Electric Guitar question for the Experts

Oh another dumb question......... do I play electric guitars with a pick...... and can I use the same pick as I did for an acoustic guitar?

you can use any pick with any guitars, it's all personal preference which one you want to use... although i think thicker picks are more suitable to playing where you have to pick one string at a time (playing lead) or if you want to hit your chords and riffs harder (especially in playing palm muted stuff), and thinner picks gluide through multiple strings easier which makes it preferrable in strumming chords... but like i said, it's all personal preference...

I think that your top priority should be getting lessons--much more than which ax you start with. Seriously, as the other guys are saying a Squier or an Epiphone can both play and sound really good, especially for the money.

I'm guessing that you don't play any other instruments? Get lessons! Don't try to learn strictly from the internet. Having a routine lesson will force you to practice, both to justify the price of lessons & to avoid the embarrassment of showing up to your lesson without having practiced what your instructor has taught you. You really only need a half an hour lesson once a week.

I've had so many friends buy guitars and never actually learn to play them. The only friend that has actually stuck with it is the one who took lessons. I actually went with him to help him pick out a guitar, amp, tuner, etc. & he left it all in a corner of his room for about a year. He's been my roommate for a couple of years now and I think that hearing me play all the time became enough of a reminder of the fact that he never put his purchase to use for him to finally break down and get lessons. Now he plays more than I do.

Another thing to keep in mind is that guitar players tend to have several guitars, both acoustic and electric. It's not like buying a cheap guitar now bars you from buying a more expensive one down the line. It's good to have at least one cheap guitar. Guitars aren't comparable to tennis racquets--if you buy one of the cheaper models of guitars that people here are recommending, it won't limit your ability to learn, nor will it make you sound much worse.

I learned myself......never took a lesson. My idol in the guitar world is Joe Perry, of aerosmith. When I learned he learned completely on his own, I was determined to as well. I just had a few more (online) resources.

Hey Shwetty - have you thought about going to some "anger mgt' classes ? you need help sonny...

Why do you keep calling me sonny. I'm not your damn son, and if you have any kids I'd feel really bad for them having to have a Mr. Know-it-all dad who sits on his ass all day calling people "sonny" on a tennis forum. I'll make you a deal: I'll take anger mngmt classes if you take "stop being such a dick" classes.

Because you're acting like someone's stupid, spoiled and nasty little brat (of around 10 years of age, I'd say...). It's too obvious to have to explain to anyone ELSE. People will often talk to you in a condescending manner if you act like a little jerk-off. Better get used to it...sonny.

He isn't a "dick". But even good guys only have so much tolerance for nasty little morons. You go and take those classes...he doesn't need to stop being anything.

Ditto - I'd also add that a good happy medium is a med tortex(yellow) or green ( med stiff) pick that will do the job for both lead and rhythm.

I think they're both sexy (except the Jackson is for pu$$ies 'cause it's owned by Fender)

http://www.jacksonguitars.com/artists/

If they are for pussies then why are there so many excellent musicians playing them?

Enthroned, Ensiferum, Gojiria, Grave, Helstar, Kreator, Hirax, Norther, Trans Siberian Orchestra, are some of the bands with excellent guitarists on the list. There are also many other bands using them that aren't listed there. Yeah you may not know any of these bands but they are all very high profile bands in their respective genres and highly regarded. Every single one of these musicians would kill you in a guitar duel so be careful who you criticize.

There you go ' Sweaty ' - couldn't of said it better myself - something tells me you're the 300lb guy who sits on his duff, can barely play the ' Outer Limits' theme song on his imaginative ' Gibson' & feels the need to resort to name calling (profanity) due to his own incompetency:confused:

Hey guys.....

I picked out a guitar and amp........but what are these "cords" that I need to buy???

Probably a stupid question....... and do I need anything else to get started?

Do you have cable ( Comcast) TV ? - they have a free ' On demand" music section that has beg. guitar lessons which is pretty decent IMHO + they have quite a few songs they teach you - really not too bad.

I don't recall asking your opinions Dr. Phil. Stick your head back up your as$ where you like it. My trash talking is always entertaining because shmucks like you and the other fat guy are always on edge waiting to take offense at every little poke to your sizable love handles. Spare me the ******** "grow up" comebacks.

God, you're like a trout, you just keep bitin' and bitin'. And, rest assured, I'm plenty competent at all styles of guitar!

Do ya mean cords...like what connects the guitar to the amp or c(h)ords like what's that second chord that Angus Young plays in Highway To Hell?

You might want to check out this cheapo Multi Effects pedal:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/DigiTech-RP50-Guitar-Multi-Effects-Pedal-102135435-i1124374.gc

Click on Recto Delay and Fuzzboy...you might like it. You'll need two cords to plug in and out of this bad boy...but it's instant distortion. You can drop another hundred bucks on a pedal that will give you a little variety...just in case you get bored. Go nutz.8-)
