Double standards? Fognini fined just $3,000 for saying Wimbledon should be bombed while Kyrgios gets $8,000 in fines

Do you think the punishment is fair?

Court 12 is probably a fast one, fabio would of smoked Tennys on the stadium courts.

I still find it amusing each court plays at a different speed yet the "popular" players get to always play on the same one.

They put Djok on court 2 a few yrs ago and he lost.
Don't they call Court 2 the graveyard of champions?

I mean yesterday alone #1 Barty lost there and #3 Pliskova. Two days earlier Zhang beat Wozniacki, RBA beat Khachanov and Goffin beat Medvedev (all upsets in terms of ranking).

On top of that, Opelka beat Stan there, Davis beat Kerber, Querrey beat Thiem and Parmentier beat Sharapova all this tournament!

Thats why i dont like this tournament as a grand slam. Dont tell the officals how great the grass is or how great they are doing and your suddenly on a court that favors your opponent.

Queery was the one who beat djok on court #2. Nadal should be butt kissing (like he is) and hope fed and serena arent playing at the same time or he will meet the same fate.

Hard to get back into position when you have to climb over the back rail after hitting a return :)

This is a very good point.

Rankngs should matter ... Nadal #2, Fognini ahead of no name Brits and whatever they like to see on other courts ...

Fognini worked so hard all year and yet he was demoted to court #12 that is of inferior quality ... enough to make him upset and lose the match !!!

Carlos is still my favorite, he dont take that crap

Disagree with OP's notion that Kyrgios should be fined less. His attack on the umpire was deliberate, lengthy and unsavoury (to say the least). The umpire earned less than Nick's bar bill.
So i'm not saying that Kyrgios should be fined "less" but that Fognini should be fined more.
They can chuck a $20k fine at Kyrgios for all I care but as long as Fognini got more. I just think what he said was worse.

Who cares? Fog was mumbling something silly as he always does. Nick was kinda direct. It's not a big deal. They both got charged peanuts.

Details unknown. "Damaged" a practice court. More than likely another tantrum. A $10,000 fine sounds like she really must have trashed the court.

Hurt the ground, chairs and nets are easy to fix. She probably tried to break a racket, realized the ground is soft and dug a hole. Had one of those multistrike moments.

Pretty low class to bang your racket on grass, especially in practice.

Then again, when godzilla walks in tokyo there is also damage to the grounds :giggle:

What could she possibly have done during PRACTICE ???????? Soooooooooooooooooooo out of control  Just hope she doesn't bite the ump's head off by end of tournament lol.

Wimbledon takes their grass courts very seriously. Probably just smashed the racket a number of times into the ground. I think another player did something except in their actual match and got a fine this year.

Im thinking she smashed it in the playing area. 10k isnt bad though, you can fold a $100 bill and it wont cover the area of wimbledon grass you place it on.

If the court is retired for the rest of the tournament we will know she was trying to dig a pool :)

What kind of person hits grass? Its living, does she beat her dog at home as well when mad?

When something ridiculous like that is said, it's obviously not a serious statement. Rich tennis players don't have real desires to bomb places.

It was harmless in reality and that's why it's a smaller fine.[/QUOTE

Preach it, sir!
I take my hat off.
:)

Found this:

Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka was fined $10,000 (£7,990) for “unsportsmanlike conduct,” whilst $5,500 (£4,400) was levied against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev for the same offence after he attacked the grass court with his racquet and refused to shake the umpire’s hand at the end of the game.

The constant outrage at Serena yet defence for every man that isn't Serena is truly appalling. Why not just call what Fognini did disgusting? Why is it so hard for you guys to criticize the men's tour? I'll admit what Serena said was awful but what Fognini said was also awful and yet people here are defending a guy who said a bomb should be dropped on Wimbledon. Strange.

Every man that isn't Serena? Serena isn't a man ;)

You're just upset that Serena gets criticised so much. IMO she's earned it. I used to defend her, but don't anymore after what she oulled in that USO final against Osaka. Now that was disgusting.

Fog's comments are just silly, as he was obviously not serious.

It's completely different to directly attack someone, especially a referee.

With all these fines we can safely say tennis is denigrating into a game for yobbos and hooligans.

It’s reassuring, to see Williams and her fine, are doing their bit for equality of the sexes and ensuring that women are lowering the standards too.

This is a bit ****.

Fognini said a bomb should be dropped at Wimbledon while Kyrgios said “Wow, you’ve got so much power up there,” Kyrgios told him. “Look at you! Look at you!” And then “You’re no-one. You think you’re important. You have no idea what’s going on. You’re a disgrace.”

The Wimbledon chief executive defended Fognini saying “it’s in the heat of the moment and I accept the apology”.

Can you imagine that excuse being used for other players like Kyrgios or Serena?

Fognini is still on probation for his misogynistic comments against a chair umpire back in 2017 so it’s surprising his punishment is so small considering he is still facing a ban.
definite double standard also Kygios has a bigger profile. When is Nadal going to be held to reasonable time between points?

Aussie Darcy’s outrage is so palpable, that it can be heard in London all the way from Australia.

It's fine if you think there is a double standard. But stop with the bomb threat nonsense, OK ?

My sense is Serena triggers many people so it would not be the same. Also any member of the Big 3 will get attacked using any pretext to score points in The GOAT Wars. No one is emotionally invested enough in The Fog.

Thankfully there is one person who is always ready to protect the fog against the might of the AELTC:

Is it possible that they are harsher on KG because he's a frequent offender so they're keeping him on a shorter leash so to speak? (As opposed to a distinction between the 2 behaviors, which, I agree were both inappropriate)

It's weird to see a human being perpetually indignant, while everyone else cringe's at her latest victims complex outbursts. Ofcourse, she would move heaven and earth to defend classless acts by the Serena's of the world.

Definitely pocket change, just strange that Kyrgios gets alot more than Fognini despite saying less.

And what do you mean by bionic-dom?

But Kyrgios did say a lot more. He kept on and on at the umpire. Fognini just said something stupid in Italian almost to himself which, unfortunately for him, was picked up by an Italian journalist.

So saying a bomb should be dropped which kills people is not terrible? I guess common sense is lost on you. Never thought people would defend such comments, only on TTW.
Okay, literally meant Fognini’s words would have been worse, of course. But what matters is the context. I think you are not aware of how common some seemingly violent phrases are, where (just due to the manner of saying it) everybody knows that it’s just a hyperbolic expression of infuriation, sometimes even brought with a sarcastic smile.

Back then in school, how many times someone said something like: "This location should burn down with all teachers being inside!"

Everyone just knew that no one would ever mean that literally. You could say that in front of the most sensible girls, no problem. Even if a teacher himself heard it, it was not that much of a big deal. Questioning a single teacher’s personal authority (while obviously not joking) was much worse.

Fognini is ALSO a frequent offender and is currently still on probation for his misogynistic comments...

Of course. Nick has a reputation for being an uncouth youth, so obviously he will attract harsh penalties in a fusty boomer sport like tennis

But he wasn't really. He didn't say "i'm sorry for what I said it was wrong". He pulled the classic "sorry if anyone was offended by what I said". Not really an apology and puts it more onto the people who disagree with what he said.

That isn't an apology at all. It's like doing monkey chants at a football game then saying sorry if anyone was offended. The word "sorry" alone does not constitute an apology.

That said, Kyrgios' offense was worse. Fog obviously doesn't literally mean he wants Wimbledon bombed. It's like when your gf is in a mood and threatens to 'kill' you. (If she really does, that's another story.)

Kyrgios on the other hand was clearly intending to humiliate the umpire. Thats not the way to tell the umpire Rafa is playing too slow.
