It's an early spring day in the Netherlands, it's warm and the bullsheet Russian Canadian predictably melts down.

GSM Stan Wawrinka. Decent match all things considered IMO. Was mostly impressed with Shapovalov towards the end of the 2nd set. Probably the first match I've seen of his where he really looked like he was trying to keep the ball in play instead of whaling away on everything.

Stan just a bit better in the end.

I don't know what match you watched. Shapovalov was average until 4-3, then he was absolutely disastrous and when the ship had already sunk and he started playing somewhat acceptable Wawrinka started playing bad and he let him in the match. Then, when the chance came to push it to a third he melted all over again.

There's not a single positive note for Shapovalov in this match.

Poster A - What a comeback by Shapo
Poster B - What a disaster this Shapo

I mean, it kinda was both? He was down two breaks in the second after playing like crap, then played some great points to get back on serve, then kinda froze in the tiebreak.

Stan didn't play amazing, but made some big shots on some big occasions. That passing shot on the run to break in the first was pretty classic.

Just for continuity:
Poster C - Fedr

Totally disagree with you. This is just a knee jerk reaction with not an ounce of reality.

Seemed like a typical Shapo match, some promising moments, inconsistent, too many double faults. Sounds kinda like Dimitrov.

He may well improve beyond that in future but he did not do so today.

He was up and down like any 19 year old not named Nadal in the last 15 years. He wasn't great, but there are definite positives. A bit of bad shot selection at 4-4 30-30 in the first set did him in and he let it carry over into the second set, but he got better towards the end. He just didn't win the second set because Wawrinka was a touch more solid. I've seen better matches from him, but I won't predict his ultimate career demise just because he lost to Wawrinka in Rotterdam.

For some reason some posters on these boards have absolutely nothing positive to say about any players, not even the younger players. Their posts tend to be very repetitive and therefore unoriginal as well as terribly boring. It's really because they have nothing to say but too much time in which to say it. Fortunately it is easy to avoid their posts.

I have plenty of positive things to say about players

When they're there to be found.

Don't ask me to watch a young player play a bad match, lose due to his own mistakes and pretend like it was a sign of improvement.

When every young player who gets half decent results is hyped to the high heavens, a little dose of realism may seem very negative in contrast

Well I'm not a great believer in the next gen or anything, but I do believe too many people lack patience. I told people after he beat Nadal that he probably wouldn't peak for another 5-6 years at the earliest, but nobody wants to wait that long because we're desperate for a new star. He just lost in 2 close sets to a Wawrinka that played pretty well. It's not the end of the world. His career will go on and he'll win and lose more matches.

I missed that match and I'm no further ahead with insight from this thread.

I'm guessing Stan played reasonably well, but not stunning, and that Denis played as Denis often does....inconsistent.

Did I miss something?

No.

Spot on x100.

Well I do try sometimes, but seriously if he hasn't improved by the time he's around 25-26 compared to what he is now (i.e Thiem, Dimitrov, Raonic, Nishikori for example who we all bash here endlessly) then the bashing will be likely justified barring a later career surge. He'll fit in with the rest of them, but right now I'll preach patience.

People are over analyzing every one of his losses to see if he does something different since the last time he lost which was at most a week or two ago. 95% of the time that takes a young player YEARS unless you're a budding ATG.

Some talk recently about how Medvedev is the best of the young gen or the most promising and things like that (I only glanced so maybe I'm overselling it). But to me it shows that the Next Gen are being bundled together too loosely. He's 23 (just turned).

Looking forward to seeing Shapovalov at 23. Looking forward to seeing a bunch of "Next Gen" at 23.

I'll come back in 2022 then.

All true but there was some fireworks. Denis was down 2 breaks in the second set and then broke back twice upping his level but couldn't consolidate during the tie break. It's not same old same old with Shapo, he's showing some general improvements, there was takeaway from that match.

Denis was a tad inconsistent with his serve again. But, overall he showed some good moves, and great patience in the second set. He changed up tactics, served better, went for more percentage shots, and generally played a higher level of tennis. He could have played the TB better, but Stan was pressing very hard, and making those shots. Did the same against Nishikori today.
