End of Federer's Career

I think he will play until he is injured or can no longer win slams. He wants to put a big slam gap between himself and Sampras so he will be the GOAT for as long as possible.

He has to be defeated to retire. he only knows tennis and that is all he does. other than milking cows,,, of course. As davydenko saids,,,, Federer only has tennis in his life,, and does nothing else..

The guy is as relaxed and fit as ever. If there's a chance for him to do the calendar GS, this is the year. I'd love to see that in my life time.

I agree.

This year does seem ripe for Fed to claim calendar GS especially as Nadal is out due to chronic recurring patellar tendinitis.

I love how folks keep raising the bar for him. It's about time he completes a CGS as well as a Serena Slam the next year. + Master's Cups both years as well.

:)

for some reason, i don't think that will be enough to change some of the minds on these forums.

There has never been a champ that has retired, and come back to win a CGS either, especially in a stronger-deeper-generation-era paradox.

35, he said.

And by the way, Fedface, Federer says there are more important things than tennis, he said so in his vic speech (iirc) such as friends and family.

Yet Fed has found the time to get two kids already, AND win a slam. How about Davy?

I quote myself:

His motivation is that he loves playing tennis, and he loves competing. It isn't about achievements or records, because he's already done it all. He has nothing to prove. But he isn't likely to lose his love for the game.

He wants to play at least until 35, if he's healthy. He said that. Why do you come up with such stupid statements?

I'm pretty sure he said before he wants to play 2012 Olympics. So at least another 2 yrs...after that, who knows.

Do you guys think that Federer gonna be a coach in the future?

Surely he has a hobby, or something he does in his spare time off court.....?

Just look at Murray and look at where his hobby got him with his girl.

As a fan I want to see him play forever. As that can't happen, I want him to graciously exit at his peak (I think he has several more quality years left).

I'm just contemplating the end of his career. Some retire at their peak. Some get bored (like MJ taking baseball). Some retire and make a comeback. Some are overtaken by newer and talented players. Some succumb to injuries. It is going to be interesting as to what might happen to the GOAT.

LOL at thoses who say that Federer only know to play tennis. Even if it's true, i'll take his career any day. I mean, the guy will be remembered for a long long time and people write book about him ... there no shame in here.

I expect him to play for a long time. This is a guy who has not had any major injuries other than his mono and back problems. His body will probably last a long time. As for motivation, I think if he wins a calendar slam and a singles gold medal he will have nothing else to go for.

Fed just won his 16th major. The word retirement should not even be in the same sentence.

You say it like he's going to go hungry if he stops playing, haha :).

He will play as long as he is in contention to win majors, i will say beyond when he dominates, i think he will still be playing in 2014

federer loves the game and has said before that he wants to play into his thirties. incredibly he's still the main contender at every slam at 28, but i don't know if he'll accept becoming a player who travels about losing in the 2nd round to adoring crowds. he may be able to accept defeat and carry on on tour, but surely he'll want a stable base for his kids? mirka must have a say in all of this.

I don't know how much humor you wanted to put in there, I just think it's not even slightly funny.

LOL @ davydenko...

Anyway, I think Fed will play as long as he can.
He really wants to play for his kids to watch him as he says so I'm sure he still has the motivation.

Yeah, I remember reading something along those lines.

He wants to play long enough for his kids to see him play. 4-5 years, his daughters can see him play.

I wonder if Federer sees it as a case of:

"I've just broken Sampras' record, can I make it stand the test of time?"

"I've just won my 16th Major, can I make it 17?"

"I've just won my first French Open, can I defend my title next year?"

"I've just equalled Agassi's record at the Australian Open, can I break it?"

etc etc...

That is not setting the bar high enough.. agreed, he has to win the CGS but he also has to win the golden slam and he has to do a year without losing a single match. On top of that he has to win a match where he plays on water and the guy on the other side of the net can choose whatever surface he likes to.

Fed mentioned he would consider retiring after the 2012 Olympic games. What had more to do with Federer winning the Australian open his level of play or the blx90 paintjob...

I think the blx90 paintjob had a large impact in him winning the Australian open. If he stayed with the k90 paintjob it's possible he may have been bounced in the semis or finals.
