Emma Is The Most Marketable Player In History.

Does she hold Chinese or Rumanian citizenship? Does she carry a Chinese or Rumanian passport? No? It is interesting that she still carries a Canadian passport.

Does Canada allow dual citizenship with England? Does England allow dual citizenship with Canada?

Why did Emma's family choose to make her a naturalized U.K. citizen? Any advantages to that? She might not have been given a wild card to Wimbledon without U.K. citizenship.

It is generally a policy matter and arrangement between two respective countries.

The country of "England" doesn't issue passports.

You guys are so ridiculously ill-informed on even the most basic and fundamental issues of reality.

No wonder your ancestors fled the kitchen when they couldn't stand the heat...

Calm down. The U.K. is a country of countries. We are aware of this rather odd anomaly. Although Sir Murray supports an independent Scotland. Will see how that goes.

Now, why did Emma change from Canadian to English citizenship. Any advantages.

So why do you talk about "England" as if it were a meaningful geopolitical entity?

Just admit that you don't know what the bloody hell you're talking about.

Emma is 100% British, and is only technically Canadian, due to being born there.

British colonies - such as Canada - generally afford citizenship on a jus soli basis. So, of course she's always technically a Canadian citizen.

Emma is "100% British" and only "technically Canadian" is it? Here are some facts for you:
Emma moved to England as a toddler. Osaka moved to America as a toddler.
So based on your dunderhead logic, Osaka, who played for Japan at the Olympics, is 100% American and only "technically Japanese".

Firstly, the USA is an artificial nation with no meaningful cultural history.

Secondly - and more pertinently - Naomi chooses to represent Japan. This isn't something which an independent observer can ascribe to her.

It may be alien to people from the colonies, but national identity is actually an important cultural concept in historic nations.

One doesn't need to have ancestors who traversed Doggerland to be British.

You are saying that if Osaka had emigrated to England instead of America she would not have chosen to represent Japan.

That, however, is also the difference between moving from Japan to either of USA or UK and moving from Canada to USA/UK. The cultural dislocation is not nearly the same. That is part of the reason Osaka chose to represent Japan (the other part being her family saw big bucks in the bargain and signed up for it). I don't think an Indian origin kid born in the US or who grew up from the age of 2 or so would say they still feel more Indian than American. My cousins in the USA can't speak a word of Hindi or Tamil. And while there are others who can, I don't think they would say they don't feel American.

No, I'm saying that the fact she opts to represent Japan isn't something which should be judged from an outsider's perspective.

As far as I'm aware, she is eligible to represent the USA, Japan, or Haiti. Her nationality isn't up for debate.

You are obviously not aware that she visited ( pre pandemic ) her Chinese grandmother every year, speaks 8/10 mandarin, so I have no doubt her marketing people will use that to leverage her income potential, but phoney, not even close.

Exactly. A two year old does not remember where she was born. She is essentially as American as someone born here of first generation Japanese or Indian immigrants. It was strictly a financial decision to play for Japan. There was no cultural dislocation. Schooled here since age two. She is Japanese only by technicality.

Yes, Osaka is only technically Japanese.
But a product of the woke educational system in the USA.

also ppl in comments said her mandarin was horrible.
and she smiles a bit too much too. I think that's why Fernandez made alllusions to her "fake" smile. Someone should shop Joker paint onto her face.

Emma was born in Toronto and holds a Canadian passport. She is free to play for Canada just as Osaka played for Japan. Her choice. But very unlikely as England has not had a female winner in ages and are fawning over her.

What aboot her strong Canadian accent, eh?

Let's be honest here: Canada is the international equivalent of a placebo.

It's no wonder that you guys want to tenuously claim an exemplar of British sporting exceptionalism as one of your own - you don't exactly stake a huge claim in international sport.

There could still be cultural dislocation depending on how Japanese or not her upbringing at home was. That is why I gave her benefit of doubt in my comment. If her mother says (almost speaking on behalf of both her daughters) that Naomi and her sister feel Japanese, it seems likely to me that the mother had something to do with it.

They both emigrated at around age two to English-speaking countries. Yet Emma is far more fluent in Mandarin (as a result of conversing with her mother) than Osaka is at Japanese. According to posts here, an 8/10 fluency versus 3/10 fluency. This suggests that her upbringing was not particularly Japanese.

Nothing wrong with her Mandarin (I do speak it quite OK); she just has an accent which is hard to place. Her mother is from the North, which has it's own accent but Emma's is something of a mix; natural for someone who learned a language abroad. And her family name is very recognizably Romanian so she'll be huge there whether she speaks the language or not :)

Try telling all Canadians born in Canada that they are simply 'technically a Canadian citizen'. Have fun!

It's not particularly "interesting".

Presumably, she would have travelled on her parents' passports until very recently.

Passports aren't a statement of national identity.
She carries her own Canadian passport, as she stated in the recent interview at New York. Those have to be regularly renewed.

She didn't "change" from Canadian, she is still a Canadian citizen as per her Canadian passport. You don't get a national passport unless you are a citizen. She is apparently a dual UK/Canadian citizen.

I admit I haven’t ready the most recent posts. As much as I was very happy with ER’s amazing efforts and her recent success, I am still amazing how there are still discussions about ER’s birth place and her “current” citizenship chosen by her parents.

One (genuine question) thiugh- let’s say ER isnt what she is and is in fact an international recognised criminal, would these TTW posts still insist on her British citizenship, or will she be a Canadian/Eastern European/Chinese?

It is not clear who chose her citizenship and at what age it happened. If you have a source that it "was chosen by her parents" let's hear it... It is possible that she persuaded her parents at age 17 to apply for British citizenship. Why? British tennis players are given preference for Wimbledon wild cards. To promote young local talent. She was ranked around #300 when she was awarded a wild card. Not likely a non-Brit with that low ranking receives a wild card.

Excellent. Canada has provided much opportunity for her parents and family. No need for her to renounce Canadian citizenship.

Possible.

(Let’s face it…) But I doubt ER would have convinced her parents that she wanted to become a British orpresent The UK at the age of 17, but it is possible.

I believe her parents would have triple checked which country of ER’s heritage/birth country/country of residence can provide the best support for her tennis career. It seems the LTA fits the bill. It was rather nice that ER was smart enough to thank the LTA during her multiple interviews/speeches.

look forward to seeing her again soon.

They would not "insist" on anything but they would grudgingly admit that she sadly is a Brit.

You come across as a little bit racist here, telling people that ER is not a "real Brit".

Lol. Not sure how you came into the conclusion about the last bit - Liekni said, it was a genuine question and it could possibly have been the case.
In any case, I can assure you that I am far far from a racist, not even a tiny bit.

Millions of Chinese kids were not looking up and identifying with Sharapova as they will be with Emma. Those Chinese kids now have Emma as their role model.

Emma identified with the Chinese player Ni La as her role model. Emma has some basic fluency in Mandarin, as that is her mother tongue. Her level of fluency is irrelevant. She is the first woman singles champion that can speak English and Chinese.

With another Slam win, Emma will be as huge in China as she is now in England. England is so desperate for a winner they have even elevated the unpleasant, crude, whiny, man-child Murray as some type of icon.

Imagine what will happen with a player from London that actually has a likeable on-court persona.

Again, the opportunity here is simply huge and unprecedented.

Li Na could speak English and Chinese.
