Good work.
I do not understand the meaning of some terms:
- DFs
- FH wing UEs
- FH wing FEs

Thanks:)

Good work.

- FH wing FEs

Thanks:)

DFs = double faults
FH wing UEs means Unforced errors of the forehand wing -from forehand groundstrokes, volleys and overheads.
FH wing FEs means errors forced from the forehand wing -from forehand groundstrokes, volleys and overheads.

Cash returned from injury and made a memorable AO by beating Noah and Lendl.
He also played Edberg v.

The serve of the two is below average, they beat better than that.

For the rest, good numbers.

I do not think it's a coincidence that Cash's only aces were made in the two sets won.

Quite. Also, 12 DF's for Cash, vs. 3 for Edberg, is shocking. His poor performance on the serve is possibly the single biggest reason in his defeat.

Comments :

Edberg was flawless in the first 2 sets, hardly lost any points on serve. Serve % went down in the 3rd set to 40% and he was broken twice in that set. In the 4th set, serve was nowhere near incisive as it was earlier and he was broken thrice in that set (less pace, was placing it in the hitting zones for Cash). But he finally composed himself in the 5th set and took it.

Cash was volleying fine in the 1st 2 sets, but not returning/passing that well. There was a long game in the 2nd set (28 points), at 3-5, which was a wakeup call for Cash. He started playing better from then on. In particular, the returning and passing. But serving wasn't that great.

1st set : At 3-4, Cash serving, 1/5 first serves in from Cash and he gets broken by Edberg with some pretty good returns. Otherwise both of them held with ease in this set.

2nd set : Edberg breaks Cash with a fantastic return game at 1 all. The only chance Cash has on Edberg's serve in this set is at 4-3, Edberg serving. Edberg goes down 0-30, but wins 4 consecutive points to take the game. The game at 3-5, Cash serving was a very long one, with 5 BPs for Edberg and many deuces. Cash saved some of the BPs, Edberg was slightly negligent on a couple of those points. Finally Cash held. Then Edberg held in the next game to take the set. In the first 2 sets, Cash had got only 9 points off Edberg's serve.

3rd set : first game, Cash faced 3 BPs, but saved them all. If Edberg had broken then, it'd have been all over for Cash IMO. But then Cash broke in the next game.
Cash was broken back at 3-1, with 3 DFs in one game. However Edberg didn't capitalise on the lucky break. At 2-3, he got in just 1/5 first serves and was broken again. Then Cash held 2 more times and took the set.

4th set : Cash started off with an inspired return game and broke Edberg at 15. He broke again and was up 5-1. But Cash got broken back twice to make it 5 all. - including the game at 5-4, when he made 3 DFs . Then Edberg played a poor game to get broken at love. Cash then finally served out the set successfully to take it 7-5.
Set was a breakfest with both serving poorly , but returning and passing well enough. 3rd and 4th sets had some sloppy volleying from Edberg, 4th had some from Cash.

5th set : Edberg finally composed himself. Started serving better. Broke Cash once in that set, with Cash serving at 2-3. Edberg was up 40-30 in the next game, but committed 2 silly errors to get himself down BP, but managed to pull himself out of trouble with some good play. Cash was serving to stay in the match at 2-5, faced 3 MPs, but saved them all. Then Edberg served it out in the next game.

Watching the match, felt that Edberg's game when clicking was just better. Clearly better serve and better returner/passer.
Cash did volley well of course and had his moments of brilliance with returning/passing, but serve was not that solid.
Cash raising his level, fighting and Edberg's level dipping considerably converted what could've been a straight-forward win for Edberg into a dramatic 5-setter.
This was of course the last final to be played at Kooyong and the Aussie crowd wanted Cash to win, obviously. But Edberg got his fair share of support as well.

@abmk
Do you have serve %'s by set or points won on 1st serve, 2nd serve etc?

cash beat Edberg on the same court in Davis cup a month before this match - 13-11, 13-11, 6-4. Wish I could've seen it.

Tough break for Cash to beat Lendl in consecutive AO semis only to lose in five in the final on both occasions. And he had a pretty good record against Wilander, as well. Cash was up 4-2 going into the 88 AO final and was 4-0 in majors, although three of the four wins were at Wimbledon, and so on a surface that favored Cash, whereas rebound ace did not favor him and may have favored Wilander.
