Evaluate my serve (1.5 months of playing) VIDEO

Ten.Is

Rookie
I've been playing for about 1.5 months. Well...here's my serve, sorry there is no sound I used my digital camera to record it. I would definitely love some constructive criticism but please don't reply with "Oh you suck" or "That's terrible". I've been playing for only 1.5 to 2 months. I think I made 5 out of 7 serves in when I recorded this clip.

Make sure your toss is centered on your body, you arch your back, keep your tossing arm up, and follow through(I didn't see this on any of the serves). This is a handful, but each of these were either incorrectly executed or missing on your serves. For 1.5 months that is wicked though. Best o luck

Good going for a month and a half. I couldn't backscratch properly for a year into my game.

Thanks,
I'm definitely going to work on that. I've been playing almost 4-5 times a week for about 3-4 hours a day. I'm planning on getting some lessons soon and even start playing some tournaments.

I think that you should check which grip you are using - the continental grip allows for more variety, and you could probably try changing. Also, your service motion seems a bit hurried. Toss the ball sufficiently high to allow you to arch your back and extend upwards to take the ball as it is descending from its zenith.

Hey just focus on your flat serve for now. The kick serve is alot harder so dont worry about it.
Also: I dont see whaat's working with your right foot. I think you should try line them um becuase it looks like your tripping over yourself!
Anyways, dont get too carried away by what people say. It's what feels most comfortable to you though you may not reach your full potential that's all.

how tall and how much do you weigh? I swear that when i saw the video it was me walking up to serve. Until you turned around of course. I can't really see your face. Are you asian?

Good serve for such a short time. But your form is off. You don't use your legs. At contact, your knees are still bent, so be sure to push off them. It's hard to tell unless you go frame by frame, but your shoulder rotation seems off. You don't rotate them enough to face the court. For your last serve, your contact point is too low.

Congrats on such a good serve in such a short time. What kind of serve are you trying to hit? If flat, then yes you are off balance (to your left) perhaps that is because of the toss,or because you are trying to hit higher without using your legs much ie overreaching and thereby leaning to the left.

Pretty good serve motion for a players who has only played for 2 months. Keep it up, good luck with your game.

For such a short ammount of time, that is very good (assuming that the balls went in). Only thing i notice is that you seem to be hitting the ball without your body fully extended. If you look at the pros, they bend thier knees but when they make contact with the ball thier body and arm is fully extended. You should also try to hit through the ball more...it looks like you are slapping the ball and not hitting through it...like look at this slo-mo clip of roddick, you can see his body is fully extended and he is hitting through the ball. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnfAxF5a8aE

Also, work on your toss...its vital to have a good and accurate toss since a bad toss will throw off you entire service motion

I'm about 5'8'' and weigh 150 pounds. My adidas shirt makes me look kinda fat cuz the shirt is wide.

Thanks guys for all the advice...I'll definitely take all this serious next time I head over to a court which will probably be tonight.

try throwing up the ball without bending your arm. your ball toss seems awkward and can be inconsistent. also, try and concentrate on shifting your weight forward. right now it seems that after you hit some of your weight shifts to the right while your arm and head are still leaning forward/left, causing you to lose balance.

Looks good for a beginner and for your height. You do fall off to your left at the end of the serve instead of straight into the court but looks very good for having just started playing. What percentage land in the box when you serve like that? I am sure it will improve with more practice as your technique is pretty good.

heh
a lot of beginners serve like OP does
i dunno why
but i somehow got the hammer motion down pretty naturally..
right now its just my toss ( still the damn toss is bothering me)
if i can get the toss right i pop it pretty good)
if i dont have the decent toss and i hit it... its crazy slice/spin serve but it hurts my shoulder :(

Actually most of my serves go in. When I recorded I think it was like 5 out of 7. My serves are actually pretty strong as well, aces are a common thing especially when I play my friends.

yeh...
ur friends r proly ur level...
return of game doesnt develop really until u get more practice in

change grip to continental, it'll mess you up for a while, but when you get it down you'll be able to hit way way harder and have far more variety. with a forehand grip, your contact point has to be more in frontwith your arm not fully extended, so swerving from a lower position you're sacrificing your height. i'm only like 5'5" but i serve bigger than any of my friends (6'0" and up on varsity) becasue of proper form.

i just want to reiterate the fact that balance is key. you should be able to land inside the court on your left foot without falling off to the side. if you can land inside the court on your left foot without losing your balance, then your weight transfer is how it should be.

My friends are not anywhere near my level. I think you're under-estimating my skills for 1.5 months. I can return serves pretty easily. I'll provide video for my forehand, backhands, and slices.

ii'd suggest changing to the continental grip, it will be tough to master but better to learn it now than a year in

if your friends are nowhere near your level i can see how aces would be a common thing, also keep in mind if you continue with that grip that your serve will not get much better, i'd say you could have fantastic other serve mechanics but with that grip your serve could not go over 3.5 level

I actually tried the continental grip tonight...played for about 3 hours. It was kinda awkard, but with alot of people telling me to change my grip I guess I can keep trying.

Oh yea...guys...I want to get new strings for my racquet...the current strings are moving around way too much. What do you guys suggest?
