Everyone's Getting on the Halep Bandwagon

I'm torn because I'm glad my favorite WTA player's greatness is being found out, but then again I feel like I discovered her and made her who she is. It's like a sports agent finding a star basketball player at a young age and then he signs with someone else once he gets drafted!

When I first saw her, standing at most 5'6, 130lbs just bullying bigger opponents I knew that she would become the legend that she is today. It reminded me of the villain in Bloodsport, how he is compact and small, but just cuts through the whole field with ease.

Simona Halep is the future. She destroy all woman.

Hmm She is a good player but many of you scare me with your obsession and what you feel is some type of personal relationship with these players. You didn't have anything to do with her success.

DimitrovTheGoat....you are sounding like an obsessed stalker type of weirdo fan. I hope you are taking meds for your problem.

She appears to be steady on her journey as one of the top players, but I agree that some are investing far too much in her-as thought she's going to have a Serena-like run of winning majors titles.

Others are obsessing on her physical traits, mixed with lionizing her as the future of tennis. She's yet to prove that, so all of the uncomfortable overestimation of all things Halep is unfortunate.

Allow her to develop and progress naturally.

That's simply not going to happen. Her game isn't big enough.

Compact body, consistent hitting, great power for her size, nice small size 4 women's feet to scurry around for great court coverage like a chipmunk, and then beautiful looks, but the looks that the entire ATP Top 500 wouldn't go for so she will never be distracted by men.

So perfect... so perfect... *pets kitten*

This x 1000%.

All these obsessive fans with their cutesy nicknames for every player - is that some sort of lame Euro soccer fan thing where the sport isn't interesting enough to watch, they've got to invent names and imagined personality traits for their heroes? Other than with just a very few super famous types like Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod), American sports fans resist the urge to try to get cute and pseudo-clever, in a chic tabloid journalistic fashion (e.g. J-Lo) with the athletes we watch and admire.

Guess what? Calling the objects of your obsession "Rafa!," "Nole," "Muzz," "Masha," etc... doesn't make you cool, knowledgeable, trendy, avant guarde, someone-on-the-rise, a real winner or, as you most desire (and undoubtedly fantasize about on a daily basis), a personal friend of the player. It makes you look like a rather childish fanboi or fangurrl, nothing else.

Unfortunately, she will not get past Serena today. She needs to develop power play or else she will be limiting herself to quarters and semis.

Halep reminds me quite a lot of Nole, although she doesn't slide about like a mad woman and her serve is kind of lame.

You had nothing to do with her at all. No input, you did not make her.

Not joining this bandwagon....I know she will win slams but I am not a fan.

I think Halep is great, perhaps not saying much but she is my fave female player at the moment, and no I had no input into her rise up the tennis rankings nor do I have a cutey nickname for her. She is kind of cute though :)

is it just me or does her running forehand remind you of Sampras...

Fans who aggressively nickname are trying to turn tennis back to its pop cultural high point--the "tennis boom" where (for a couple of examples), McEnroe was "superbrat" "Mac" or "Johnny Mac" (among other names), Connors was "Jimbo", along with other nicknames to follow. They want certain players of the 2000s to capture that transcending personality, but it is not there on the level where the average person even sees players as personalized (for the public) figures.

There's a wealth of evidence of that behavior on this board.

I didn't know this sentiment existed in sports. I thought it was reserved for junior high kids and their favorite punk rock bands. Why wouldn't you want her to succeed? She's been winning like a madwoman the last 18-24 months and has grown her fan base accordingly

Halep for life

Unlike anyone else on this board, I can take credit for using Simona Halep to make the world a better place, at least for one human being.

Last summer I was at an amusement park and, as is the case with so many summertime tourist industry attractions, the area had a larger requirement for basic service jobs than could be filled from the ranks of local teenagers or adults willing to work for low wages, so as has been the case for quite some years, they recruit foreign college kids. Employees at the park had their place of origin on their nametags, and amongst tags stating "Ball State University" and "Southern Illinois University" were plenty saying "Kiev, Ukraine," "Moscow, Russia," "Prague, Czech Republic," and "Taipei, Taiwan."

However the whole day, I saw only one tag from Romania and this young woman from Bucharest looked to be so depressed as to be in pain. As I was paying for my kid's snack, I asked "Say, are you a fan of Simona Halep?" and her face suddenly lit up more so than even with a small child when told his lost puppy has just been found. She had almost a look of wonder and asked how I had heard of her. I told her Halep was one of my very favorite tennis players and I loved watching how hard she plays every point, never giving up even against bigger, stronger players. She said "In Romania, EVERYONE knows Simona - she is our hero!"

We chatted for a few more minutes about Halep and her meteoric rise and then this young lady became depressed again, exclaiming, "Simona and I, we are the same age and she is famous and one of the best in the world, but I have gone to college only to serve ice cream!" I then told her what she had been doing all summer was mastering conversational English well beyond the level of fluency, that she did not even have that much of an accent any more, and out of all her co-workers from foreign countries we had met that day, her English was by far the best. She looked at my suspiciously at first thinking I was just trying to flatter her, but I was being 100% honest with her (she really did speak extremely fluently) and I think she realized it, recognized then that she was doing something worthwhile for her future that summer, and then smiled a grateful thanks to me. I think our 5-minute chat elevated the emotional state of a very sad, homesick young woman at least 6 or 7 points on a 10-point emotional scale.

So some of you can try to take credit for Halep's success - good luck articulating an explanation for how that works. But, lo, only I can rightfully claim that I have harnessed the power of Simona Halep for good in this world.... Errr, at least amongst those posting here on Talk Tennis....
