American actor Robert Duvall has died, his wife Luciana announced on Facebook. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, surrounded by his family, at his ranch. Duvall won an Oscar for leading role in Tender Mercies. His most famous role was as lawyer Tom Hagen in the iconic movies The Godfather & The Godfather Part II. He also starred in other famous films such as Apocalypse Now, Deep Impact, Falling Down, John Q, The Judge, Phenomenon, Secondhand Lions, Open Range and in many others.

Rest in peace, legend.

From Wikipedia,

"Duvall won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as an alcoholic former country music star in Tender Mercies (1983). His other Oscar-nominated roles included The Godfather (1972), Apocalypse Now (1979), The Great Santini (1979), The Apostle (1997), A Civil Action (1998), and The Judge (2014)."

He starred in several notable Westerns, such as Lonesome Dove, Open Range, Broken Trail, which defined a realistic view of the old West. Both Open Range and Broken Trail were filmed near Calgary, Alberta, Canada. First Nations rituals were undertaken prior to filming.

He was a regular in my area, frequenting the local coffee shops, restaurants, and a local "fun" club tournament between 3 clubs in the region that was held annually. I didn't know him, but many people I played with 20+ years ago did, referring to him as "Bobby".

One year I was the "sacrificial lamb" to play singles vs a ringer one club would fly in (hence the quote around 'fun'). It was mid-June, and hot as hell. I was standing on the deck outside the club right next a huge fan trying to cool down after a valiant 2 & 2 loss. Two guys were talking, and I recognized one of the voices. Turned around, and Robert Duvall was right behind me. He looked at me (as I stood there, dripping in sweat), I simply nodded, he nodded back, and I turned around to continue cooling down.

I figured the last thing he wanted was some random sweaty guy telling him how much he enjoyed his movies. The guy just wanted to be left alone & enjoy the tennis.

Dying at 95 proves he was putting off an ever-lasting life as long as possible.

He was human, all-too-human, and humans prioritise the self over the transcendental.

Duvall was avowedly a committed Christian.
He was nominated for the Oscar for this film.

Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and other well-known actors and filmmakers paid tribute to the late Duvall.

Pacino:
“It was an honor to have worked with Robert Duvall. He was a born actor as they say, his connection with it, his understanding and his phenomenal gift will always be remembered. I will miss him.”

De Niro:
“God bless Bobby. i hope i can live till i’m 95. May he Rest in Peace.”
