Draper not being on Centre Court

messiahrobins

G.O.A.T.
Guy is no.4 in the world and current IW champion. Didnt get one match on centre court.

Back in the day Henman, who rarely was as highly ranked as Draper and never won an event as big as IW, was always on centre court and at prime time around 5pm when people were finishing work to maximise BBC viewing ratings. Also the BBC devoted almost 99% of their coverage to Henman as did the print media, Henman was always on the front pages with images of his GF (now wife) in the box cheering him. Ditto Sir Andy Murray, well before he became the ATG he went on to become.

Contrast with the coverage of Draper. Nowhere near the levels Henman and Sir Murray got, either on the BBC or print media and nothing like Radacanu is getting (please Sabalenka do us all a favour tomorrow).

If ever there was evidence of how political and bias the Wimbledon Committee and BBC and UK print media are, this scheduling and coverage of Draper is it. Cannot be too specific but there will be people on here who have ITK information and know what Draper is like privately, a great guy but proper old school in his values, that will not sit well with the Establishment.

Please dont think this is making excuses for his loss today, i am not. He was poor and got schooled by a resurgent Cilic, as Draper himself admitted. Result would have been the same on centre court. However, the point is, why was this not on centre court. It was a blatant snub to him.

What makes it even more surprising is that his dad is part of the establishment as a former LTA Chief exec. Which means Jack is a British tennis establishment nepo baby. It seems they are cannibals!

In a year's time if he goes in with a similar ranking he'll be better known. His views will be the same, the Establishment will be the same, and Draper will be playing on centre court.

Well apparently he didn’t deserve it

I don’t think you’re making excuses, but you’re definitely trying to make this politics thing happen

Draper’s Dad is a bigshot in the LTA, right?

I wonder if the treatment could be bad blood of some kind. Bc yeah, not being on Centre, plus the draw from Hell…

"Didn't get one match." He lost in the 2nd round lmao. You act like he made it to the quarters without playing there.

In Henman's day they were still in desperation mode for a British winner. The fervor of that time isn't going to be replicated less than a decade since Murray won Wimbledon. It's just not the same.

99% of the reasoning behind scheduling and court assignments is money. Maybe 100%. They want the most butts in seats and the most eyeballs on screens. Djokovic is the biggest name in tennis now and was playing a Brit. Of course he got Centre Court.

This is the organization that three years ago banned all Russian and Belarusian players from even entering the tournament. Now Sabalenka gets top billing in their biggest stadium. It’s all about the moolah.

Edit: Forgot Sinner was also on Centre. I’m not British so I don’t know how hyped he is over there. I do know the ATP has been pushing Sinner hard as the face of the sport, along with Alcaraz. No idea what their comparative popularity is over there, though it does seem a bit odd that Sinner vs. some no-name got higher billing than Draper vs. a former finalist. But I still doubt the organizers give a **** what kind of non-public and likely barely even articulable political views some athlete has.

More likely than political vengeance is that on the same day as Sinner and Djokovic are playing a difficult decision had to be made. Do you bump Draper, the current world #1, or the 7 time champion at possibly his last Wimbledon off centre court. Draper is the guy who got bumped as an ordinary scheduling decision encountered at tournaments from time to time.

I was really surprised when the schedule came out, but honestly wasn’t that surprised by the fact that he lost because Cilic has been playing well and even the all broken down version of him is more talented than Draper.

Surely Henman was just as much an "establishment" player as Draper is.

I think a couple of factors to consider on the scheduling choice:

1) The organizers were a bit complacent and presumed Draper would win and thus that they could put him on Centre in the next round. Sinner v Martinez should really be on court 2 or 3 if it has to be played at all, but they will feel comfortable putting it on court 1.
2) There was a Brit on Centre today - Dan Evans. They might well have wanted to have one Brit each on both Centre and court 1.
3) I don't see why they have to put Djokovic on Centre for every match and kind of hope that at some point they don't do so. It's probably now or never, though, and I don't see them putting Sinner v Martinez on Centre rather than Djokovic v Kecmanovic.

Well, at least they can't accuse Wimbledon of being overly biased in favour of British players which is probably what they would be accused of if Draper had played on Centre Court. Given how awful he was maybe it's a good thing that he didn't.

Henman at least regularly got to the semi-finals. He was always the Great British Hope for a Wimbledon title. He mostly lived up to the hype (and BTW he did win the Paris Masters when it was still Bo5 and beat Federer and Roddick, who were then the Wimbledon and US Open champions, en route to the title).

Did only watch part of the Draper match. I think the choice of Nr.1 was quite smart, maybe easing the pressure somewhat and giving him the center court in the next round.

Henman got his first quarter-final aged 22 and progressed to the SF two years later. Given the later growth of Jack and his physical troubles I'm not concerned at all about his progress. For me his biggest problem against Cilic was tactical...

Djokovic always gets centre court in whatever conditions are most comfortable for him 99% of the time... anyone else is sort of at the mercy of that

Vruh, he only played 2 matches.
That's BS

Brit scrubs such as Katie Boulter and Dan Evans were getting center court fixtures.

They clearly had a policy of showcaseing as many locals as possible in the biggest stages, and assumed that since Draper was the best among them, he'd have many more chances than the others to be scheduled on CC.

The OP's contention that Draper is some sort of anti establishment figure is ridiculous. The son of Roger Draper is the biggest istitutional insider player since William Renshaw.

The British media are generally awful to British players, so the less publicity he gets, the better for his long-term development tbh. If anything his connections might be keeping him off centre court in the early rounds on purpose. Although we'll see what happens next year based on the year ahead he has.

Draper already has an MS title, too, though he has only one slam semi-final (and only one slam quarter-final, which he won).

Draper has no Wimbledon pedigree whatsoever; I'd argue Court No. 1 is more than he deserves. And it showed yesterday when he lost to an almost 37 year old Cilic who hadn't played Wimbledon in 3 years

The men's Centre Court assignments were Djokovic vs Evans and Sinner vs Vukic. Former 7-time champ vs a Brit and current no. 1 were always going to be put on Centre ahead of a guy who has never made it past the second round here

PS: Draper's dad is a former CEO of the British LTA, he is the Establishment.

Former is the operative word there.

Henman was getting centre court schedules with way less pedigree than Draper has now as was Murray initially.

Draper has played seven career matches at Wimbledon. Two of them have been on Centre, and four on Court 1

He's played 6/7 matches on the two main show courts. For a guy whose best result at Wimbledon is the second round, how is that not already extremely generous?

Henman and Murray were on centre court more than Draper at the same stage of their careers, Henman was ranked way lower when he was always getting centre court billing back in the 90s.

Draper's first four Wimbledon appearances: 1R, 2R, 2R, 2R
Henman's first four Wimbledon appearances: 1R, 2R, QF, QF
Murray's first four Wimbledon appearances: 3R, 4R, QF, SF

Murray at age 19, in his second Wimbledon appearance, beat two-time finalist and third-seeded Roddick to reach the fourth round.

Draper is now 23, what has he done that justifies putting him on Centre over Sinner and Djokovic?

Draper has just won a Masters 1000. Was Murray no.4 in the world when he was 19?

Rusedski never got the big attention either. Well, nothing like Henman did, even when Rusedski was the British number 1.

Murray waas getting on centre court at 19, was he no.4 when he was 19?
You should know by now that the Wimbledon committee has very little regard for results outside of grass

Also Draper was no Court 1; it's their second show court. It has a roof and lights. It's not like they stuck him on Court 12 or something

My whole point is about the corruption of the Wimbledon Committee. Their treatment of Draper doesnt align with how they were with Henman and Murray before they were world class players.

Maybe they didn’t want the pressure like some have said. That makes sense given that JD struggles with anxiety, breathing, etc
