Easter Bowl Wildcard

BSPE84

Semi-Pro
Just noticed something interesting on the wildcard list for Easter Bowl. It appears that the powers that be at the USTA awarded a spot in B14 to a 12 year old Carson kid who is still nine months away from aging in. The kid is a real nice player, but I think his own parents would agree he would be hard-pressed to win a 12's National right now. Hard to understand (but then not really) why the USTA would allow this considering that they've already squeezed out a ton of good players in their proper age group with the reduced size format... Just frigging amazing .

That's crazy. But, it goes along with the old phrase "It's not what you, but who you know."

well its only a few spots, of course the uUSTA kids are gonna get some breaks.
My point is, the USTA kids are getting thousands of dollars worth of free gifts, why don't they structure the tournament system so that all of the kids get the same chance, and let them earn enough money to pay for everything.

USTA should subsidize/waive fees for a % of US kids on the various list. Let's face it USTA is a Business that enables others to make lots of $$$$$. It feeds on you believing your kid is the one, kinda like NCAA football. It picks some to keep hope alive and jumps on others that are already over the hump.

Why have fees anyway? Aren't the tourneys designed for the cream to rise to to top? Ok I'll pay $200 for membership with no tourney fees? How about that?

particularly odd decision given that the kid in question lost in the 2nd round of clay court supers last year,1st round of hard courts and 1st round of winter supernationals all in the boys 12's - and the USTA is supposedly making this big deal about playing your age group - truly bizarre!

It is actually very easy to understand their decision. As a matter of fact it is about the only way to move from one age group to another. If they can give him a wild card and he can somehow manage a win, opponent withdrawal or injury, the kid can get 120 points. How else is he going to qualify for national tournaments after he ages up? He certainly cannot get enough points playing SoCal designateds, just give that up now. If they don’t do this they end up with at “HiPo” player that does not qualify for national play, kind of hard to explain.

It's nice when you run the system.

JM, I'm not so sure. I think he would be better off boning up his 12's ranking for a few more months and then use that to qualify for 14's late in the summer or fall. Remember, he is still practically a year away from aging up. Would certainly get a lot more matches in theory if he did that.

And if that doesn't work, they can always give him another wildcard next year .

Yes. And you may have also noticed that there's a kid ranked basically top 10 National in 12's 25 spots higher than him but buried about 25 deep on the alternates list.

Basically, under the new system ( if you are not backed by the USTA), you have to play up at an earlier age.

But, then again, you can't get in because the draw is limited.

It would be funny if my kid didn't play tennis.

Maybe, someone should start another organization.

Like another political party, and we can pay the dues to that party.

The USTA wildcards their kids into the ITF tournaments, too. All of the smaller ITF tournaments in FL are all USTA kids playing one another. It's not hard to move up the system when you are controlling it.

I believe that a player should only be able to receive 1 wildcard a year into a tournament. If you are good enough, then you should get all the points you need from that one tournament.

I have fought with them for years. I can tell you, it doesn't do any good. Nobody listens because it would mean they would have to admit they were wrong at times.

I wrote them years ago that they could have 8 wildcard tournaments around the country for wildcards into the Supers. Of course they thought that was a stupid idea.

The answer has and will always lie in quali's and wild card tourney's. Many, many pro circuit events even have w/c and all have quali events. The US junior system is the only system which does not offer quali or w/c events leading up to the main event

From the website, here are the wild cards...

Most seem fair... but, a few seem like they just play for the USTA centers and got a wild card.
