Everybody Hyeon Chung Tonight!

Couldn't resist, especially after he took me out in the SDL league:cry:!

6'0, 175 and bespectacled, he's 18 years old and been lighting up the Challengers in Australia and the Orient (1 win and 2 SFs). Is he another of the young crop to watch now that he's won his first ATP main draw match?

Glad to see you keep churning out the young guns threads!! Chung has been extremely consistent in the challengers. Seems he makes the semis of almost every one he enters. You actually neglected to mention a final . So just since January thats 1W, 1F, and 2SF if I'm not mistaken.

Nice to see him start playing on the bigger stages, and the match with Berdych should be revealing of where he is at.

I remember watching him drive Coric insane in the Junior Boys' at Wimbledon. He's a very pure ball-striker.

We are going to Helsinki:)

It looks like this guy beat Coric and Kygios in junior tournaments.

Of course, the difference is that Coric is aided by Djokovic,Cilic and Ivanesvic
and Kygrios is guided by Rafter.

Hope this korean kid gets some world class support...

Yeah, it's about time for the grand breakthrough of a Korean tennis player! It's a popular sport there, so who knows, maybe Big Hyeon (well, relatively speaking...you can definitely work with 6'0 though!) can make a splash.

I like his ballstriking a lot either way :)

Japanese athletes are small. Koreans are not.

I believe he trained in Bradenton at the IMG Academy so he's gotten some adequate coaching.

I'm confused, on the ATP website it says he's 4-2 in ATP matches. But everyone has been saying this is his first tourney?

This is his first main draw victory (and main draw participation). The other victories came in qualifying rounds.

I haven't seen Hyeon Chung play. What's his playstyle? Does he have weapons that could take him into say the top 20?

Just a solid baseliner with a big backhand. Not weapons necessarily but you could also say that about players like Djokovic, Nishikori or Murray.
Wonder how he'll develop in the following years. His forehand is a little fishy to me, but I'm sure he can make it solid after working on it.
He's got no visible weaknesses, so I'm very glad about that.

I watched videos of him from last year. He's got a wicked solid backhand, but his forehand and serve look like a liability. I suspect those two things will need to be fixed from a technical standpoint if he wants to be a top player.

Yeah, I agree with the opinions on with his serve and forehand.

But I think he has pretty solid 2nd serve, which is important.

And I don't know what happened to his forehand. He used to have smoother and more solid forehand 2 years ago.

I only watched part of the second set and agree with everyone in saying that he does have a solid backhand, but his forehand is very awkward looking and not as effective as it could be. Serve is alright, needs work but then again he is only 18 so plenty of upside. Too bad he didn't take that second set from Berdych after being up 4-1.

Just saw some brief highlights. He must have been doing something right to get up a break on Berdych.

However, his serve looks very awkward. I didn't see enough to determine how effective of a shot it actually is, but it looks like a less fluid version of Wawrinka's serve. The forehand is interesting looking too. Not a lot of shoulder turn but good pop.

He's still young, but I think he should rework the serve motion.

way he played today against Berdych, you can clearly see the Talent in him. He will be top 20 player, mark my words.....

He's into the finals at the Savannah Challenger, and he will officially break into the top 100 on Monday.

He's scheduled to play the Busan-Seoul hard court challenger duo in Korea next, which is a bit disappointing. I hope he'll start trying to qualify for more tour events soon.

We discussed his strategy on the "Teenage Talent" thread...it's paying off as he gained 110 points this week for his title run. Coric and Rublev both went down in the Rome qualifying. This was quite smart to take the trip back home and play to his current level. With another win in Seoul, he will approach the top 60 and eliminate the need to qualify through the summer NA HC swing.

Great news. Still only seen 2 matches from him but he's certainly been on form throughout the season, and still so young!
