Even as a Nadal fan....

I wouldn't mind Thiem winning at RG this year.
Rafa looks like hes missing something this year, and Thiem deserves IMO to go further this year and win the slam.
Unfortunately for him, his form never really lasts for several tournaments running.
This has made the rest of the clay season even more interesting. Just what the tour needs tbh.
Maybe even Medvedev can surprise us. But the tour is looking up now after years of Fedalovic domination.

Remember Thiem vs Nadal in Rome 2017?
Remember Thiem vs Nadal in Madrid 2018?

And remember Thiem vs Nadal at RG 17 and RG 18?

I still think there’s like a 99 % chance one of Djokodal wins RG 19. Quote me on this if I’m wrong.

Yes I do remember Thiem played great especially the Madrid beating. But im talking about nadal when I say this.
I wasn't really worried last year by the time he lost in Madrid or Rome 2017. He cant even win the tournaments at the beginning of the clay season this year, that's the big worry.

Yes, but there is one small difference. In 2017 and 2018 Nadal never played as horrible as he did in Monte Carlo 2019. I wouldn't even be worried about his form if not what happened in MC. He wasn't even that bad today, Thiem just outplayed him. However, MC is what makes me think Nadal might not be in form this year.

You make the mistake of thinking MC/Barcelona matter anymore to Nadal. He's firmly in one mind now - win 4 more slams to surpass Federer.

That’s crap. He is in the same mind as always - win every match, especially on clay - and he is just as many slams behind now as in 2014.

Today he did seem a bit better than a couple weeks ago, but he is still playing poor for his standards. With Madrid coming up, which is not his best hunting ground, he’ll need to do well in Rome to gain some confidence for RG.

With respect, i’m not too convinced about this. I agree completely that Nadal and Djokovic are still overwhelming favourites for RG and will remain so even in the (still unlikely) event that either one goes in to RG without a clay title.

But being beaten in tournaments he used to own is categorically not good for Nadal. He should be winning one of MC or Barcelona. He didn’t make the final in either. Something is not quite right at the moment and it has nothing to do with prioritising slams.

Fully agree on this. Clay season in particular needs new winners. No disrespect to Rafa, who I feel sure will be ready for RG.

I am torn every time Thiem and Raf play. I really enjoy both so I am never upset at the results. So yeah, I am all for Domi taking any clay titles, especially RG.

It would certainly be refreshing. :)

It definitely would be refreshing, however, I don't want poor quality from the likes of Nadal or Djokovic. I would like to see them at their top level and be beat. Still want good tennis.

Then again, many people always say if one of those two lose it was because they were in poor form or injured, so the "refreshing" winner might not get the accolades they deserve.

Im quoting you for the opposite reason. I'm backing this 99,9%.

No need to when Rafa's dropping balls at the service line.
Disagree here. Nadal did not play overall bad or passive. Rafa's shots were overal deep, just Thiem was hitting even stronger. Nadal's main mistake were those double faults in the first set and some unforced errors in crucial moments in the second set. But overall, Thiem showed a serious improvement from 2017/2018 IMO.

I think only Nadal can stop Thiem at RG. Not sure about Djokovic.

Did you forget that Thiem was destroyed by Lajovic in Monte Carlo? At his best he is very good, but he is too inconsistent to say he will be unstoppable in RG.

At some point in time the clock has to stop ticking...

Did you forget that Thiem is only inconsistent outside clay? He is a clay specialist, and at RG 2017 and RG 2018 only lost to Nadal. There is no way he will lose at RG to someone not called Nadal, or maybe Djokovic, if he loses at all.

Nadal's impending marriage is obviously weighing on his mind. Questions like what suit to wear are distracting him. And his fiance says he can't wear Nike.

Based on your comment I guess you expect Nadal will improve for RG?

I think it would be so refreshing to see Thiem winning RG but I don't know. Nadal and Djokovic will be there and they will be ready.

It will be a freaking 'tennis massacre' in Paris. Probably the most anticipated major this year. I watched some interviews with Djokovic and he just can not stop talking about RG. He even said something like 'THAT IS MY MISSION'. I kinda got scared .

difference is this year,, RAFA and novak are Stinking on clay. and making Tons of UE's we haven't seen from them on clay.

I knew Nadal's clay game wouldn't be the same. He's altered his game to be more aggressive, flattening out strokes and putting speed over spin on his serve, adjustments that serve him better on grass than clay. In fact, right now I give him a better chance to win Wimbledon than to win Madrid (both at about 50%). He's a completely different player now.

That said, best of 5 is a completely different animal. He's still the overwhelming favorite for RG. It will take a Herculean effort to beat him there, no matter how bad his form is. It can't be 2015 levels, after all.

Can you see Thiem beating both Djokovic and Nadal to win the FO?

He could lose to Fognini Tsitsipas Zverev (if he finds some kind of form) Goffin Fed Nishikori. He is inconsistent.
