earned points are different in WTA and ATP?

Today I watched a girl from my country-Tsvetana Pironkova (already in the fourth round yeeeeee) and it was interesting how many points she would win, I thought that are 180 such like in men tour, but in Bulgarian site I read that it was actually 280points that she won!! I checked the site on the WTA and I saw that the point system is different for women!They earn for title-2000,for final-1400,for1/2-900,for1/4-500,for 4th round-280,for 3th round-160 etc,etc and in ATP the points are for title-2000,for final-1200,for1/2-720,for1/4-360,for 4th round-180.for 3th round-90 etc,etc...
Does anyone have any idea why its so?? Until now I thought the points for men and women are equal! Thanks ...

Earned points are not exactly the same. WTA and ATP are different associations.

Imagine what a huge advance Serena would have with the men´s point system..

The points systems for the ATP and WTA are entirely separate. The number of required tournaments is different, the way tournaments are split up is different, etc. They're run by different entities.
