ESPN is placing more content exclusively behind the ESPN Unlimited paywall.

On Thursday, ESPN announced its coverage plans for Wimbledon, which begins in four days. Much of the network’s linear coverage remains the same, with ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 all contributing extensive coverage throughout The Championships. However, many fans might be frustrated to hear that the freedom to select individual matches to watch, rather than rely on the ESPN-curated match coverage on the linear networks, has moved to ESPN Unlimited. In previous years, viewers only needed the more affordable ESPN+ (now ESPN Select) subscription to gain access to every Wimbledon match.

ESPN made a similar decision earlier this year when it moved Australian Open matches behind the ESPN Unlimited paywall.

The decision marks another incremental step by ESPN to encourage viewers to subscribe to ESPN Unlimited, be that through a pay-TV provider or via a direct subscription, which runs $30 per month. By comparison, an ESPN+ subscription is available for just $13 per month.

Luckily, ESPN has slowly but surely rolled out ESPN Unlimited authentication for most major cable, satellite, and virtual pay-TV providers, meaning most users that access ESPN through a linear bundle can access ESPN Unlimited at no additional cost. The major exception is YouTube TV and its over 10 million subscribers, all of whom are still waiting for authentication privileges to ESPN Unlimited. Prior reports suggest access will be given to YouTube TV subscribers before football season.


However, for those operating outside of the pay-TV bundle, the price of watching Wimbledon has more than doubled as compared to last year, when only ESPN+ was necessary to view all matches. Considering the fact that all ESPN+ content is available to users who are able to authenticate into ESPN Unlimited, the decision to move Wimbledon content off of ESPN+ and onto Unlimited is directed entirely at this cohort of viewers.

From a business perspective, this makes sense for ESPN. That particular cohort of viewers are the most likely to see value in an ESPN Unlimited subscription, and perhaps convert into a subscriber. I think I was able to watch all the matches on espn+ for AO. Like they had a stream for plus subscribers with different announcers

Watching doubles on Tennis TV is elite. Sometimes no commentary at all.

Sadly, I will not be providing more value to the Disney shareholders. $30 for Wimpleton is stupid.
 
if you still get ESPN with cable, the first week will be only ESPN, but the second week ESPN2 joins up with it

Soon I will be baking under the hot sun on Court 5 in flushing again and nothing beats that. I walked by it a couple weeks ago and could immediately feel the joy!

Yup, sucks. Wish it weren't so, but that's the way it is.

Anyone know if Tennis Channel is going to at least have daily discussion/recaps, perhaps some match highlights? I did a quick scan but didn't see anything on their site about Wimbledon 2026.

 
Will there still be some matches that are only on ESPN+?
For Oz ESPN and ESPN2 were sort of the main feed court and any major highlights with almost too much in studio commentary over live court action. Hence you often needed ESPN+ or ESPN Unlimited to watch the main court fully or to watch the 2ndary courts. But I think there are some courts that are just on ESPN+ while the main and some of the side are on unlimited?

Read this the other day. Super lame. It was already annoying enough during Australia when a lot of matches I wanted to watch were blacked out cause we only have Plus. I checked the schedule the other day and it looked like everything was Unlimited only.

Since jokerstream seemingly died I haven't known where else to go. Might just be following livescores this year (n)

Just makes you wonder how many years before we just have to pay for direct access to every match.

I’ve never had a match I couldn’t watch with ESPN+ they normally have different announcers though. Also sometimes the Spanish feed is an option. That’s how I watch the World Cup. Telemundo FTW

Then either you have an ESPN subscription through your cable/internet provider, paying for unlimited, or you just aren't paying attention.

As a few of us have already pointed out, you could not watch the later rounds or most of the 'premier" court matches during this year's AO with just ESPN plus.

So far not bad. Roddick commentary was really good and they haven't ignored mens tennis like TC does.

Also, surprisingly it hasn't been 100% talking about the return of Serena. Tomorrow will be a different matter though.
 
It's ********. The company itself can't even explain their own coverage tiers.

Their own explanation seems to indicate that ESPN+ and a cable subscription should get all content outside of "originals".

Unlimited is supposed to be an all in one plan for streaming only customers, but for tennis they are taking content away from ESPN+.

So now if you have cable or a live tv subscription you have to pay for the same content twice to get all the courts.
 
ESPN has the broadcast rights for three of the four GS events where acquisition of the rights runs in the millions of dollars. Also Warner Bros/Discovery has the rights to the FO were all court coverage is on HBO Max. So the consumer is going to “chip-in”.
 
It’s not about the cost of ESPN Unlimited. It’s about respect. I think viewers give much more than what we are getting back. It’s not only for the top viewers, but it’s also for all of us viewers.

Roddick was good. Caroline & both male Chris' too.
I mute it when Blake's commenting. He almost never gives any credit to foreign players unless it Sinner or Alcaraz.
 
I've tried to watch a few of the matches on Unlimited. Everytime I've tried to watch I get about 5 minutes before it freezes up.
My other on demand content from Comcast rarely freezes.
Anyone else getting this? Does the App just not perform for most?
Just wondering if it is a me problem or the App.

Miss TNT coverage with 2 live channels and TC with dubs. So much easier access along with HBO max.
 
ESPN's main match. It used to be we may miss 1 point during a changeover after their extended commercial break.
Now you can miss an entire serving game - Safiullen & Fonseca.
They came back after Saf won the game serving 40-30 so I missed 6 six points due to commercials and coming back with footage of the people eating in the cafe' area and Wimbledon Forehand speed stats. WT_ is this?
Fonseca then holds quickly, it's back to commercials, not other live court action.
There has to be an alternative sports network ....and now I hear the apps freezes up too? Does this happen with EuroSport or Sport TV?

But you will be watching Serena winning the AO a decade ago 10 times a day. Like what the hell is the commercial appeal of that?

I noticed that they seemed to have changed their format from even last year…much more whip around—to the point of leaving the audience hanging!!! There is like one more point or it’s deuce and they cut to another match (a lame one for example) or into the studio for NO reason. And instead of doing the commercial breaks as normal on the changeover they are cutting into the first points of the next game with extended commercial time!!

I remember there are lots of threads on here wondering how they are going to "speed up tennis", for many reasons, including the one that people have shortened attention spans…it was discussed that maybe the tennis game itself would be changed but I think we are seeing how the media will change coverage first to deal with it. I actually think jumping away at the points they do shortens viewer attention span even more, as well as doesn’t keep you interested in any one match. Lol, I guess I’m a purist. but yeah.

ugh and please get Woz some media training please! And Chris McCendry (spelling!). I love Chris but she was so great as a host in studio and not good (other than genuine & likable) commentating on matches.
 
These days you pretty much need to use the ESPN app to get decent coverage. The main network feed is just talking heads dipping into obscure women's matches, followed by gossip segments about what makeup Serena wears. Dreadful Disneyfication of sports coverage.

i caught literally a 5=7 minute segment the studio & Chris Eubanks had to do on Monday the day BEFORE Serena’s match where they analyzed to death what TIME the match would likely come up and what the weather would be like. it was like a hurricane analysis AND it was breaking news style…like they literally broke into the current match on to report this!! It might have even been split screen for a portion of it. They did split screen Serena practicing while like 10 other matches were going on. It’s all over the top ridiculousness. Hopefully she’s done.

Yeah the app sounds like the right way to go.

They really do whip around even during a tiebreaker if another match has a match point, usually American.
Maybe they're formatting it like golf where they don't care about certain players when they're serving or some newbie marketing exec at Disney.

I poked around online a few times this week trying to find when exactly Wimbledon would be on ABC (broadcast) in the US, and couldn't ever find anything definitive. But just tuned in this morning and it's on now. The "Info" button on one tv in the house shows 9am-2pm PT, another shows 1pm-4pm ET. (I suspect the latter is accurate.)

Pleasant surprise that it's on at all, but wish they wouldn't make it so hard.

Sabalenka/Osaka coming up.
 
Yes seems the goal is to show less actual live tennis by rotating channels, limiting ESPN broadcast windows, force you to go to the APP--which has bugs and even when they are broadcasting live on ESPN find a way to not show tennis but hype and sideshow.

Yes! Every court has a good camera angle. AO should take note and fix their outer courts which are almost unwatchable with terrible angles. Wimby showed it's not that hard to have a good angle on smaller courts.
I don't have cable so I have to pay the $30 but at least you can watch whichever court you want.

The resolution on HBO FO coverage was pretty amazing, makes TC look like the stone age. Dolby vision, whatever that is.

ESPN is owned by Disney has the broadcast rights to three of the four GS, while Warner Bros/Discovery who owns HBO Max has the broadcast rights to the FO. This has been discussed at length. The network ability to acquire the rights is getting pricey, so the ability to watch it is going to get pricey. That's in all sports, not just tennis.
 
It's very difficult to watch tennis in the U.S. It's expensive to get complete coverage, and where to watch changes not only tournament to tournament (clay, grass, hard court), but year to year. This year the new kid on the block for 3 of the 4 majors is ESPN Unlimited.

No wonder there are fewer great American players coming up recently. No place for the average sports fan to easily watch the games and then want to play.
 
I don't know. Feel like I've still seen some surveillance video.

Kind of wild that practically every tennis YouTuber with an iPhone on a stick has better video quality than billion dollar entities
