Another 3-set win despite getting breadsticked in the second set.
SF vs #3 seed veteran Tatsuma Ito.
SF vs #3 seed veteran Tatsuma Ito.
He is on the list to qualify at USO. That conflicts with W-S dates.Chung gets the W over Ito in the semis of Chengdu Challenger - will face Sugita in the final. Hoping he takes the title and pushes on before playing the US Open. I've just been on the Winston Salem site and can't see his name down for qualies even, but these sites are often updated slowly, so maybe he will get a place or a WC into one of the draws. I presume he's aiming to play the US Open, but who knows, maybe he feels that's too great a step up so soon - we'll see, I guess!
That's interesting - so he's not WC worthy then, and doesn't have a PR of some kind? I guess they'd have already finalised their WCs previously. He is on the list to qualify at USO. That conflicts with W-S dates.
I see his name on the MD list at the Yokkachi and Vancouver Challengers this week and next week.
USO hoards their WCs for American players and the reciprocal arrangements with other slam hosts. That's interesting - so he's not WC worthy then, and doesn't have a PR of some kind? I guess they'd have already finalised their WCs previously.
Interesting - perhaps they're very keen on plenty of match practice pre-US Open? I think the Vancouver challenger will be a good opportunity to see how he fairs against some better players. Just looking at the Aptos field vs the challenger he's entered, I wish he was playing in Aptos simply because the entry field is basically the same as the tournament he's just won in Chengdu.USO hoards their WCs for American players and the reciprocal arrangements with other slam hosts.
As to a protected ranking, it kicks in if the player is unable to play for six consecutive months. For some reason Camp Chung decided Chengdu was important enough to play despite voiding the protective status just two weeks prior to the 6-month window.
He has to play Challengers due to the rankings drop and the stupid decision not to let the 6-month protected ranking kick in. Now he’ll play and probably either win the Challenger in Japan or tank before refueling in Vancouver along the way to Flushing for qualies at USO. I think the strategic tank in Yokkaichi is more in order. Three weeks in a row in very different time zones before qualifying and its extra three matches is purer stupidly than not waiting an extra two weeks to gain that PR status for the rest of 2019.I don’t want to see him playing challenger level tournaments anymore.
From the final, his strokes are too good to play challenger level.
Good thing was he had a game plan and tried to move his opponent then hitting winners instead of hitting to opponent over and over again and hoping for overpower opponent.
Both forehands and backhands were good but have not seen his serves so hope he improved his serves during his injury time. Also glad to see Goodwin was at the tournament.
Yes, almost six months to lumbar issues.I can't wait to see him play. I have really enjoyed watching him and his play style. He seems to really stick it to the other guy and it's really good to see when I don't like who he is playing! He's a beast when he is on. Why was he out for so long? Bad back?
..aaand he pulls outYes, almost six months to lumbar issues.
You can watch him the rest of this tournament and next week in Vancouver. ATP streams matches at Challenger level for free at their website.
I imagine it's either precautionary or simply he's tired from playing so many matches in a row, so some rest and getting to Vancouver early would do him a lot of good. I'm really hoping that is the case and not a flaring up of the injury that's kept him out of action for most of the year...aaand he pulls out

Chung coming back big time... about to make a minc emeat out of Canadian pride Popisil

1set don't count. Chung wasn't ready or warm yet. Same thing happened to me in the playoff match1 set all after getting breadsticked in the first set.
Vasek playing in front of a home city crowd is a dangerous commodity. 6-1 6-7(8). How many MPs did Chung save?
Has to qualify first. That would be a lot of tennis coming off a six-month injury layoff. He won a Challenger two weeks ago and then withdrew after a couple of matches last week. He’s not lasting 10 matches at USO.Chung is BACK,,, be afraid,,,, be very afraid.................................... Chung party tonight... will be dark horse at the US open

Good and bad.
Positive thing was...his serves are slightly better but might need more leg action???
Negative thing was... he still hit so many balls to opponent. Pop. only moved one or two steps to chung’s balls.
Yesterday match was good example. Opponent was slow and why Chung kept hitting to him. If he moves him about four steps, mostly he can win points.
Best point for the match was one of two match points. He was down 5-6 during the tiebreake.
He moved Pop. side to side then won the point.
How did that work out tonight? Spanked by a top 195er, 4&2.
don't worry. small setback. you are looking at the future US open champHow did that work out tonight? Spanked by a top 195er, 4&2.
Yes, o great seer of the future!don't worry. small setback. you are looking at the future US open champ
Opponent wracked balls and all the balls were in.How did that work out tonight? Spanked by a top 195er, 4&2.
this is easy win against erratic athletic swede. Chung is way too experienced and way too consistentChung won again in straight sets.
He will play Swede Mikael Ymer (#9) for the MD slot from their pod.

Well done Hyeon, but this match was abysmal. Not great quality at all, even if Sandgren really put a fight considering his weaknesses
He would need to up his game for the SF, otherwise Federer will crush him
Chung is now dark horse to win it all. it is time to finish the job that he started at AOYeah, Hyeon Chung is back.
