Fact or Fiction: In League Play(Ex:USTA) Men are Atleast a ***k # Rating Ahead...

What I want to know is why so many men care if they can beat a woman in tennis. Does it do something for fragile male egos to declare, "I'm a 3.5 man, and I could beat a 4.0 woman in singles"?
I always thought the value of USTA ratings was to give you a tool to look for reasonably good matchups... so it might be helpful to a 3.5 man to know how his progress against his 4.0 woman hitting partner (or vice versa) would translate to playing against other men (or women).

Why is it circus tennis? Ratings are an arbitrary number. Tencap just creates a different set of arbitrary numbers, you could do the same thing with NTRP if you combined the mens and womens divisions and re-rated everyone.

I went overboard with that comment.....scratch that.

Alot may like that system......I .....personally havent heard much about it, nor have participated in it......and just mean to say that I may not like it. Its like a handicap in golf or bowling........

From what I've seen in the mixed leagues is that normally it's around a 1.0 difference. 4.5 woman can match up to 3.5 men with the women winning more often then not, but 4.0 and 4.5 are very competitive with the 4.0 man winning more often then not. :)

In basketball good jr college teams can beat pro women's teams. Tennis is more of a skill sport than basketball so women can compete at a higher level

Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, and Victoria Azarenka are 7.0 women tennis players---top of the scale. Do you SERIOUSLY mean to imply they could be competitive with Rafa, Roger, and Novak---7.0 male tennis players??? LOL. Please. Yes, tennis is a skill sport, but power and speed and quickness and athleticism still play a huge factor in success.

of course they couldn't.

however serena is probably in the top 2000 tennis players in the world currently.

candace parker or diana taurasi or maya moore (whoever the best womens basketball player is) is probably not 1 of the best million basketball players in the world. that is a rather significant difference.

And, of course in golf the difference in ability of men and women is even closer than in tennis. It would seem that there really wouldn't be any difference in billiards, but they do have different competitions for men and women.

A man should almost always beat a woman of .5 higher NTRP rating, at least at the mid to higher end of the scale (2.5 man may not beat a 3.0 woman). A 1 point difference will depend on the matchup, with the woman predominately winning unless it is a particularly bad matchup. Getting to the top end, where everyone has all the tools, a 6.0 man would be beating many 7.0 women.
