I notice that some tennis players wear 2 pairs of socks, and i was wondering if there was any specific reason in doing this

they keep your toes nice and toasty :) ,,, and stinky afterwards,, like hot-pockets :-(

but seriously, maybe its for shock absorbtion, imagine playing year after year on hard courts, i play for 5 hours and i am crying for mama afterwards

i only wear one layer of socks and sometimes, my feet hurt after playing for an extensive amount of time

Thank God for the day I went to two pairs and went a half-size up. That was about 20 years ago. Not a blister since that day. Not a black toe. No plantar fasciitis, no heel pain either.

that is the reason for wearing 2 socks (on each foot...)! it gives more cushion and padding for your feet, toes, heels, ankles. i also like wearing 2 pairs of socks. when i don't, i really feel the wear and tear my feet take when playing b ball and tennis. i think doubling up socks is the way to go.

I always wear double layer of socks, double layer of thorlo thick tennis socks. mainly cause i have some knee problems and trying to get the max cushining. but what are some disadvantages with this practice ?? other than your feet getting too hot. i have not had that problem yet.

I always wear a tennis specific sock first then a normal sports sock over that. It provides more support without making it hotter, just makes it more comfortable and no blisters either!!!

I have worn 2 pairs of socks for basketball and tennis for the past 7 years. Gives a lot more cushion and I never get any blisters. Also, I have skinny feet so most shoes I get are wide so it helps me fill out the shoe more.

Same thing here, although it only happened a year ago (I'm only a teenager after all. Be a little wierd if I said I changed 20 years ago... ).

I think I'll have to try this.
Will this make socks wear out faster?
Also, what types of socks do you guys recommend doubling up on?
Long? Short? Cushiony? Thin?

It seems to me that if tour players wanted more cushion in their shoes, they would simply ask their sponsors to build them shoes with more cushion. There may be another reason for two layers of socks.

I didnt read all the posts so i dont know if this has been written, but i use two socks on tournament matchs for two reason: cushioning and sweat absorbence. This cushioning is about the toes/nails against the shoe not about knees or ankles or anything like that. The sweat abosortion is in the "above the ankle" part of the sock, to avoid the sweat to get to the foot.

Hmmm, I wear two pairs of socks, though they are low-cut. The first pair is wicking material and very thin, and the second pair are a bit thicker for cushioning.

I've never heard of this in the pros!

I know pros tape their feet up appearing to have two pairs of socks. I didn't know about Djoke and Hewitt!

Okay I will try wearing two pairs.

Before I put on the two pairs, I tape. I'm amazed I can move my feet at all.

A lot of athletes in all sports wear double socks. Provides a little bit of extra cushioning - though with today's shoes, it isn't probably always necessary - and in many cases prevents blisters.

A good many serious runners always wear double socks.

Just make sure to adjust your shoe size if necessary. If there is already a little bit of extra room in the toe, you may be fine, but if there's no extra room and you have to jam your feet in with 2 pairs of socks, then you should move up a half size. Your feet need a little room to slide, or you may experience some joint problems, just as if your feet slide around too much.

One time I wore my Smartwool snowboarding socks to play outdoor tennis in 40 degree temperatures. They kept my feet nice and toasty and have that moisture wicking ability. They are padded nicely too :p

I've never worn two pairs of socks because my feet sweat a lot, plus I like to keep my laundry pile as small as possible. A friend of mine wears two pairs of socks and he claims that the extra pair provides added bounce, which gives him a quicker first step.

I tried it today, Albeit the fact that my shoe was too small wearing two layers, it was very comfortable. There was some cushioning, but the greatest effect was that my toe did not jam into the front of the shoe. and it was nice and warm, because it was 40 degrees outside

i remember doing this when i played soccer, i would wear(in the order):
ankle brace,
short sock,
shinguard with ankle padding on sides,
long socer socks
cleats;
my foot was so thick at that point i could almost not laze it up,
it was just something i had to do since i rolled my ankles just about every week,
before you ask how it felt, let me just say that you all know already!!,
un-notisable during the heat of things, when you have to get to the ball you can have center blocks on your feet, you're still gonna get to it

Hunh! So, I did my regular tape on left foot, two pairs of socks routine last night, and ended up with a pretty large blister on my right foot! That's never happened before...I think this thread jinxed me! ;)

I used to wear double socks for a pair of shoes that were slightly too big. It did feel nice at the beginning until I started noticing one big problem - the outer sock would stick to the insole and the inner sock would slide against the second layer thus causing my toes to jam into the toebox with sudden stops.

I threw the pair of shoes away.

I use Torlo level 3's. These are a very thick one layer sock. They are OK but they have a tendency to slip.

I also have some socks that I found (and really like) for running. They are called "Wrightsocks". They are a double layer sock made from what seems like Cool Max fabric. They really protect against blisters and are thinner than the Thorlo level 3. Plus, they don't slip like the Thorlo's.

FWIW

a shoe can provide you with cushio only in spot areas, most often the sole. a double layer socks cushion very well your feet all around: if you run alot on the court you will notice that the sidways strain on the shoes is tremendous.

Wow! TWO pairs of thick Thorlo socks? Do you have to buy your shoes 2 sizes bigger to get them to fit? Also, don't your feet feel like they're swimming in quicksand with all that squishiness? I feel that way even with just a single pair of Thorlos.

I agree. I don't think it's about adding cushioning. I think it's more about preventing blisters and black toe.

more stable, prevent blister, more suitable fit, slight shock absorption..
But~! a little stuffy and hot.

I've only started wearing two pairs after finding some comments about it here on the boards. Since then, I've been wearing thin low-cuts inside my crews, and find that they work great.

I used to wear as many pair of socks as necessary to get a tight fit with whatever shoes I was wearing. I believe this is what keeps away blisters - a nice tight fit, so no sliding around within the shoe.

Started with one when the shoes were new, and then moved to two and then three when they stretched out...
