Ellesse: an adventurous mix of Tennis and Italian design

Legend
I first started watching tennis in the mid 70s as a child. I was lucky enough to watch Borg in all of his glory and cool. What stuck out about Borg at that time besides his haircut, was his sense of style.. Fila at that time was the equivalent in coolness, with D&G of today.. And Borg, with his sense of cool, and the genuine sleek styling of Fila, propelled a larger than life, James Dean esque vision of how cool tennis can look.. That was the pinnacle of tennis.. Since then we have some super stars that bring their own flavor to their lines of clothing that they sponsor, but certainly not the larger than life, sport transcending cool of the late seventies and early eighties propelled by the Ice Man.. Bjorn.
So every now and then i reminisce about that by gone era, and i look around at the various tennis brands of today.. The biggest of the bunch is Nike. . They have done a great job.. They dont exude that third dimension of cool, but they sponsor the biggest names, and they make good fitting, modern gear.. Then you have Adidas, who are doing very much the same thing.. They may be earning cool points in the soccer world, but they are pretty middle of the road in tennis.. Then you have a brand like Lacoste, in which is simply outrageously priced, with very little of the cool factor of old. These guys overcharge for everything and offer a very blah product at the end of it.... But now moving on to the reason for this thread.. I remember in the early 80s, that the only other company that was a rival to Fila in its hey day, was Ellesse.. So being that they have revamped their line, i for the first time yesterday, checked out their site.. And i am very pleased with what i have seen.. These guys are marching to the beat of their own drum.. You can see at a glance the patterns and styling of old, but met with the modern touch of Italian tailoring. . With one glance i had fallen in love with an brand that brings the word cool to the table. If Ellesse can sponsor a top player in the next few years with thing sleek styling and ingenuity, they will help bring about the tennis revolution of old which was spurred both by man.. Bjorn.. and clothing.. So congratulations to Ellesse for bringing something truly cool to the table..

There are no plans to release the line though. So it's not really worth getting hyped up to just view Lopez on a webpage

Really good to see them making a comeback. I love ellesse and I love even more Sergio Tacchini. It would be a great shame if these true heritage tennis brands will fade out of the market. Personally, I find the modern tennis outfit to be too much on the tech side while lacking good style. Feliciano's navy polo is gorgeous, unfortunately I can't seem to find it available for purchase. And how come ellesse is a Japanese brand now?

I live in Europe and tons of Ellesse stuff sits on the clearance rack at TK Maxx. Same with Sergio Tacchinni clothes. I like Ellesse but they have zero cool factor over here. You would look kind of cheap if you tried to rock Ellesse on court.

Tennis clothing or cotton t shirts?

Well that is a shame. They should keep yo higher standard of old

I will senond that, although I cannot find tennis clothes. But plenty of bargain basement t-shirts.

They are not regarded in high regard, which is a shame.

Back in the 80's the coolest tennis clothing and most expensive was Ellesse, Fila, and Sergio Tacchini. Its a shame how down market they have gone.

well Fila i can understand.. they were the biggest sellouts during the 90's. when tennis lost some steam they went in a very tacky direction.. and went basketballlish.. it didnt work
but Ellesse and ST.. yes its like we live in bizarro world.. where the opposites of what should happen happen.

I also think it's a matter of licensing. HEAD for example, they licensed their name for footwear and whoever got it went straight for the money by producing cheap and inferior shoes. Babolat on the other hand, kept their footwear business in-house an came onto the market the right way: with a good product at the right price. Now, HEAD looks like a joke compared to Babolat when it comes to shoes. Maybe something similar happened to ST and ellese.

Lacoste is the premium brand these days. I just buy the plainest Adidas stuff I can find. The 3 stripes age well whatever the trend is.

It doesn't matter how great Ellesse is when their distribution is so pathetic.
That's very true. Unfortunately, whoever owns the name nowadays doesn't have the means and/or desire to get a proper distribution channel. Same situation for ST, I am afraid.

Head made tennis shoes way back in the 80's when Babolat was known only for their strings.

Head did shoes in house in the late 70's, 80's and most of the 90's. They licensed out the shoes in the 2000's. The HEAD shoes now are designed in house again.

The current Head shoes are good quality. I think it was the same situation before in the 70's and in the 80's.

That's some pretty cool stuff. The other guy's grass is always greener. I remember being young and in France in the early 80s. Ellesse, Fila, Adidas, etc., were crap.

My brother and I were considered the coolest of cool because we had genuine Levi's, Fruit of the Loom t shirts, and Converse low cut canvas sneaks (Chuck Taylors)

We wore cotton gym shorts with our college logo to play in (no pockets, of course)

just goes to show...

The apparel Feliciano was wearing at this year's Hopman Cup looked amazing. Is TW carrying any ellesse gear these days?
His Hopman Cup range was quite nice - it had subtle features. Will be interesting to see how good his range is during the year.

Love the shirt in your first photo. Where can it be found?
The UK company who owns Ellesse said about a year ago the grand slam kits would be available online in the future. They did actually have some of the first range Lopez and Haas wore on the UK site about a year ago but in limited numbers. Since then nothing. They have posted a few times since on twitter they would be available... they just don't seem to urgent about it. Lopez is more of an ambassador for the brand rather than to market a specific model shirt. They do show up from time to time on the big auction site but aren't cheap.

Items actually belonging to Lopez or just the same styles that he wore? Sorry you didn't get them
Not belonging to Lopez, just the same as. I already have the one that's still there - I missed the other style (the one he wore at the French Open doubles).
