Elbow Pain after using Poly

Hi All,

I am using the Gosen Polylon + Gosen OGSM / Forten Sweet 16 combination for the past few months and now i am getting elbow pain. While playing i don't feel any pain.

I think it's still in early stages. When i stretch my arm outwards i fell slight pain at the elbow. And when i try to lift just using my fingers i feel more pain at my elbow.

I play almost every day (2 hours per day/ mostly doubles).

I never had elbow pain before i started using Poly. I used Prince Syn Gut and other syn guts before.

I am panning to stop using poly before my elbow pain gets worse.

I haven't used many multi's . I tried Gamma Multi's and i lost my consistency.

I am planning to go back to Syn Gut (mostly Gosen OGSM).

Appreciate any other String recommendations. (other than poly/kevlar)

Thanks

I use Gosen Polylon 16 / OG-17 on Yonex RDS 001 Mid. In the beginning (2 years ago?), I experienced severe elbow pain. Then I switch racquet to something else (can't remember as I have quite a few, :-). The pain was gone soon after.

I pick up Yonex RDS 001 mid again. Right now I set the tension low, really low: 43 main / 41 cross. And I do not hold the handle too tight. The pain hasn't returned.

If you can experiment different tensions, give them a try. Relax the grip somewhat might help too.

I recommend you start off by reading the first 2 post of this thread http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=184942 and the forst post of this thread http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=352048. Both are excellent resources for beginning your transition from a poly set-up to a multifillament set-up.

Best of luck to ya.

I agree. If you're going to stop using poly (a good idea if you have elbow problems), your best bet is probably a multifilament. I've used monofilament synguts before too, but I found that the best multifilaments are better overall strings. Read those threads and you'll be set.

Polylon is one of the stiffest polys I have ever used. I'd recommend switching to a soft string like Forten Sweet or a multi until that elbow pain is totally gone. If you want to have another go at poly there are much better choices out there and a lot softer. I'm sure you can get a lot of recommendations for a soft poly on this forum. Pro Line 2 is incredibly soft for a poly, Tourna BHB7 has a lot of give too.

If you can afford to pay the premium for multifilaments then worth it to go that route. But it is much more expensive than synthetic guts strings like gosen. I personally like tecnifibre multifilaments. I used to use NXT but overall think tecnifibre multifilaments are the best

OP, the bolded part is a wishful thinking.

Yes, it is a beginning stage in term of pain but if you already feel pain when clawing an object with your fingers, then your TE has been building up for months and the pain you are recently experiencing is only a tip of the iceberg.

The pain will get worse and worse, and I strongly recommend that you stop playing altogether rather than look for another type of string to continue to play with.

Take a few weeks or a few months off, icing your elbow religiously, until you are free of pain, and then do rehab exercises. Then you will be ready to return to tennis with multis or natural gut.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I applied ice for few minutes and i didn't feel any pain after that !! It really helped.

Any way scheduled an appointment with an Orthopedic.

Not playing tennis till then will be the hardest thing..

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Polyfibre TCS is very soft poly but you have to restring often as it looses tension fast, I get like 6 hours when using it. I am testing strings right now, will try LTEC 5S Black full bed next and maybe Pro Line 11. Also, if you want a safe and nice setup Ive heard that Pacific Classci Gut mains/ MSV Cofocus cross is great, I might try it in the future as well

Hi All,

I visited an orthopedic surgeon and after all the x-rays to my elbow and knees and calf he told me that i don't have any Tennis Elbow or any fractures.

I have a runner's knee ( i am felling pain when i take the stairs). Not sure why i got it.

I am glad i don't have tennis elbow. :-)

I never play polys over 52 or so.. and I never play a full bed.. Gosen Polylon is one of the worst strings for arm safety. Old style 1st gen poly..stiff.. stiff stiff. Plays ok in the mid 40s.

I have 2 year with chronic elbow pain. My regular raquet was head gravity tour and is great with gut/poly at low 45/47. But is not a very spin control, more flat with 18*20. I try clash pro and I loved it but never could did a flat shots well, with spin is great and very arm friendly, even with full poly. Then I try prince phantom 100x 305. I lover too but you have to put all power in every shot and It stress my shoulder first time. Very anemic power.
Then I try ProKennex black ace 300. I put 3gr at 10 and 2. Wuawww it is the perfect raquet with cream and gut. Try it, if you have arm problems or even not. I’m very very happy. Great control, great power, low weight 324, 22 bean, with 3 extra grams is very power but controles, all insinde. The spin is amaizing /all tell me, your shots take floor and take much more speed/ And great in flat shots. NO PAIN.
I finish my 2 years raquet search. Thanks prokennex! I want to share this. ProKennex don’t sell in my country so I hade to import and a lot off players should has this cuestión. This is the best raquet don’t think it and buy it. It work perfect. Just low tension 3gr at 10 and 2, and is very power. And the best for elbow.

I hardly break the strings. I strung my racquets may be couple of months back and (poly Mains and Syn Gut Crosses) and i am still using them.
The problem is not the poly or the racquet. The problem is that you are playing with ‘dead’ poly where it has almost all its resiliency and transmitting more vibrations to your arm. Most polys go dead within 10-15 hours (shorter for stiffer polys) and have to be cut out by players who don’t break poly sooner. That’s why it is better suited for advanced players who will break it fast. If you don’t break poly fast, then cut it out after 10-15 hours when you likely start feeling the first signs of arm/wrist/elbow tightness or soreness. If you keep playing with it, you will get injured - that’s just how poly works. Poly should come with a warning sticker to cut out within 15 hours.

If you play poly in a hybrid, it feels OK for a few more hours, but not cutting it out after 20 hours is asking for arm trouble.
