Dunlop CX200 Tour 18x20 2024

Finally decided to purchase the cx200 tour 18x20 but not sure what to string with. Coming from an Ezone 98 with ptp and ptrev.

Anyone tried a few different setups? Hybrids?

Hybrid
Tour Bite 17 Mains x Favorite Round String 17 Cross @ 47 lbs x 45 lbs eCP with 10% up on tie off strings. Can do down to 18 x 17L if needed. Check SW and make sure it is atleast 325-330 - many dunlops CXs are coming well below spec.

This setup recovers the launch angle, depth, spin - since you are coming from the EZ98 - has great feel and touch, better than the EZ. It will throw up nothing balls like any tight pattern low flex racket especially under pressure - as the CX is not as easy as the EZ but should be serviceable and more enjoyable than the EZ

I play the 2022 CX 200 Tour 18x20 as one of my mains. In 90F plus ambient temps I would string them up with a medium stiff 1.20 poly like max power at 47-50 lbs. I play at the 4.5-5.0 level. It is tough to make a general recommendation without knowing your level and ambient playing temps and your record of string choices and tensions. If I were to play with the 65ra 2024 version I would first try it at 50 lbs. I do recommend at least hybriding with a shaped poly on the mains for extra spin like with ultra cable, hyperG, durafluxx. There are lots of other shaped polys out there I haven't tried yet.

Thanks @AmericanTwist for the response. Should have noted my level of play although slightly difficult to translate to NTRP as I’m based in the UK but have followed calculation guides and it shows a 5.0-5.5 level. I compete in both Kent and North Kent leagues here in the UK and play 6 times a week. Weather is not dependable in the UK, at the moment it’s been between 20-28 degrees C for a few weeks but majority of the year will be cold, 8-15 degrees C. I generally play quite flat, personal preference, and aggressive on court.

With a new racquet, you should start with your old stringjob so that you get a reference comparison with your old racquet. Then you should experiment with gauges and tensions first to see how it performs differently when you change those variables. Only after that should you ditch your current string and try other strings if you want to be systematic about evaluating the performance range of your new racquet against a known reference which is your old racquet and string job.

My club stringer has told me the exact same thing however, has recommended trying Signum pro micronite and Kirschbaum max power as a hybrid if I want to completely change the setup. There was a post not long ago on TT where one member noted the PTR didn’t play well in the cx.

Other players’ experiences won’t be relevant to yours as they are different players with different equipment histories. You have to figure out what you like from your own experience trying out different tensions and strings.

@socallefty Very valid point. Looks like I’ll give my usual setup a go and see what the differences are with the new frame and revert back. Thanks for the opinion

Not sure what type of hybrid (poly/multi or multi/poly) was suggested, but I do not recommend micronite in the mains with poly in the crosses. It stops snapping back quickly, which kind of defeats the purpose of using poly crosses. Other multis are better at sliding.

Damn!! NTRP 5.5 - You are in rarified air indeed. Dont listen to any of us.... ;)

Hey OP I hope you make it to the pros! I am also playing my best tennis and hope to stay at the 5.0 level. I play at a wide variety of temperature ranges from -3C to 36C (basically the cut offs at which I can find no one to play with outdoors lol) so I've experimented with string type and tension.

I used to play syn gut FB exclusively but I've come to appreciate playing with poly, first round now shaped. I used gut/poly for awhile too. I do suggest a shaped poly on the mains and a smooth poly or shaped poly or solid core syn gut with either kevlar wrap or none, on the crosses. The softer string on the crosses will help modulate the aggressive bite on the shaped poly mains. If you do use non-kevlar wrapped syn gut on the crosses, this will give great feel and power (not like nat gut but towards that direction).

I assume you are at least 1.83cm? You should be able to string full bed poly at 50 lbs to start, a few pounds higher if you use syn gut for crosses. As temps decrease drop tension by a few lbs at a time. The CX 200 Tour 18x20 is a such a solid frame and feels really solid on impact. I went with the 2021 (red) version due to its 62ra softness and feel. But I also have a 64ra version (black/red) that I've played with and that provides easier power.

I made a dunlop player's frame thread. Maybe look for it, but I've chronicled my string set-ups and thoughts there to include Kevin Anderson's Revo 2.0 CX Tour.

Thank you @AmericanTwist, this is precisely the response I’ve been looking for and will search for your thread now. Also appreciate your earlier response on this. It Has taken a long time to consider changing frames so this is just the beginning of the journey. I may note down my journey on your thread so others can hopefully obtain answers to questions they may have.
