Everybody Hyeon Chung Tonight!

I thought that match will be straight set match from Verdasco so I did not watch.
Very surprised that he won the match again.
Probably too tired for next match. Nothing was easy for him......
He is Asian Zverev...two 5-setters in a row!

A day off should be enough to regain stamina. I’m more concerned about his style not matching up with what typically troubles The Nadal. The big serve to get cheaper points does not exist.

It will be all about his strategy. If he plays too far from baseline and hitting directly to Nadal, Chung will be the one who gets tired very quickly. Move Nadal as much as possible and hitting aggressively.
Nadal is a different player but at least he played the long match with lefty so playing another lefty might not be uncomfortable. First set will be key. If he plays badly in the first set, probably Nadal will fly from there.

The similarities between The Nadal and Verdasco end at them being both Spanish and lefties. 3R lefty won’t allow Chung to be as aggressive due to his high RPM groundstrokes. Chung’s service games will tap him out more because his serve isn’t strong enough to earn many cheap points. I fear this will be ugly.

Unlikely Federer, At least, he can equally play in both sides decently hahaha.
I just watched his last point and that was good strategical point. He moved Verdasco and aggressively hit side to side.
Bit concerning that he was too far from baseline. If he plays like that with Nadal, he will be pushed more because of Nadal’s super high spinny balls........

Another Chung sighting, this time at the Chengdu Open 250. He'll be facing off against Joao Sousa of Portugal in the opening round, with the winner facing #2 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the R16.

Chung loses in his first match since a single challenger match this spring, only his second match of the year.

He lost to Zdenek Kolar 3-6 1-6.

I'm just content that he played a match again. I've seen some videos of him practicing and none of it was on clay. So not surprised that he lost that badly on a clay court. Also looked up his opponent and that guy isn't an amateur either. We can only judge him when (and if) he plays a full streak of tournaments during multiple months so he can get a chance to get some match rhythm without getting injured in that stretch.

It seems like he has recently started practicing again. He posted a video of his indoor practice, followed by two pics showing nasty blisters on his fingers.

I wonder if he has PR (protected ranking) since he was out because of his back. His last match was in 2020 FO qualies.

Sadly the seemingly best recent example of resurgence is Mannarino.

I know some will sight Delpo but he was flat out better than Chung and injured his left hand while maintaining his biggest weapon. Chung is broken.

Sadly? Winning a title after wrecking his knee a year ago on Centre Court vs fedr is a feel good story. He’s now left Felix alone in the cellar of finals futility for active players by getting that second title Saturday. 2-9 is >>> than 1-10 and >> than Felix’s 1-9

Fair enough just that Chung was expected to compete for Slams at one point.

Speaking of hyeon chung, a similar sounding name…..in the spirit of the theardtitle from the eighties hit….
I also like wang qiang. Lost to mertens last night, but she played well in the second set.

Hyeon Chung is reportedly (according to an Italian and a Spanish site) playing doubles in the ATP 250 Seoul. The current acceptance list doesn't show his name in the doubles list. He'll probably be entered as WC when the doubles MD is released.

In October he will supposedly start playing Challenger again.

I think he's on his way back to top 10. I think he could win the Australian open 2023, possibly upset Novak there.

Ya I mean 4 years is a long time and not so long depending on how you slice it.

Some historical reference would be Tommy Haas coming back twice from extended injury breaks to make deep Slam runs and Delpo.

Meanwhile, we are able to Yung-Seong Chung tonight, playing 1R vs his much higher ranked countryman Kwon after qualifying. He has lost the first set in a TB and is on serve midway through the second set.

I wonder if Hyeon Chung has developed new tactics and methods for protecting his low back and his feet (which were torn up badly in his 2020 matches)? Can he close out matches faster? Will he take more chances to capitalize on his openings?
2020? That was the year he played just 6 matches due to Covid-19 canceling half a year of the ATP schedule. When play resumed, Chung tried to play on his weakest surface, red clay. Poor results and that was the last of his activity on the tour.

Most of his injury history occurred in 2019 and before, taking the longest breaks to rehab in spring/early summer 2018 and then 5 months off beginning in February 2019.

I stand corrected. But whether it was 2020 or 2019, Hyeon Chung was a grinder whose style was causing some serious injuries. Can he adapt and develop new weapons to take him further?

Too early to tell since it's his 1st match after 2 years but he still has 1. No confidence near net, 2. too conservative serve returns...

Well whatever happens, he's managed to outlast Giangi Quinzi, the man who beat him in that momentous Wimbledon junior final.

(notably, the blisters already creeping in...)

He won the final 6-1 6-2! That's a pretty good result, even if it's just a futures.
Yes, it's still an amazing win, even if it's only ITF M25 level considering how long he took time off.

Also, amazing how much of a ranking boost a "mere" +25 ATP points are worth - it bumped him up 325 positions to #725, winning approximately a measly $3600. It's tough to be a Pro till you make it to maybe around top-100. Below that, their earnings often look just like a working class office worker, or even lower.

Yeah me too. Too bad Van Rijthoven had such a bad start in the AO qualies.
Here's hoping he's back at his best for Wimbledon. I think he's only ever going to be a factor on grass and there aren't enough specialist grass court players on tour so it's always way more interesting when there are these types of players who can trip up the top 10-20 at Wimbledon.
