Excited for Australian Open 2024

New year, new storylines.

We have a new age of tennis players coming up. Lead by Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz has missed Australian Open in 2023 due to injury but now is in Australia. With USOpen and Wimbledon glory by age 20, who knows if Alcaraz will be one step closer of CGS by end of this month.

Then we have Janick Sinner, who admittedly has been on increasingly successful trajectory. He has also arrived. Ready to go.

Holger Rune is adding more people in his coaching box and is raring to go. Finalist in the last tournament, he is looking ready.

There are more usual suspects like Medvedev and Zverev. But all are lead by the world number 1 and greatest Australian Open champion.

Australia is all about starting strong. Those who win big here can rest on their laurels for majority of the year, like Tsitsipas last year. With high competition between youngsters, this is going to be start to a great campaign.

This AO is going to be crazy. Djokovic has his hands full, he is the favorite, but he is no where close to being a lock this time round. I expect fire from Alcaraz, Sinner and the rest.

Tennis is in good hands and the excitement factor is very high. (y)

Alcaraz, Sinner, Rune, and the like are the story for the season for sure. These new players at the end of the Fedal era are where the excitement is at!

If Djokovic is healthy, it will be a fun tournament to see how he does against the young guns after battering them all of last year except the Wimbledon choke. If his wrist impedes him, the interest level goes down considerably with Nadal being out also.

Alcaraz is the only one capable of sublime tennis otherwise to make it special on his own. The rest of the contenders are good professionals, but hardly the type to evoke awe.

I wanted at least a Nole-Rafa battle but now it will probably be a Sinner - Medvedev snooze fest in the final. Injuries are more the problem for the Goats not the young guns.

This feels like Magnus Carlsen vs. the rest in chess. If he performs at his normal level, he wins without big problems.
Expecting the same here. He even won the last two titles with injuries...

That said, AO is always fun after the draught and I expect to see some great matches.

Still a lock in reality OMEGALUL. Even in bo3 Sinner couldn't help but get destroyed in straights when it mattered in ATP final, none of the matches Sinner won were very important like that one. So bo5 at AO is hopeless when he already has shown no ability to break thru at any grand slam. Alcaraz has been so weak... again hopeless in bo5 at AO of all places... theres no one to beat Djokovic unless he just doesnt play well

Novak is still the favorite number 1 but the younger have higher chances now imo, But yeah, Novak has an aura in Melbourne .

I’m excited for it, but felt a huge deflation after Rafa's withdrawal. I was super excited before that, especially after seeing how great Rafa was playing. Anyway, having recovered my equilibrium now, I'll definitely be interested in watching and seeing who is playing like winners, who might have a chance of beating Djokovic, who is showing real stamina in BO5 now since that's been an issue for certain players, and who is showing real improvement. Medvedev, Sinner, Alcaraz, Tsitsipas, Rune, Fritz, Zverev - these are some (not all) of the people I want to watch. On the women's side, Rybakina is my favorite and I want to see keen competition. Hope Kenin and some others have a good tournament. If Djokovic's wrist/arm is okay, I know how tough he will be to beat, but not impossible at all, I don't think. Let's all enjoy!

It's nice to have true tennis fans.

Will Craig Tiley ensure Joker has a favorable run at another title by letting him play all his matches in the cool of the night [the same time the final will be played] while all the other contenders have to play during the heat of the day.

It feels like this may be Sinners time. The AO has oftentimes had interesting results and hasn’t always been dominated by the favorites.

I’m excited but also bracing for another dud. It feels like we should get a strong second week, based on how the top players have been playing – Alcaraz is actually here this year, Medvedev is coming in off the back of a much better season than last year, Sinner leveled up recently, etc. – but we’ve had so few genuinely close and exciting matches at the business end of slams lately, it’s a little hard to have too much belief. I don’t mind if Novak wins again but I hope people are at least capable of pushing him this year. Another straight-sets second week will be a snooze fest.

Going back 20 years, not just 5. Cilic, Thiem, Greek philosopher all recent finalists. Stan won it, Tsonga a finalist. Safin, Baghdatis, Gonzalez. Point is it’s an opportunity for some bc not everyone is healthy in January.

Can't wait for this year's AO. Ten AO's is already amazing but Djokovic wants that 11th AO for his 25th slam. Having the most slams and surpassing Margaret Court in her home country would be something else.

Is Margaret Court brave enough to hand over the trophy to Djokovic and get a relentless amount of boos?

Does Djokovic believe in God or Satan?
:cautious:

unless anyone can maintain the level at the fifth set, no one can defeat a healthy djoker at this AO

Agreed, the excitement is happening when the new players buckled under the weight of Goatkovic era.

If alcaraz wins i think he could go on and do the golden calendar slam. Conditions are not great for him but if he pulls this out i think he will make history.
Sinner wont win but will be a nightmare draw before the final. Too soon for rune. Djokovic i think will go out early, i.e before the final and nobody else is a factor. However need to see the draw first, just got a feeling sinner may end up in djokovics half.

I'm excited for the Australian Open because I'm excited for Arthur Fils...

2024-mens-asb-classic-day-2.jpg

He's French, so he's probably only going to have a so-so career. But he has me actually excited about watching tennis again for the first time in awhile.

If he hit a one-handed backhand I would be absolutely in love with him. But he hits a two-hander so I only like him so much. :giggle:

As for the top guys: I can't stand Djokovic so I hope he doesn't win. And Alcaraz, Sinner, Rune... any of them, I don't care. If any of them win it's fine with me.

I have no rooting interest among any of those guys.

Anyway, I hope Arthur Fils has a good Australian Open. And I hope he has an even better French. Because if he wins just a round or two at Roland-Garros it's going to be wild. The French fans will absolutely lose their minds.

Why would she get boos from Aussies of all people? If Americans don't boo Serena, don't see why Australians would act different with their biggest female tennis legend.

cant wait for murrays 5 hour 5 setter marathons again this year if hes able to win some rounds lol. kokkinakis vs murray last yr was epic

Meanwhile, Diego Schwartzman lost in the first round of the qualifying to the main tableau...

Will his hot GF tolerate this from tiny lion?

Tsitsipas is defending 1200 pts out of his 4000 here. If he is to reach quarters or semis, he should remain in the top 10. If he is out earlier still there are chances he remains in the top 10.

He is not as hopeless as Ruud whose ranking depends solely on RG finals.

Djokovic looks vulnerable to me. He's 8-3 in his last 3 tournaments after going 31-1 from RG to Paris. It would be a tough ask for him to go through Dimitrov, Rune, Sinner and Alcaraz in a row.

Let's give context first.

Djokovic after USOpen took extended break. And came back and despite not playing his best, won Paris masters.

In ATP finals he was already near his year end, but had 1 task only to win year end number 1. He beat rune and won it.

Then a match where Djokovic won more pts, he barely lost to sinner. The first set at 4-4 Djokovic played one of the shaky games and sinner went 1 set up. From there onwards they were very even. 1 bad game won't dictate his fate in BO5.

Still he won sf and final in dominant fashion. 3 2 3 3.

Now davis cup was another tough battle in Italy in a court similar to ATP finals court. Djokovic squandered match points to lose that match.

In united cup he is carrying some niggle.

But all in all post USOpen Djokovic won a masters and ATP finals while losing a rr match, DC and united cup.
