They pay all this money for to air tennis and the biggest match of the year is cancelled.

They actually moved this match to the big channel, ABC...

Do you think withdrawals like these will hurt the future of tennis broadcasting?

Not so terrible for ABC as the advertising time was already sold, sometimes they rebate a small percentage of that if the event doesn't come off as planned but I suspect they made out okay

on another network affiliate they were showing a macgruber rerun at the same time which makes me wonder why they arent showing more network tennis... i think tennis can be more popular if they show it on network tv more no matter who is playing

What interest would anyone that isn't a tennis addict would have in turning on the tv and watching, I don't know, a Carreño-Busta vs Kevin Anderson match. It would actually make people less interested in tennis.

Let's address the real problem here. Matches needs to be interesting to the viewers.

ABC lost big money. This was their real final and payback for their investment.

Nadal did a Bernie Madoff.
Since ESPN is basically part of ABC which is all owned by Disney this was a just a decision on where to air - it's not like ABC outbid for it or anything. I'm sure they were disappointed but I doubt it was a major loss money wise.

Nadal is the :happydevil:.
How dare he that a media and entertainment company as small as Disney lose money?

It's the biggest match in the sense that the general public in the US probably have no clue about tennis so ABC probably thought they hit that jackpot when they got a Fedal match cos those people will just lap it up when they just hear of that matchup.

Why didn't Nadal concede his quarterfinal before the end of the match?

The pros used to do that for the good of the game, so as to not cancel a match in the next round.

Put it on the never ending list of reasons Ned will never be thought of in the same universe as Roger

I guess the good news is it hit every sports ticker in America that Roger wasnt the weak one yet again
