Dunlop M-Fil 300

Hello, fellow M-Fil club members! I love my recently purchased M-fil 300 racquet with the factory strings! I was just wondering what your string/tension preference is for this racquet. How does it compare to the factory set up? I hit a pretty flat ball most of the time, but do on occasion like to hit a forehand slice. Thank you in advance to all that reply!!

Hi Tim! I also hit quite flat balls. But since I like to swing hard and fast, I need a relatively stiff stringbed to prevent the balls from going too long when I hammer back returns.

To counter this, I'm using a full poly setup. But if you have a low-moderate swing speed, you might want something that offers a little more power suh as a hybrid or even a full syn gut/multi setup.

Therefore, string choice is a matter of personal preference and suited to differing swing styles/speed.

Hope this helps.

Jon

Well the factory strings are a multi so if you like them stick with them or similar. I have 2 m-fils and string the other with 17g syn gut at 55lbs which gives a slightly crisper string bed with a bit more depth control. Best thing to do is to experiment and find what works for you. I think the general view on tension with this frame is that it plays better at the lower end of the tension range and can feel a bit harsh otherwise. Check out Redflea's posts in this thread, he strings up his M-fils pretty low although I'm not sure if he's still using them? Good luck

Two questions: 1: how much should I expect to be shelling out for a couple of new M-fil 300's (each) and 2: HOW THE HECK DO YOU HAVE 207 PAGES OF POSTS?

You Singaporeans and Aussies are a bit out of the way for us Yanks, unfortunately. :)

Now if you could just find me the dried black beans I used to get at a local chinese grocery store...not dried as in rock hard, but dried as in kind of soft and pasty, dry to the touch, but you could easily smush them between your fingers. 6mm or so long, 2 or 3mm thick.

They added a great taste...we used them in a lot of our Chinese cooking until they disappeared from the store when it changed hands, and we haven't seen them since. (We now use black bean paste from a jar.) The new owners look at us blankly when we try to describe those dang beans.... :)

QUOTE]

Not sure exactly what they're called (I'll look it up later), but tell him it's the same kind of bean that's found in the tins of called beans. He SHOULD know what you're talking about... if he doesn't, he ain't CHINESE!

Back on topic (sort of). I hit w/a friends O3 Speedport black last night, and it was pretty darn nice. Big sweet spot, doesn't have the deadened feel the O3 Tour does, though it was dampened enough that even though it felt pretty stiff, it was comfy. Has a lot of power (strung at 57), good control, and swung very light for me in spite of the 327 listed SW (which surprised me when I looked it up today). If any of you have wandering eyes (shame on you!) you might want to take a look at it. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't hate it. :D

Hey - pnoyr3d...Hi yourself. Hope you're doing well w/your new sticks!

I think they are called Tonka beans and are now banned in the US as they are supposed to be Carcinogenic. You can still buy them in the UK though so they can't be that bad for you.

I presume what you're talking about are dried fermented black beans. These are made from soy beans that have been fermented in a cocktail of salt, spices and sauces, and then dried. They are usually just called dried black beans and are sold in 300-400gm plastic bags.

You should be able to find it in any good Chinese goods store. The safest brand to buy is LEE KUM KEE as they have got very high production standards and submit their products to the FDA for approval on a regular basis. I'm very careful about the types of Chinese made products that I buy for cooking and only use certain brands for the traceability of ingredients and good internal housekeeping/corporate governance.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jonolau, Smirker, and Meowmix for the info! Now I don't know whether to be sad or glad that I've been unable to find them... :) I'll take a look for Lee Kum Kee and fermented black beans the next time I'm down at the store...

Had a just an awful weekend match on Saturday after playing great in a couple matches during the week...just could not buy a serve, and was alternately great or awful at the net. Just one of those days, I guess. Hope to redeem myself tomorrow night... :)

My advice is go low...for me the MF300 is best at or below 55 lbs w/gut or multis. I hit pretty flat as well, and haven't found the MF3 to become a rocket launcher at lower tensions, and love the pocketing and feel.

Sorry to hear about the bad outing.

Look on the brighter side, at least you still had an opportunity to pound the court and enjoy the comraderie! :D

hey guys, so i just ordered an m-fil 300 even though I have not hit with it. It was so cheap I didnt think demoing it would be worth it in case i dont like it. From the stats this racquet seems to be pretty evenly balanced. Since im used to playing with a racquet that is 6-8 points head light, i am planning on adding weight to the handle (and at 3/9 oclock for stablility) until the balance has been changed. Do you guys think that I will loose much maneuverability and feel at the net if i make this change?

Thank you!

As a recent convert to the 200 series from the 300, I've noticed that if you keep the balance more headlight as you increase weight, maneuverability doesn't suffer much at the net, now if i were to play a 12oz + at 3 pts HL to even it would probably feel sluggish, obviously. Oh and I am sorry to see OU go down, they would have done well against LSU...

Where did you locate the weights?

So what do you think of this?

I came from the Yonex RDX Mid...8pts head light if I remember correctly, and play the MF300 stock...I started out futzing with lead, but in the end found that it just really didn't need any for me. So give it some time stock at first (allow yourself to adjust) and see how you like it before you throw on the lead. :)

If you do decide you want to add the lead, if you add weight to handle and head, though you can get a more head light feel overall if you add more weight to the handle, it will be less maneuverable overall (require more muscle to move) due to the increased weight - you're moving more mass through the air. I do suggest you go slowly, adding a little at a time to see how it feels, rather than slapping on a bunch all at once.

As far as stability goes, I play a guy who hits servers >100 MPH, and have found the stock M-Fil plenty stable enough to handle that...at 3pts head light, the weight distribution gives you a surprisingly solid hit in a relatively light racquet. :)

Have to agree with Redflea. While the mFil300 is light, it plays very solid. It holds up to pace & spin well in stock form.
I have 3 and only added lead to 2 of them to match them to my heaviest one- not much weight is needed.
I have added the weight in the throat- gives me a more solid feel.
However, if it were not for matching issues, I wouldn't have added any lead

Well now that LSU is out, I can proudly say that my home town team the Missouri Tigers will go the national championships with a win today vs Kansas. The game is being played in Kansas City (where i live) yet i have to work tonight...talk about bad luck, ha

Welcome to the club, feyya!!!

so i played with my stock m-fil 300 today for the first time, only to leave the court very confused. I didnt enjoy the feel of the racquet at all after coming from a pro kennex type c (most comfortable frame on the market imo). It felt very harsh and the sweetspot felt like the size of a dime. It is strung at 58 with poly/multi. I felt very sluggish on the court but earlier today i had done 3000 jump rope skips durring training so my legs were a bit dead. This is what confused me: I played a set against somebody who usually is very compatible with my level yet i won Very convincingly. I can still picture the many times in which I was moving my opponent side to side (he even fell over a few times trying to recover from the sharp angles i hit!).

So the bottom line is the racquet really felt weird (note i dont have any elbow problems so this is a matter of preference) yet my results were superb. For those of you m-fil 300 users, how long did it take you guys to get used to the feel of this frame? Also, is it just me or is it very hard to generate spin with this racquet? Tonight I added 4 grams of lead to 3/9 o'clock and counterbalanced in the handle, so basically i increased weight, swingweight, and stability (most important) without altering balance. Im looking forward to hitting again with the frame and will definitly post my results!

Interesting post, Soonerfan...thanks.

I'll add my (predictable) rant...try a lower tension. Power does not get out of control, and feel improves significantly, IMHO. I'm at 50 w/gut and 53-55 w/multis.

I've found the MF300 very easy to spin up, and I'm not a big spin hitter, so your comment in that area is kind of funny...could just be an early-use issue, as you get comfortable w/the racquet it should become very easy to get plenty of spin.

Your excellent results combined w/not so excellent feel are a quandry, huh? :) The results are probably partly the honeymoon effect that I find as well...I tend to unconsciously pay more attention and concentrate better than usual very early on w/a new toy. It will be interesting to see how things go for you after a few more hits.

I had the same problem with harshness and small sweet spot at first. I put on a leather grip and four grams total at 3 and 9. Also started using a multi string at 55. Followed the advice of knowledgeable M-Fil 300 players, in other words. It's worked very well for me.

Mirrors my experience with this frame. I have had mine 3 months now, playing on average twice a week.
Not finding it particularly comfortable compared to my old HH 6.3 but results are better as I am able to put the ball on a dime. I also added 2g total at 3/9 and 12 which seemed to increase power and give a more solid feel. I might try adding more and see what happens. Stringing it low also helps and you don't seem to lose any control.

Still searching for the perfect racquet that delivers power/accuracy and comfort. LOL.

Transition

Took me a year to change to the MFil3. Now slowly dropping string tension and can't conceive of playing with another racquet. DEFINITELY change to a leather grip.

hey

hey, I'm Christine. I'm thinking of getting an m-fil 300. BUt i have two questions:

1. Is it really good for great topspin, like the babalot?
2. Why do we have to customize the m-fil 300 with lead tape?

just curious before i deicde on it.

1. Yes this racquet is very good for topspin due to its light weight and open string pattern.

2. You dont have to customize the racquet with lead (some dont) but many people (me included) are used to 12+ ounce racquets, so the light weight kind of threw me off at first. Lead is heavy so it makes the racquet heavier.

by the way guys, i finally got over my spin issue with this racquet...its great! I was suffering though with my serve but everyone seems to enjoy serving with this racquet so I guess i need to get used to the even balance.

thanks for the tip. That would get over my topspin issue with my dunlop 600g.

I hope you know that topspin is 90% attributable to technique - ie. being able to brush up on the ball with sufficient force and follow through.

A racquet would only be as good as the technique. Sorry to say this. :(

A Ferrari would only be able to go as fast as the drive being able to control the speed, direction and drift through corners and how hard the accelerator pedal is stepped on. :)

Took me a year to change to the MFil3. Now slowly dropping string tension and can't conceive of playing with another racquet. DEFINITELY change to a leather grip.

Gotta get a leather grip (and a tournagrip). It gives you much better feel.

Well ive had my dunlop mil fil 300 since this last summer and only used it occasionally.the kids i played with sucked.but recently i deceided to go back to it to see how itll to against kids in my lessons i take.its better then my aeropro drive with cortex i feel.i can rip the ball way more and im playing against way better kids.its just spectacular. a sportsauthority is sellin some for 60 dollars only so im goin to go and get 2 more.its ridiculous that i spent 200 for my babolat when i could of gotten for of the mil fil 300.THE MIL FIL 300 rocks

Back to my mfils

Hi Guy's, Been a while....just wanted to chime in and let you know my latest....Having given the AG300 its fair time of play which has been approx. 4 months. I have switched back to my mfil's. All I can say is they are definitely two different sticks. I love my one hand BH with AG300 but I love the forehand better on the mfil...strange right!!! I just found that I could not get confortable with AG300 it felt like it was working against me. I felt the balance of weight going against my forehand stroke and I kept trying to adjust my grip all the time to conform to the racquet's weight of balance....I guess that the best I can explain it. Anywayz I strung up my mfils yesterday with my string of choice which is the Kirshbaum Proline II and Gama Professional and headed to the court. Forehand was better and more comfortable right out the gate. BH took a little while to get used to but found it quickly. I just felt like the racquet was more of an extension of my arm and I wast fighting with my grip. I would like to try the AG300 16x18 if I could find one but for know I am happy to be back.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

December 31

Happy New Year everyone. A special toast to Jonolau and Redflea who have nurtured this club from infancy to greatness. Put a leather grip on, string it at 55, and let 'er rip. Cheers.

Thank you for the kind words, my friend! All the best to you and your family too for the New Year.

To all other MF3 Club members and visitors, here's a toast to a much better new year ahead in 2008, with best wishes for happiness, health and prosperity!

Hey guys, i put 12g of lead on my AG300, at 3 and 9. Will it make a big difference, and how will it play compared to the stock version.

I have not tried that much weight at 3 & 9. But I can imagine that it will give you lots of plough-through effect on groundies, and ther'll be better stability on volleys.

But not sure if volleys may also be a little unpedictable and perhaps the racquet head might twist a little more.

Report back your findings!

I hope it gives me a bit more power. Ill play tomorrow and report it. Also, i might not be able to review the strings straight away because i do not break strings very often. But i will eventually review them.

Thanks... :)

And a happy new year to all. I played four hours of doubles yesterday, an hour w/my wife today. That's what I call a great end to last year, an a great start to the new year!

Here's to more tennis, more tennis buddies, and more fun! :D

I hope you know that topspin is 90% attributable to technique - ie. being able to brush up on the ball with sufficient force and follow through.

A racquet would only be as good as the technique. Sorry to say this.
I know you said 90%, but just want to state the obvious that technique being equal, equipment can make a significant difference in spin generation. 300g has reputation for easy access to spin because of it's relatively open string pattern. Same technique with 200g will generate less spin.
