Fashion Question: Ladies Attire

One Old Fart has a question for your Generataion X and Y kids: I'd like to know...

1 - Your Gender?
2 - Your Age Range?
3 - If you think the current "fashion" for young women is actually ... attractive? (The Low-Rise-Jeans-combined-with-a-top-which-stops-an-inch-or-two- above-the jeans ... which seems to accentuate the "Baby Fat" roll on so many girls between the ages of 14 and 24.)

Personally, I dont' get this. (But 8-of-10 young girls are wearing these clothes.)

I equate this with a bunch of us 40-60 year-old men suddenly wearing Tube Tops to show-off our bellies. How can this be so popular? (Serious question....)

KK, I'm female, and a late teen. I find low rise jeans to be quite comfortable. I mean not the super low, you sit and your crack shows, but the ones about 4 inches below the navel. It's attractive with a shorter shirt granted you don't have baby fat. Many don't, some do. Those who do, should come to the realization that their belly rings don't look good on the thousands of lipids swimming in their midsection.

Who is it, in your opinion, attractive on?

no belly rolls...thumbs up(I don't mind seeing a toned stomach)
belly rolls...thumbs down

truth hurts

there's an entirely different scale for Hobbits...but I don't really know it for male Hobbits. I'm not a switch hitter!

A relative of mine, who is close to the streets and vibe of the NYC fashion culture, assures me that the young women of today are comfortable and confident with their bodies the way they are. No hang-ups about weight or appearance (obviously). So, they don't mind their ugly a*s flab hanging out, or showing off a naval ring or that ugly a*: small-of-the-back (or just above the butt crack) tatoo that every other 20-something is sporting these days. My answer: "Nice spin, but fat is fat-when has it EVER been stylish."

In Japan these fashions have just caught on (Japan is 2 or 3 seasons behind New York), and here, the women who wear these pants HAVE no butts or hips, so the effecdt is a bit different-sort of like hanging your pants on a coat hanger or that stationery bike that you never use. Still, it's better than the jiggly Jabba the Hut types, showing more than anyone needs to see.

Good question, Meg. As a "student of the femal form" ... I have an opinion.

Of the (relatively fit) women I see ... at my health club ... on the tennis courts ... on the Mtn Bike trails ... I'd say roughly 5-8% of *these* women look good in the attire in question. My problem is ... something like 60% - 70% of these women wear these clothes. Therefore, I conclude 55% - 65% of these relatively fit women are ... silly ... ignorant ... or just plain nuts.

(I don't care to attempt to extrapolate these numbers to fit the general population of women. "Ugh!")

To more specifically answer your question, here are some WTA examples:

Would Look Good With This Garb:
Meghann Shaughnessy - Surely has the "hard body" to pull it off.
Martina Hingis - She could do it, too.
Chanda Rubin - Doesn't ... but could.
Vera Zvonareva - Seems pretty fit.
Nathalie Dechy - Could also ... but usually doesn't.

Would/Does Look Ridiculous With This Garb:
Tatiana Golovin - She must believe her Fat Roll is ... becoming????
Jennifer Capriatti - Goes without saying.
Alicia Molik - Good player! Smart enough to avoid that look.
Etc....

Karl, I'm a 28 year old male. I know the style you're talking about. I've been watching it walk by me for the last 5 or 6 years. IMO, it's really tired. It's not offensive to me, but I'd rather see it only on girls under 20.

Even so, Meghann Shaughnessy better not call KK's kid, cuz KK won't let him talk to her....

hahah...sorry, I just found that other thread too funny.

By the way, our club has this almost 40 lady with a flat chest, stomach rolls, and a big bottom that insists on wearing a tight skirt/shorts and a sports bra only. What a horrid sight! She must have a magic mirror!

a lot of ppl think their bodies look 10X than they really do. there is this huge black chick thats about 200 lbs and she would sit at the lunch table and 1/3 of her arse crack would be showing. i mean, gosh wearing less revealing clothing when u are BUTT UGLY, literally. a lot of ppl have TOO much self-esteem for their own good. so full of themselves.

"Ha! Ha!" Very funny. Actually Shaughnessy's not even one year older than my son. (IOW, he's an adult. So is she. He makes his own decisions now.) If she's still available, I'd love to have a daughter-in-law how can hit the ball like that(!). Isn't she married...?

But ten or twelve years ago...? Watch out, Meghann!!!

That's really sad. Reminds me of some Speaker I heard at a health conference a few years ago. He said, "Men -- no matter their reality -- get out of the shower, look in the mirror, and see "Arnold Schwarzenegger." Women -- no matter how gorgeous they are -- get out of the shower, look in the mirror, and see "Rosanne Barr."

The woman in your club must be ... broken.

I'm thinking these ladies (or young women) dress that way because they really don't care what you think. When was the last time any guy looked at his outfit and said, "Yep, I'm wearing this for the older leering ladies."

Wow! How many false assuptions can you cram into one brief post?

cak said:

You missed my point. I'd like them to dress in a way which demonstrates self respect. Their fat rolls are not becoming ... not just to me. For them. Have you even noticed the number of posters who express agreement with my position?
When was the last time any guy looked at his outfit and said, "Yep, I'm wearing this for the older leering ladies."
More false assumptions:
1 - I'm not suggesting anyone dress for anyone else. They should dress in a way which flatters ... or merely suits ... their body.
2 - You infer I am a leering older man. You assume incorrectly ... again.

Okay, cak "got my dander up." Now I'm gonna broach another fashion trap with women. (I know I'm venturing onto thin ice with this one....)

Why, Why, Why... do girls wear these tops which appear to be designed to flaunt their nipples??? Geez!!!

Remember, I appreciate the female form, but give us guys a break, will ya? Please???

Some of the cases I've witnessed, or been told of:
1 - A client was wearing a whiplash collar. Obviously, I asked him "Why?" Embarrassed, he admitted to rear-ending a car at a Red Light because he was "distracted" by a girl on the sidewalk, wearing a flimsy camisole.
2 - I watched a guy in my club walk right into one of the weight machines, conking himself on the head, because he too, was distracted by a girl wearing .07mm of spandex.
3 - My across-the-street neighbor works in her yard wearing only a Jog Bra on top. (Well, "worked". One day last summer, I was talking in their driveway with her husband, and she walked out of the house, dressed as described above. I commented, "Geez, (Mary) you're making me blush."
Apparently I pushed (Tom's) button. He called out, "See, Mary, I told you so!" And he scolded her into the house. Thankfully, she's worn somethin other than underwear to work in the garden ever since.

Girls - We guys are very visual people. (And God surely knew what he was doing, because you are all lovely to behold!) But please ... save something for ... special occasions. Like your wedding night. (We cannot afford the increased insurance premiums...!)

I'm going to crawl into my bomb shelter and hide now....

I have a slight fat roll. I know my own business enough NOT to wear short shirts that will only make me look like Winnie the Pooh. ;) And shirts that make me look like my "headlamps" are on are also verboten. :)

Because I LIKE it this way. All females know this instinctively, and hence, the reason that I am provided with enjoyable visual stimuli throughout the spring and summer months They have no concern whatsoever for your fuddy duddy disapproval.

Remember, I appreciate the female form, but give us guys a break, will ya? Please???

I've been turning my head to look at at women passers by since I was a yungun' and I NEVER smashed my head or got whiplash. Your friends/colleagues are obviously idiots who can't do two things at the same time-i.e. walk and look. Or else, this isn't even true-just a fable-like way in introducing your happy little lecture on morality?....

Ahhhh, now HERE'S the core of the MESSAGE, finally, as part of Karl's Konservative agenda. This has NOTHING to do with "increased insurance premiums" or guys being visual people. This is just a good ole' homespin MORALITY LECTURE by none other than K2!

Everything you POST that isn't directly related to playing tennis, is somehow associated with your right wing views-"morality", politics, economics, etc. Is it not possible for you to keep that jive out of the mix? I don't see commies or "Kennedy-ites", or your bugaboo Barbara Streisand-Hollywood types turning practically every discussion into an ideological platform for their views...But being a pretentious holier-than-thou type, you obviously can't resist the opportunity, can you?

Your first post in this thread made sense-hip huggers ARE a fashion disaster for women with a certain body type, but I see that that was not a comment on contemporary fashions-it was an opening for this latest lesson in morality from K2. Just downright prudeism and a way for you to put your views front and center. You "People" have no conception of fun. Bunch of damn stiffs who're attempting, and partially succeeding in making this country feel like some depressed version of Cromwell's England.

You can lecture people on how to behave/dress, but other than the neighbor whom you intimidated, they aren't listening. Although it might scare you to visit there, you might want to take a look at NYC and the rest of the world that exists on the left and right coasts, far outside of the sphere of your "bedroom" community of conformity.

I notice how everybody is wearing mini skirts now, and the only thing I am upset about is that I always leave my leaf blower at home. The problem is there is this girl in one of my classes, nice girl, but really big. And she insists on wearing cloths like that, and dancing very ?raunchy? Yesterday she was wearing spandex that crawled up her *** crack to die. Made me wanna die also.

As I have stated in another post, these are my guidelines with respect to womens fashion.

- If the girl/woman in question looks good: the less surface area covered with clothes, the better.
- If the girl/woman is a horror to look at: wear a damn ski-suit! (even in summer, no excuses!)

I'm 16 and I wear low-rise jeans, short shirts, and mini-skirts...I think they look good, and I'm comfortable in them. Just so you know, i don't have a fat roll or anything, and i don't think that people that do should wear clothes like this, but unfortunately, many girl in my school insist upon still wearing them.

I also don't wear these clothes thinking about what old men and women are going to think about them...personally i don't think it's your business what i wear and the fact that you worry about it so much is a little pathetic. i don't try to attract old men..only young guys. If you look good, why should you need to cover up? It's summer...it's too hot to wear a ton of clothes anyway.

Agreed.

Such hositility...! You assume way too much. (Just like a previous poster.)

I never claimed otherwise. Thanks to some other posters, this (tangential) Red Herring keeps popping up.
If you look good, why should you need to cover up? It's summer...it's too hot to wear a ton of clothes anyway.
Then why wear clothing at all in your summer heat? Wouldn't that be even more refreshing?

10 pounds of **** in an 8-lb. bag? Not cute....unless you're into that Nate Allen/Eric Williams "breaking the huddle and walking to the line of scrimmage" look. (rotflmao!)

I don't walk around in compression shorts (after deciding which side, i.e. leg Jimbo and the Twins "load up" on). sigh.....

Phil: I just read in Ad Age that Adidas is putting out a woman's line of clothing called "NippleWare" and Nike is going to be "expanding" their Dri-Fit line to include a "Dri-Tit" line as well. On court this year, I haven't seen this many poppin' "top-hats" since the 1935 Fred Astaire movie of the same name. Your previous Barbara Steisand reference (speaking of movies) reminded me of a Billboard magazine story last week wherein producers approached her to do a cameo as the shark in the latest "JAWS" sequel. This will be contingent of course on the technical crew teaching her how to do the backstroke.

(imagine a trumpet/coronet with toliet bowl plunger "muffler" playing the "punchline lick" a la a Max Sennett comedy: "whaa--whaaaa!")

I think it's important to buy clothes that fit your body well. Not every teen should be wearing low-rise pants with an inch of midriff showing. Not everyone should pierce their belly buttons. But what are you going to do?

Phil, you need to calm down. Quit taking everything so serious, the guy is talking about a opinion. If you really feel he is preaching then move on. On the other hand, he does have a right to spout off about it. I'm a guy who likes women as much as the next guy, girls on average need to dress a little more modestly. It's still very possible to look "cute," "hot,"(etc.) and still look classy. This is far more attractive on the whole than skimpy clothing.
