Everybody Hyeon Chung Tonight!

He is on an eight-match winning streak in the little league M15 Tsukuba. Next is against seed #1 in SF. Loong way to go to make it back up the rank. M15 is only worth 10pts, winning it will move his rank about 30+.

He may no longer have a protected ranking as it has passed the max 12 months after his comeback.

In an alternative universe Chung inspired his gen to greater heights.

Looks as though he won the title. A long way to go if he wants to make it back to the top 100 (say). A shame because he looked exciting once upon a time.

Yup loong way to go. Looks like he withdrew from another M15 Kashiwa (JPN), probably because he went deep ("won") the M15 Tsukuba.

Need a few WC to low level ATP 250 or to Challenger to get up there faster. He's 28, still has some time, but not much. We'll see ...

and that is assuming he stays healthy and doesn't get another (big) injury. I feel like he can reach the top 50 if he stays healthy and gets to train and play matches without constantly worrying about all these injuries, but that's a big "if".

Has he fixed his serve? It was a disaster after the back injury the last time I saw it. No one is getting into the too 100 with a serve like that. Only exception may be Brooksby. I do wish him the best though. I remember that he could play well on clay too.

He just won another future! I know it's far from being back, but winning two tournaments in a row is definitely a good sign. He's opted out of playing in Japan to take some rest.

Holy Smokes,,, Heung coming back Big time now,, could be a darkhorse to win the US open this year at this rate of improvement. Total beatdown of decent player Saitoh at the Little rock challenger in USA

Back in action in Wuxi qualifying this week. He's seemingly back to playing a pretty full schedule. The long march back to the top will take some time and may not happen, but it's good to see him getting this many reps in.
and his serve seems to be getting bigger and bigger,, he couldn't serve normal at all after his injury recovery,, but now, it seems to be getting kind of closer to normal serve

Unfortunately lost a couple of challenger matches after that and in his last match he looked like he had injured himself again...

Surprisingly he managed to win the first set serving as if the “you must keep one foot on the ground” serve rule was still in effect.

Not sure if it was his knees bothering him or what, because his movement was still decent for a lot of the match.

Looking less and less likely that he'll be able to make a comeback. Lost in R1 as WC against #161 Coleman Wong in Seoul Challenger with a rather convincing score 6-3, 6-2.

I haven't watched the highlights of the match against Wong yet, but his serve and forehand look so.. lackluster lately (that's putting it nicely). Basically every part of his game has gone down a couple of notches compared to how it used to be. He used to be incredibly quick and had an amazing backhand. In his prime, his backhand was better than his forehand but the forehand still wasn't bad. He could do damage with it. His serve was always his weak part (mainly hampered by back injuries), but he could still use it to gain the upper hand in the rallies. Now his movement seems similar to other challenger players, his backhand is fine but not amazing, but his forehand and serve are outright terrible. I just cringe whenever he hits one of those shots. I'm just wondering what he's working on during practice. If he's not injured now, and he can practice normally, then he should be able to at least get closer to his previous level, right? It's not like he's past 40 or something.

Edit: Just watched the highlights. He didn't look as bad as I expected from seeing the scoreline. Just hope he can stay healthy for a longer period and get some consistency in there.

To be fair, I’ve watched probably 3 of Wong’s matches and he’s a tough opponent. Think his ranking is trending upward and will be a regular on the atp tour soon so it sucks Chung had to play him in a challenger.

Perhaps there should be a thread of 'forgotten players', i.e. currently active players who at one point looked like they were going to have a great, long career, but who for one reason or another disappeared in obscurity and never really managed to find their way back.

Besides Chung I am thinking of: Edmund, Coric, maybe Maxime Cressy.

Save a spot for Eubanks, but at least he can fall back on his commentary career.

Hyeon has had major lumbar issues if I recall and that messes up your serve, your movement and the twisting/turning you have to make when in a rally.

The fact he's playing Professional tennis at a high standard is a victory in itself.

Maybe, but I don't recall Eubanks as ever being considered a great prospect, even after his surprise QF.
More thinking of e.g. Janowicz, though he's retired now AFAIK.
I mean you're talking about Cressy and Edmund, do you think there's miles between those guys and Eubanks ?

Edmund yes. Cressy you may have a point though. Somehow in my memory I thought Cressy was expected to be quite successful, but maybe I'm thinking of somebody else.

ANyway, don't want to pollute this topic further.

Edmund, Cressy, and Wolf have all had career derailing injuries. Cressy said in July his back had been hurting him for over a year and he’d just been playing through the pain. He’s going to take an extended break to see if he can get close to 100% healthy. At which point I assume he’ll resume training and try to make one more push at the pro level before hanging it up for good.

yup, had to look JJ up. apparently, some kind of shoulder injury that he had a surgery for. hopefully, we'll still see him around in the future.

Chung just beat Ryan Peniston in straights 6-4 6-4 in round 1 of the Phan Thiet challenger tournament, after winning two matches to qualify for the main draw. This doesn't sound like much, but it's actually a great improvement since he's had trouble winning two matches in a row for the last couple of.. well, years. At the end of last year he was losing far more matches than he won, all in Challenger qualies, so not too great for a former Grand Slam semi-finalist. Other than his results, his game is clearly improving as well (as far as I can judge by watching the highlights). He used to hit so many UEs and he's really cutting back on those.

So after I've posted this, he lost in the next round after being triple MP up on 7-6 5-2 40-0...
