I think most tennis fans would prefer to watch a match between players with contrasting styles, and a 5-set match that lasts 3 1/2 hrs rather than a baseline slugfest between two players with similar styles and a 5-setter that could go 5 hours. Federer and Nadal are also much more interesting and charismatic personalities than Murray and Djokovic. Djokovic was more interesting when he was doing impersonations, but now he's just boring and there's nothing to like about Murray's on-court personality or demeanor.

2017 S. Williams 3:00 AM 0.6 926K Federer 3:00 AM 0.7 1.09M
2016 Kerber 3:00 AM 0.5 679K Djokovic 3:00 AM 0.4 527K
2015 S. Williams 3:00 AM 0.6 805K Djokovic 3:00 AM 0.4 557K

It appears Fed and Nadal are twice as popular as Murray and Djok

i guess these are statistics why womens tennis has its place..
unless federer/nadal are playing, women's tennis beats men in ratings..
not to mention the sharapova/ivanovic match from a few years back still had twice as many viewers as this years federer/nadal match...

Federer + Nadal of course would have the highest rating. But Federer + anyone else in the top 5 would have the second highest rating. It's mostly due to Federer. Crowd preferred Federer. That's always been the case.

ESPN reported that Federer/Nadal final TV rating was 0.9, up 80% from last year final between Nole/Murray. Starting 3:30 am ET Sunday, the network said it likely will be the most-watched program at that hour in ESPN history.
Of course all those balding middle-to-old age middle class midlife crisis having men drawing false hope from stopping the erosion of age pushing the "Yes I Approve!" button! :P

Ya, but men play longer than women, more ad revenue (commercial change over). Not sure how it balances in the end.
