Emergency call during match

We won 6:2 1st set and lost 3:6 the 2nd set. Just played one point in the 3rd set, my partner got a phone call from wife the kid had nose bleeding and wanted him to come home right away to send the kid to the hospital. My partner told wife we were going to finish the match soon and we continued to play. We lost 1:6 quickly.

I feel we shouldn't continue and should retire instead. I appreciate partner committed to the match but we can't win without focusing on the game and we will be sorry if anything goes wrong with the kid due to the delay.

He probably had an idea from the call and tone of his wife as to how serious it was and he acted accordingly. I would trust him to be able to gauge the seriousness and balance it against finishing the match.

Unless he is a complete tennis nut and would continue with a game even if hsi house was burning down....

In our league, cell phones must be turned off. If a cell phone vibrates or rings during the match, it is automatic loss of point. So this wouldn't have happened in our league.

My own family knows they can't reach me during a match, so they don't even try. I tend to get a lot of calls as soon as the 2-hour block of time is over, though.

The wife called our captain and the captain relayed the message. My partner called his wife back on the site.

I think the wife should call ambulance for help in case the captain was in play as well.

Granted, I turn my phone off during matches too. But if my wife called or showed up at the court stating there was an emergency with my child, I'm defaulting - Sorry captain. I put my family #2 in my life behind only God. Everything else is a distant third.

Believe me. Some cell phones are quite aggressive in the way they vibrate and if it happens to be sitting up against something rigid, that can amplify the sound.

Nose bleeds are seldom serious. When I was a kid I got them frequently and some were very long and a bit fret-full but I survived them all. Today, they would have probably cauterized the damn vein and stopped the nuisance. In the old days, barbers used to bleed you.

The way the match scores were trending, you would have probably lost, no matter what. Your partner probably knows his wife, and that she's prone to hysteria.

Now, if the kid had been in a head-on car accident--and, his nose was bleeding that's a different story.

If the kid got a nose bleed from doing a face plant while skate-boarding down a stair-rail, I'd just let him bleed--Darwinism in action.

Just my $2.02 adjusted for inflation.

If my husband called me on the court because one of our kids had a nosebleed, I would be a bit annoyed. I mean, come on. Everyone knows how to treat a nosebleed. All you need is a tourniquet.

perhaps, unless the nodebleed was caused by getting hit in the face with a baseball or something extreme.

my brother lost a flyball in the sun when he was 8 or 9 & took one right on the nose. several surgeries later he was OK. if mom or dad were playing a tennis match, i know they would have quit the match to get to the hospital...as your initial post indicated was being debated.

If the cause of the nosebleed is serious like being in an MVA or trauma to the face, the wife should not call and wait for the husband to come home. She should seek immediate attention for her kid. If there is an uncontrolled nosebleed not from trauma that has been going on despite attempts to control it, again waiting for the husband to come home and go to the hospital is too long. Basically the wife sounded she didn't know what to do (or perhaps was annoyed her husband was gone for a tennis match so long and wanted a way to get him home sooner  )

A nose-bleed????....whoa, that's about as hardcore-serious as a paper-cut on a finger.

There's no such thing as an "emergency" when playing tennis, because there's nothing more important than tennis. Nothing. You can get a new/different wife and have more kids, but you can't ever erase a default-loss in a match.

Women really appreciate these insightful/inciteful snippets...

My husband called me last night during our post-match hoisting of the wine to request that I drop everything and go to the drug store for cortisone cream. My son had a bug bite. It was itchy.

This doesn't even make sense. You are actually taking issue with the decision your partner made about his family. Fine. You are free to do so. It's a judgment call, and his call to make. It's certainly not worth posting here, now is it? Nor is it a tennis related issue.

However, the real reason you posted this, is that you are bitter about losing the match. Well, the REAL alternative you suggest was defaulting, so you lose anyways.

If you think it through, you'll realize that the only option open to him, which leaves you possibly capable of winning, was not to take any calls from his wife, and to instruct the captain to do the same. Now is that what you want? Gee, you seem to think his family should be the priority.

It's too bad that you got distracted and lost your match. These things happen. Defaulting wouldn't have changed that outcome. At worst, he spent an additional fifteen minutes losing 5 games "quickly". You really think that parenting offense is worth posting here about?

I'm happy to have found the spokesperson for all women. I'm sorry to hear your husband also suffers from hysteria, maybe you could find a Freudian trained psychiatrist for him. Hope your son is less itchy. Was it Merlot or Chardonay?

It was a bad Merlot, and my son somehow survived.

What would you do, in the same situation, if it happened before cell phones were available?

If your phone is off, then emergencies don't happen. That's how it works. Simple cause and effect. :)

Seriously, if I were playing a match and my husband needed to reach my captain, he couldn't do it if a million dollars were riding on it. I do tell him which facility I'm going to, so he could reach me in a massive emergency by calling the front desk. It had better be something more interesting than a nose bleed.

I did have one emergency that happened while I was playing a match. When I play, I leave my son (then 12) at home alone. The amount of time he spends alone varies -- his dad tries to time his arrival to coincide with my departure, or one of his older sisters might breeze through.

Anyway, on this night I decided to order a pizza delivery for him. I ordered two large pizzas so everyone could eat when they showed up. The delivery guy was late, so I greeted him the driveway, paid him and handed the pizzas to my son. I then left for the match.

When I came home, the whole house smelled of smoke.

Apparently, my son took the pizza boxes inside, served himself, and put the two large cardboard boxes in the electric oven to keep them warm. He turned on the oven to 200 degrees. One of the boxes touched the element and started to burn.

Son, being downstairs engrossed in Facebook, was unaware of this fire until the smoke alarms started going off. He called his dad, who advised him to -- and I am not making this up -- take the boxes out of the oven and put them on the back patio. There were two mostly consumed cardboard boxes on the patio table, with ashes and hunks of partially burned cardboard on the tile below the table.

Dad definitely blew the "What to do in case a pizza box catches fire" test, but I am sure he could handle a nosebleed.

So, if your child was dying and needed to go to the hospital, but it was Sunday morning and you needed to get to church, then it's just too bad for the child?

Sounds like he handled it OK to me, but I'm just a husband. "If a man says something in a forest and his wife isn't around to hear him, is he still wrong?"

Heh, heh. It's never a good idea to instruct a child to remove a burning paper object from an oven and run across the house with it.

Better to just leave it in the oven to burn itself out, and open all the doors and windows for the smoke, I think.

Men. Can't live with 'em, can't kill 'em.

I think what Polski was trying to say is that he would first sacrifice his child on an alter, put the blood on the doorpost, ensure his loins were girded, sandals on his feet, staff in his hand hand, grab a few slices of unleavened bread (eaten in haste of course), and then head off to church.

On the way home, he would grab some cortisone cream.

Even if he got the day of the week right, the question shows a lack of understanding, I think.

I mean, say the question was: If you were in church/mass/temple and someone started firing a machine gun, would it be a sin to flee the building?

Sheez.

Keep it up with the stories board members - you're making rich and single easier to cope with.

But remember: these kids know how to use computers - and might find you badmouthing them here. And THEY will be the ones picking the nursing home you get put in... :)

I was at a World Team Tennis match and they announced on the loudspeaker after the first match for me to go to the front desk. Therer I learned that my son was in the hospital with a broken arm. My neighor had called them several times over the preceding hour (long before the match started) asking them to page me. My son couldn't be treated until I got there. This delayed his treatment for over an hour and a half. I will never go to another World Team Tennis match again.

This was about 8-9 years ago and I didn't have a cell phone. My wife had one, but the neighbor didn't know the number. Still, there was no question that they had at least 20-30 minutes before the match started when they could have paged me and certainly could have paged me during the changeovers. What got me was the head of the WTT team (not the coach) knew my son had broken his arm and was in the hospital and made absolutely no attempt to contact me. They can yell out all kinds of ridiculous things during those matches and they can't call out the name of a parent whose kid is in the hospital?

i've heard some loud ones, but they still most liekly wouldnt be noticable inside a bag. but i say, you have 90 seconds between changeovers, i say use it however you want...rather you wanna text someone, or play a video game on your iphone...i would say maybe calling people should be banned, but say you have a voicemail that should be okay. but after that 90 seconds, your time is up and have to go and play. and if you don't you should get point penalties. for like every 15 seconds!

Maybe next time bring your kid to the WTT match where you can keep an eye on him and maybe he will get into tennis. You know what they say, the family that plays togetheter, stays together.

In our league, they adopted the new cell phone ban in the middle of the season. I'm not sure what prompted this, but I heard through the grapevine that some folks were putting their cells right on the bench etc. The vibration can be heard. Also, they would call/text during the break, which could be coaching.

Now, the rule is you can only have your phone on (in silent mode) if you are an emergency worker on call. Otherwise, if your phone rings/vibrates at any time that is automatic loss of point.

That said, folks are already ignoring the rule. On account of how it is kind of extreme. I see no reason why warning and then loss of point isn't appropriate.

who cares? its irrelavant, if i had a child, and my child was injured i'd gladly forfeit that match to go and be with them...and i'm sure almost all parents wood...

might seem irrelevant to you but not to the mentioned head coach, who might think it a bit less relevant if you are playing and decide not to tell you.

Well, maybe all Norwegians wood.

Yes, isn't it good.

I once got a call
or should I say
it once got me?

She called me because
our schoolboy was hurt,
bleeding in th'head.

She asked me to drive him
as her car was stuck in the shed.
Garage remote battery
had simply gone dead.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ret'd that match
rushed home and took
them to ER

2 hours later
a spot of glue
2 double A's
and all was well.....

Except a month later
when the doctor's bill
was four hundred and ten!

I once had a call
or should I say
It once had me?

Oh, and it's all true, except that it really wasn't during an actual match. Just drilling threes.

BRILLIANT Sliced BH !

BTW, Paul is playing at the ballpark in frisco tonight, for the first time since their last US performance, in the late '60s. I've got the original poster for it. I wasn't there, but because of all the teeny-boppers screaming, you couldn't hear anything anyway.

Wiki has an interesting story about the origin of the song, it's about a disguised affair and arson. I've got to go to the bath now.

Cheers
