Do not read if you haven't see the movie, want to watch it and not get spoiled...
When I knew that Goku and Vegeta were about to fight another Saiyan in the latest movie, I didn't think it would be Broly. Broly has been in Dragon Ball since 1993, but was never officially part of canon, and was not created by Akira Toriyama who created the Dragon Ball Manga back in the early 80s. He did however design the character. Broly was such an incredible success with the fans - He was just a Saiyan, he was the Legendary Super Saiyan, very different from the Super Saiyan's that Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks and Gotenks go onto be. He is the only villain who had three Dragon Ball Z movies dedicated to him...
So, when I saw that first trailer and the words BROLY came up onto the screen, I instantly got excited. Akira Toriyama making Broly canon is just insane.
The movie is without a doubt the best Dragon Ball movie ever on so many different levels for me. The art work, detail in the animation, they brought the best of the best for this. And the story itself...
Split in three parts, watching how Freiza took over from his father King Cold, and how they come to planet Vegeta. It was sad watching Goku's parents Bardock and Gine sending Goku off to Earth, just before Frieza blows the planet up. I have seen Bardock's death before, where he fought trying to stop Frieza killing his people, but in this movie it was more deeper, because you see the connection he has with his family and know Goku needs to leave. It was bittersweet because Goku's arrival takes us all the way back to 1984 and the first episode of Dragon Ball...the circle is now complete. Bringing his mother into the story was a nice touch. Vegeta is taken from his father by Frieza and turned into a killer, along with Raditz who is Goku's elder brother....of course Vegeta does not know the truth about his people and the fact Feiza killed his father until the Namek Saga.
Watching Broly's story was very interesting, born with the highest power level of them, Vegeta's father banishes him off to a far off planet. Broly's father Paragus follows him and holds a vendetta against Vegeta's father, training Broly and trying to control him with a necklace. This is where the similarities between the 1993 movie and this movie diverge....in the 1993 non canon version Broly was just a killing machine lacking personality, but that was part of his charm...here you find out that Broly is actual a very nice person, and reluctantly fights only to take revenge for his father.
Once Frieza's army find Broly, Frieza pits him against Goku and Vegeta and we get some of the greatest fights ever seen. Broly v Vegeta kicks it off, we finally see Vegeta in Super Saiyan God form, Broly had never fought anyone before, only animals that were trying to kill him and his father on that desolate planet. So he is out skilled, but he gets stronger and stronger and stronger, the more he fights, the more he adapts, the more he learns, the more powerful he becomes. Vegeta cannot stop him, so Goku steps in...and the stakes are even higher, Goku turns Super Saiyan Blue, and still cannot control Broly's insane power. The fights are just so magnificent, so breathtaking to watch....Vegeta and Goku fight together, and still cannot stop him.
Frieza remembers how Goku turned super saiyan during their fight on Namek when he killed Goku's best friend Krillin...Frieza kills Paragus and tells Broly that Goku and Vegeta killed him....Broly snaps...
Broly is wrecking everyone, his power continues to grow. Goku and Vegeta use instant transmission to find Piccolo to help them fuse. In the meantime, Broly begins to beat up on Frieza, who is simply no match for Broly's power. The heavy punches to the face turn Frieza into a punching bag, even in his golden Frieza form...nothing is touching Broly in his full powered legendary super saiyan form.
Goku and Vegeta fuse to make Gogeta...this made me very happy, Gogeta was never canon before, so bringing him into canon was a very nice touch. When Gogeta arrives, he turns super saiyan blue and begins to savagely dominate Broly, to the point of almost killing him. A few of Broly's new friends understand he is not evil, just controlled and misguided, and using the dragon balls, wish him back to the planet he was found on before Gogeta kills him.
At the end, Goku goes to visit Broly, understanding he is not a bad person and tell him he would like to fight him again....
The movie was just spectacular, the fights and detail that went into this....I simply cannot wait for Dragon Ball Super to continue and see where Broly goes to from here...IMO the greatest Manga of all time and I have read a lot.
