating their gear back then. I even remember hearing that back then, the Belgian government owned the company for a while, but I sure don't know any details on their history.

Can't even remember at what sort of tension these things should be strung. I actually did a wood racquet for a friend last summer and that was an absolute guess - maybe low 40's with 17 ga. syn. gut...
