Justine had everything to be adored: small size, pretty game, early family tragedy (lost her mom early and had to mature too soon to assume her mother's role), worked hard to be a top tennis player. She should have been a darling in tennis but her nasty attitude and lack of character wouldn't allow it.

I was trying to decide where/if to post my anger at JHH (a.k.a. Grease Hand) for that final. Her story--once again--just doesn't add up. (Stomach problems for several days that you can fight thru in the quarters and semis but not the final???) And she gave almost no credit to Mauresmo, who really was playing well this year.

You gotta admit, Rickson, that she's done some really shady stuff in the past, especially with injury timeouts in big slam matches. I honestly don't know what was going on with her this time, but it really did steal Mauresmo's thunder.

This being said, there certainly are too many threads on the topic, and people are too quick to assume that she did this on purpose. (I'm not sure what her motive would be--she doesn't hate Mauresmo. Did she fear the bagel?)

I have always love the intense competition in sports however, one thing I cannot tolerate is an athlete who plays dirty tactics. Justine was a selfish person and was 1000% wrong. As a long time tennis affecionado, it was embarassing to witness that display of classless punk out dirty tactics.

C'mon!!! A stomache ache made her quit in a Grand Slam Final with the whole world watching!!!

it's amazing how the australian crowd and coverage have neglected to point out what has actually happened here.
Instead, opting to through a veil over the controvesy and make as though we are in some sort of fairy land where everybody is nice to everybody.

Aeon, are you just going around all the JHH threads and saying the same things over and over? I understand your dire need to up your post count, not really, but seriously you need to stop. You and the other chronic JHH bashers are actually giving me a headache.

Believe it or not I was pulling for Justine. But Amelie came with a game plan and ROUTED Justine. Justine couldn't take it - and showed her true disgusting and repulsive colors by using gamesmanship to throw Amelie off.

Amelie wasn't having any of it. She continued to pummel Justine from side to side and out maneuver her. Then Justine threw in the towel. Nobody would have cared if it was in the 1st round - semis. But a FINAL!!!!

The effectively deminished Amelie's celebration with her nasty antics.

Therefore Justine has got to be one of the WORST WTA player to ever play the game!!!

holy hanna . . . i count 14 justine bashing threads in less than 24 hours! 15 if you count the poll. 16 if you count this one (cos she's getting bashed here, lord only knows why)

is that some kind of record on here? and i didn't even go into the matches forum, cos i'm sure she got bashed there, too.

i guess this is what an economist would call "market saturation."

It's obvious that she was just being beaten badly and was too proud to lose 6-1 6-0 with the crowd thinking Mauresmo was just much better than her. She needed an excuse. I'm sure she wasn't 100%, but she was hitting the ball fine, moving fine. The stomach probably just kept her from focusing on the match and finishing points. If it was really hurting her, how would getting off the court help at all? How about just expending less energy on the court. Slicing back shots, moving less...it would have been over in 20 minutes and Mauresmo could have had her moment.

Also...she's a little young to have menopause!

I'm no doctor, but I don't believe Justine has been on the planet long enough to be going through MENOPAUSE!!!

That being said, I was very disappointed in the way this final ended. I was looking forward to a very intense match between them. As in all other things in life, there are usually multiple factors involved in something. I believe the two main factors were this:
1. Justine actually DID have some sort of stomach ailment
2. Amelie was kicking Justine's butt all over the court.

Justine should have taken the butt whipping in front of the world. That's what puts the "pro" in professional. It ain't always gonna be your day!

I agree. I mean, why would you do it in the final if you aren't really really sick? Have you people (you as the ones bashing Justine) ever even had stomach trouble caused by medicines? Well, I have..and trust me, you can't play against Mauresmo in an AO final with that kind of feeling and pain.

I believe arosen meant menstruation. Just another example that the spoiled little kids on this board will lash out at everything.

I'm pretty sure most of the bashing comes from those who will never forgive or forget the FO incident against Serena. They refuse to admit that it was a minor incident and Serena lost that day because she started spraying UEs all over the court and whining about every line call which got the French crowd to turn on her.

One more thing: think of all the quarterfinal and semifinal matches that you (and I) got ready to watch that involved Mauresmo, expecting a good match. Then Amelie came out and stunk up the joint. She's probably cost me a lot more wasted time than JHH throwing in the towel with 4 or 5 games to go.

This Nalbandian guy needs to be banned ASAP. His direct verbal assaults of other posters, calling them "mo-Ron Pikes", "jackasses", "idiots", "retards", "Dwarves", etc is embarrassing and offensive. His lack of courtesy is a shame to himself and it demeans the aura of kindness that used to, until his presence, maintain a rather steady hold over the boards. If anyone is with me in getting this kid banned for breaking rules and being a jerk to everyone, we need to make our voices heard.

Bad mistake?!?! Get a grip. She quit in a championship game, no excuse for that.

Her stomach hurt and she didn't feel well? Then why did you stay through the awards ceremony, the press conference AND carry her own bags out to her car?

She could have finished the match, she just didn't want to. Her behavior shouldn't be tolerated. Period.

Not a bad point. But my reaction just feels different here. With Mauresmo (and Davenport), I just get annoyed/disappointed at the lack of mental strength. But JHH and the injuries--it just always seems like they come out at the most inopportune times for her opponents. And they *feel* strategic.

If JHH had at least admitted that Mauresmo was playing great, beating her despite the injury--rather than implying M was winning because of it--I'd have some sympathy for her.

The weight of JHH's history with these things warrants some (not all) of the outrage here.

Oh so you think walking to the car or sitting at the press conference and playing tennis in a final are the same thing?
Yeah, totally..each time I walk to my car I feel like I've played a 3-setter

Edberg retired against Lendl in the AO Final in...what was it, 1993? That has nothing to do with this?;)

And Edberg in my memory has never been called classless. He did stay for the prize presentation and all, just as JHH did.

You're right that you don't lose a match because of one point. What makes people mad (IMO), is how Henin deals with the issues in the postmatch interviews. Very calculated, even denying. She lied about RG, okay you get over that, but the way her interview went at the AO was again a big lie. I saw her saying the day before that she never felt as fit?

That means absolutely *nothing*. Have you ever heard of any successful athlete that would tell the world (and the opponent) that they are ill/unfit just before a match? That would be just plain *STUPID*.

Now, there might be other things that can be valid things to complain about this incident, but that is not one of them.

Why do you keep making this about Serena & the FO Ace - you have some kind of weird hangup here? The fact is it is atrocious that JHH bailed instead of toughing it out for 4 more games. I too heard all the hype about both these women saying they felt they were in the best shape possible going into the match - and then to quit because of an upset stomach? These are professionals, right?

Yes, u are right. Everybody loses sometimes. Even Fed lost to the boy - Gasquet once. So what else ?

Not to say I dislike Mauresmo, not. I like her as a person, and find her tennis is great also, BTW very similar to Henin's. IT IS WHY they played head to head as 4:4. Similar style.

But I admire with tennis of Henin not less. If nature had given to Henin such a health as to Mauresmo or Serena Williams she could have crashed them both.

If we are to bring history into judging what occured, then it's only fair to bring up her numerous matches in which she had fought from the brink of the match. Being down a set and a break is nothing compared to her epic battles with Davenport and Capriati. The USO '03 Semis was a titanic match trailing 3-5 in the second and 2-5 in the third. She cramped and still fought through without the trainer. To think after this that she quits because she has, what your poor syntax describes as a 'tummy ache' is asanine. She had severe gastro problems, which had to be in such magnitude for her to withdraw.

Btw, carrying tennis bags is nothing compared to competing in a match. i'd like you guys to try both and tell me which is more physically taxing. The only possible way some of you would be satisfied is if Justine had collapsed with a seizure or tanked the match. in which event im sure you could come up with some reason why she was cheating amelie and the fans out of a true final.

He's been all over this Board defending HH's indefensible punking out...almost as if he has a vested interest in her...hmmmmmm....even using the race/sexual orientation card and plunging the depths of past grand slam tournament history to, somehow, justify Justine. Lame. She's a punk, characterwise...deal with it, Westlimpwristcoast.

Dude, I think you're confusing me with someone else here. My syntax was perfectly fine, and I didn't even make several of the claims you respond to here (nor did I use the term 'tummy ache'). And besides, it's a cheap shot to comment on someone's language use if it's not a relevant part of the discussion.

But to flame the fire a bit--I had both of those matches (Davenport and Capriati) in mind as examples of her potential shadiness. I can't say with 100% certainty that her cramping was or wasn't legit in those cases, but her injury timeouts sure were conveniently timed. I've been flooded with "you don't understand how cramps work, etc." posts in the past, and I simply don't care. My gut reaction during that Davenport match was that Henin used the injury timeout as an excuse to turn the match around and throw off Davenport's rhythm. She went from writhing on the ground to sprinting to "hurting" and walking slow to sprinting again. She likely had some cramps, but it really looked like a performance after a while.

You notice this too, Phil? Westlimpwristcoast has been right there trying to use Serena's race & Momo's sexual preference to smokescreen what you astutely call "HH's indefensible punking out". Congratulations to Amelie, she outplayed and outclassed JHH.

Since I was not rooting for any particular lady in the Final, I just wanted to see a good match. In the past I’ve thought of Mauresmo as a “flake” ... and JHH’s character has been “suspect” all along.

But, if you can ... subtract ... their personalities from their games, both ladies have really lovely games. (Talk about ambivalent feelings. Two women who I think are both “wacky” are in the Final ... and they both can do things with the ball few women can.) So I set my sights low; I hoped merely for a good match.

Boy! Was I surprised to see how focused ... dominating ... commanding Amelie was...! What great tennis!!!

Of all the possible results, “Amelie obliterates Justine” was not one of the outcomes I considered. Wow, that was good tennis.

I used to think Justine had more heart than any WTA player. She is just a punk to me now.

I used to think Amelie was the only WTA player who could give Zvonareva a run for the biggest flake on their Tour. Amelie Mauresmo is a Slam event Champion to me now.

Kudos, Amelie!!!
