...meaning when will you ever see not only the two most dominant players of their tennis generation (in terms of majors count), but (with a couple of exceptions) but the oldest who survived numerous physical problems faced and defeated players with more energy, "tennis life" left in them to win the first major of the year?
I do not expect to see this in the finals of any major going forward, making the victories of Serena Williams & Roger Federer a unique moment in time for the players, the fans and the sport's history.
It is almost like the sport "needed" this last reminder--a final acknowledgement / seal to that era, and all that it meant. Certainly, in the annals of tennis history, there are greater players on both sides, but no matter what personal feelings were/are about Serena & Federer, few can doubt the finals result is a special event because it was not random players winning, but the most significant players of the 21st century (so far) to win the first major of the year--nearly two decades old.
Yeah, yeah, I know it will not be long before we will all go back micro judging each player's alleged deficiencies (at least until the French Open arrives), but those deficiencies did not stop either from doing their job.
