Fastest Backhand Ever Hit

We are still talking about subjective impressions. Only number i saw is a suspect number on a wikipedia article: Nalbandian 110 miles per hour. Don't know about real measurement of ground strokes. But what i can say, is the follwing speculation: If Fat Nalby can make 110 miles, i cannot deny, that Rosewall made at least on occasion 80 miles. He faced some servers with the hardest serves in history, including Pancho, Ashe, Dibley or Tanner. And if he hit a perfect bh with the sweet spot in the middle if his racket head, even with wood or steel, his bh would lose only a few miles on the return. You can hit hard with wood, but the problem is consistency, because you need perfect timing with the much smaller sweet spot.

Did you watch the vids? The first two that I posted have radar gun measurements and one of Gasquet's backhand with a speed measurement has also been posted. Seeing the speed displayed in the video is much more convincing to me than even otherwise reliable sources quoting figures after the fact.

If Garcia- Lopez could hit a over 100 miles, Rosewall with his true impact and fast racket work could do it at the very least. But what instruments have they used? Where is the speed measured, at racket impact, over the net, or at the baseline of the other courtside?

too bad that Becker BH vs Mac at the '89 masters isn't on youtube....anyone that saw that match knows what shot I'm talking about.

I'm pretty sure the first time I saw any mention of radar being used on groundstrokes was around 2003. that isn't really a long time. And ATP doesn't put out a list of 'fastest groundies of the year' like they do with serves. so I'm skeptical about any article claiming any player has this 'record.'

groundstroke speed just a tv thing(at least if you attend an event you can keep track of the mph of every serve hit in a match. with groundies you only see the mph of groundies that the producer of the broadcast chooses to flash on the screen)

the official websites for the majors have fastest serve speed & average serve speed for every match. it would be nice to see that info for groundies.

Don't know about fastest overall, but the second one Federer hit versus Henman is the fastest in this thread. No question IMO.

Not sure. At racquet impact would be ideal because it helps to eliminate contingencies that arise from the conditions which are in no way indicative of the power of the stroke itself.

Laver's bh at 3:22 may be the hardest hit on this thread. And, with a Dunlop Fort no less.

Not a chance, IMO. Looks like one of the slower backhands posted, to me. A few of the other ones you posted of Laver even seem a fair bit quicker than that one.

The fastest ones from the older players posted so far are, I think, those two from Connors.
