famous criers (cryers)

big ted

Legend
i read that djokovic was in tears today at the presentation, and i also remember that federer cried after nadal beat him at 2009AO. what other players have cried from losing a GS final? i think i remember hearing nadal did but it was in the locker room, not sure if it was W or AO.. does anyone know who else?

btw theres nothing wrong with it i just thought it was interesting because in the older days players were more likely to destroy a locker room than cry

Murray brokedown twice in his last two slam finals against Federer. Could have sworn I saw a tear when Roddick won the US Open and of course the solitary Hollywood tear of Federer in Wimbledon 2014

The only ones that I remember is Murray at AO 2010 and Wimbledon 2012, Federer at AO2009

That's right. After losing the 2010 AO final to Federer, Murray made his famous comment: "I can cry like Roger, shame I can't play like him!"

Yeah, somehow I can't imagine Pancho Gonzalez crying...

yea i dont think i remember anyone crying from losing a GS final before the federer era but not really sure... players probably feel these GS tournaments are more important than the past players because they are the holy grail now and will be used to determine their legacy in tennis history

It was an interesting moment for Novak. He cried because the crowd gave him an incredible and sustained standing ovation. He has never had crown support, even in this final it was all for Stan. Then when he took the runners up trophy the crowd just went nuts for him. I think he felt very moved by this gesture, it was a great moment.

I'll never forget Jana Novotna openly broken ly sobbing on the Duchess of Kent ' s shoulder while the Duchess comforted her after she choked away a Wimbledon final to Graf. Such a break from stiff British formality.

I have an important suggestion to make to ATP.

In every trophy ceremony, when they give flowers, teddy bears or some of that useless junk they always give to the guy who lost in the final, stadium's sound system should play this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEkIou3WFnM

That would make tennis SO MUCH better.

Damn, I would watch every single final for that single moment.

Yes....Novotna....

That was a....touching moment. For a woman who probably believed she had just choked her only chance....(and yes...sexism involved - see it as more acceptable for a woman)

Contrast that with Fed crying on Laver....oh...man......(see my post about it in the thread about Novak crying for the same reason....lol)

I suppose that's a bit more sympathetic than this.

Just my theory, but I think it has to do with the higher pressure in today's game. Obviously the game is larger and more popular across the globe today, and more people are watching. Tennis isn't a team sport where a couple of people can get blamed for a loss. When you lose, everyone's eyes are directly on you, no one else.

Additionally, it's not a coincidence that the Big 4's crying instances have come after repetitive tough moments. Murray 2010 he had lost second time in a row to Federer, pressure started to build up. 2012, now 0-4 in GS Finals , lost on his own surface. Nadal 2007, lost in a close 5-setter to Federer on grass, must have felt devastated at coming that close, also lost to him the year before. Federer 2009, his third straight loss to Nadal in GS Finals, including 2nd 5 setter. Djokovic last year, another loss to Nadal, and than this year, finally a chance, but another less yet again.

I think Melissa Manchester's "Don't cry out loud" is more appropriate.:)

don't cry out loud
just keep it inside
learn how to hide your feelings
fly high and proud
and if you should fall
remember you almost had it all

ITs good that Djokovic cried isnt it ? Now he will definitely win the FO 2016. Precedence ? Fed winning AO 2010 after crying in 2009. Murray winning W2013 after "trying and crying" in 2012, NAdal crying (in the locker room) afte W2007 and winning W2008. So to all the Djoker fans, its a good omen. It may actually be a cathartic experience, so the FEAR of losing a final is gone.

He cried las year as well. If he cries next year, let's hope he'll win in 2017.

I'm glad he did it in the locker room and didn't ruin Fed's moment at the trophy presentation. That would have been rude to Roger..:)

If only Ralph had done the same during his AO14 loss to Stan and not ruined his moment with his Oscar winning performance.:)
