It took 18 tries and over a decade 1987 for Shriver to beat an opponent who lost first to Turnbull in 1979, Mandlikova in 1980, Jordan in 1983, Sukova in 1984, and Garrison in 1985. In those first 18 matches, Shriver, who had already long since beaten everyone in the sport for two generations, had won two sets and reached a tiebreaker in three total sets. Considering how many of the meetings were on carpet or grass, it must have been extraordinarily frustrating for the perennial top tenner.
