drop volley, any practice tips?

Drop volley is so effective, especially in doubles, but if you do not have a good touch, the ball could pop up and make it an easy put-away for your opponent. Anybody has any practice tips? I can practice hitting volleys against wall, but don't know if there's any drill to practice drop volley.

if you have a ball machine set it to where it barely comes over the net and do it. or have someone pound balls at you and work on it,

I would start with balls that are higher, so you are hitting them down into the court (no risk of a pop up). When you develop the correct feel for the ball, then you can more to the more difficult low ones.

If you want to work on your touch, spend some time playing around with your racquet, such as tossing the ball around and catching it with the racquet

drop volley is just like catching an egg.. drop your racquet slightly before contact (ie. the racquet is moiving away from the ball) :)

Feel the touch

Yes, 'touch' is the word.
you can practice drop shot against the wall too; draw a 3.5 feet line on the wall...
and, the touch is 'catch' and 'follow-through'--do not 'pounch' the ball..
Of course, eyes-body-knees will go with the touch..
hope you can feel the same touch i did. good luck!

The whole point of a touch shot is to minimize power transfered from the racquet to the ball. To do this, as stated above, just pull your racquet away instantly after contact with the ball.

The pros usually do this with backspin or sidespin too.

The way that i have been taught in drop volleys is that you keep the same motion as a normal volley, but the ball hits in the "going foreward" motion of the volley. it was described as this "volleys are car crashes. there are the ones you win (100% power in shot), the ones that are equal (neutral), and the ones you lose (-% power)"...you absorb the power. He told me to hit balls into the air and catch them w/out it bouncing off of the racquet.
