A couple of things.

Firstly, yes, Rafa stopped Novak a lot from making stupid numbers on clay.

But more importantly, if you remove Rafa, then you don't get the same Novak. The Novak you see is a product of his battles with the big 4 and on clay especially with Rafa. He might not have even been as good as he eventually turned out to be, something Djokovic himself has said many times.
