Forget about everything else, let's focus on tennis.
Doubles players are in deep holes. Men's, women's, and mixed doubles champions combined make less than women's singles champion, everywhere. Why is nobody going on strike for equal pay for doubles players? We all understand that it is about who sells more tickets and TV ads, who makes more money for the tournaments. Why should it be any different when it comes to comparing male and female singles?
Here is my proposed solution for pay equality: Every tennis pro, male, female, singles, doubles, makes a base salary. All tournaments should put money together for this base salary. And this base salary reflects pay equality across age, sex, singles/doubles, citizenship, etc. Prize money should be based solely on merit and market. Tournaments should be free to pay appearance fees to attract certain stars, who draw crowd for just showing up.
Therefore, a player's income = base salary (equal pay) + prize (performance based) + appearance fee (fame based)
