Drakulie - I had a quick question for you and I didn't want to start my own thread but I was unable to send you a PM. I've done some searching and haven't really been able to find the exact answer I'm looking for so I apologize for bothering you directly but I'm hoping you can help me out.

I started reading some threads on here about the Gaucho Spider Silk and I'm interested in trying it out.

I've been stringing for about 6 months and I'm getting ok at stringing and I'm using a Silent Partner dropweight machine.

Is the Spider Silk string natural gut or should it be considered more synthetic?

If it is natural, everything I've read explains in detail about how to be extra careful when stringing natural gut, but on my dropweight machine, the clutch/dropweight almost always kinks the string to a certain extent. I can't help but think this will damage the natural gut string in a bad way but many people say a dropweight is fine as long as you're careful.

Am I doing something wrong when I pull tension on the dropweight?

Much thanks in advance.

The Silent Partner dropweight doesn't hurt natural gut. Sure, it'll bend the string a bit, but I've done plenty of natty string jobs with no problems. I wouldn't call its bend a full kink.

Now with that said, I don't know much about the spider silk string, but I wouldn't worry about the rotational gripper on your machine kinking it.

you'll might get a quicker response from Drak in the stringing/machines section.

i'd also agree that a DW machine should fine for any string available.

I have a a similar drop weight from ATS sports and I've stung gut on it a lot. As GPB said, the rotational gripper definitely bends the string a bit, but it is not a kink. On my machine, I'm able to rotate the gripper a bit in a position where it puts the least amount of pressure on the string. On another note, I would be careful with clamps if this is your first time because they could be too tight and cause deep indents in the gut. Do a little testing on the end of one of the strings to make sure.

I use a Silent Partner Swing in my flat in London and string gut on it all the time. Just be careful and make sure everything is clean (gripper, clamps etc..) and adjusted before you start and you should be fine.
