well, the other big team of the 50´s against the team that " was never meant to be". A top class match wihere you can appreciate the very different abilities those 4 tennis masters bring up to table.

What to say about the Wonderkids? Hoad had the range, power, sheer athleticism, uncanny talent to hit any possible ( and some impossible ) shots and Rosewall was the perfection at the technichal point of view, with his fluent returns, volleys, groundies...Rosewall is fluency walking and also one of the best and more precise footworks ever. The talent of this team is off charts.

And they would be unbeatable if they could mix up the very low and extremely angled BH returns of muscless with the extraordinary wristy volleys of Hoad; which is something that they did very often.

But I still think Edberg and Jarryd, the greatest ever sweden team would have a fair chance. Not a big one but they would still have their chance. This team is my big sorrow in doubs .because, Edberg, who had a perfect taylor made doubles game didn´t play the foursomes from 1986 or so onwards. But he and Jarryd had had the time to show us what could we expect of them after their phenomenal exhibition at the 84 DC final..against all time greats Mc Enroe and Fleming.

Anders Jarryd was a perfect doubles player and he proved that with so much success with so many diverse mates. He takes back seat only to Mc Enroe for the title of the best single doubles player of the last 30 years. And I am not even sure about that.

His return, specially the two handed Bh was low, fast and agressive and would make life so much easier for his mate to crunch the volley.he was fast, nimble, menthally very agile and had that special positional sense that only the real real great double splayers in history have had.He is, by all means, one of the 10 best doubles players of all time. The mate ANYBODY would like to play with.

Stefan not only had the perfect S&V game and athleticism to back it up.What made him a perfect doubles player was his serve; his kick serve gave time to reach the net and alignate with his mate there.it is a very important point in doubles play. And Stefan had one of the best ever kick serves. And, of course, given his athleticism and fast reflexes and those of Jarryd, the poachings and crossings those guys would produce would get you completely out of breath.

Hoad and Rosewall would win it in 5.But, on the right day and with a bit more of time to play together, Stefan and Anders could beat any team, anytime, anywhere.

kiki, Hoad&Rosewall would rather win in three sets ;-)

Treblings, many thanks
Love Hoad poise at the end, great character
What is your doubs fantasy match?

Hewitt/McMillan against the two Maccas:) at Wimbledon preferrably
from all the doubles i´ve seen(other than on youtube)

from before my time, Hoad/Rosewall against Newk/Roche

The Maccas were great watching and clearly had a lot OF mutual understanding
They were my faves for some years since they beat so badly Fleming and Mac at two Wimbly finals

Paul McNamees biography is on my short list of tennis books i want to read in the near future.should be quite interesting

Funny fella.I do recall a doubs match on clay, it was an easy one and Mc Namara had recently recovered from one of his many injuries ( another bad case, BTW).Paul was completely drunk and on the changeovers, he was going some nuts.He kept on telling his mate " F(u)ck up and walk".Geez, still with no Mc Namee and one half of Mc Namara they sailed thorugh.

strangely enough, most of my fave tennis stories seem to include some aussies getting drunk on too much beer and winning anyway:)
hoad at roland garros one year before the final, if i remember correctly

Yeah. They all did partying but sanely, no drugs involved further an ocassional joint or so.

Laver himself recalls in his book the great drunk he had when celebrating his 69 GS at a NY disco.

Newcombe was a heavy beer drinker as well.Someone once wrotte he could drink beer for hours, play a long tennis match and then attend a hard business meeting...I don´t know if it is true or not but, heck, with his energy I do believe it.

Hoad, Fraser,Emerson,Stolle, they really had fun.

BTW Treblings.I am sure Hoad and Rosewall must have played at one point Newcombe and Roche.

The aussies were amazing in doubs.Any combination was possible because of their deep knowledge of doubs patterns and plots.Just think about Fred Stolle and Roy Emerson and how many success did they have with other partners.Stolle made a name for himself in the early 60´s with Bob Hewitt, before Hewitt moved to Southafrica and became a South african citizen.

in the 1981 USO sf, Stolle and John Newcombe were points away of beating the best version I can think of Mac and Fleming ( who were owning the tennis world in doubles except sometimes against the Macnamacs)...and they hadn´t played together for years¡¡¡

as I said, there must be some genetics involved..

In 79 Emerson and Stolle reached the semis as well. Reports state that they brought a cooler of beer to every match and refused to sit down on changeovers:)

haha, that is a good one.

Last time I saw them play it was an exhibitional against Laver and Davidson if I recall well.Stolle was at least half drunk and Emerson, a bit less, just a quarter. Those two guys were really party enhancers.

Roger Taylor was suposed to drink beer also during some changeovers.

Come think of it, another reason that explains aussie domination at doubs is that they really took it extremely seriously. They were just as proud of a good doubles win as they were of a singles win,It is a holly tradition there, like a different sport.

Hopman always instructed his pupils: " OK, you don´t play doubles, you don´t play singles"

They worked a lot on doubles drills and keep arranging matches with different combinations. The famous australian formation came as a result of this.

Look at this:

Hoad won with Hartwig,Fraser and Rosewall
Rosewall with Hoad and Stolle
Stolle with Rosewall, Hewitt and Emerson
Emerson with Fraser,Laver and Stolle
Newcombe with Fletcher and Roche
Laver with Bob Mark

even in later years we had

Edmondson with Marks and Warwick
Case with Masters and Dent
Mc Namee with Mc Namara and Cash
Fitzgerald with Frawley,Smid and Jarryd
and of curse, the Woodies

not to mention teams like Sedgman and Mc Gregor or Bromwich and Quist or Crawford and Mc Grath

it´s an interesting question really whether or not Hoad/Rosewall actually played against Newcombe/Roche. Or did Hoads injuries prevent that to happen?
does anyone on this forum know the answer?

treblings, They never met. Hoad/Rosewall played together till 1966 and as pros. Newcombe/Roche were amateurs at that time. It's a pity that these two greatest doubles formations never played against each other...

i was pretty sure you could answer that question:)
yes, it´s a pity

treblings, I'm sorry but Rosewall's career is my metier...;-)

Hoad/Rosewall had a short comeback in 1974 at the Sydney Indoors but lost in the first round. Hoad at that time had a belly coming from the beer drinkings wheras Muscles was slim as always...

what was Rosewall last semifinal as a pro player? was it Sidney indoors in 78?..or the Aussie Open in 77?

I mean Master Series equivalent tournaments and above that

Hoad was also awesome teamed with Trabert or Anderson.

He could play doubles with anyone.

kiki, Yes, it should be Sydney (Australian) Indoors, 1978, as it was a 4 stars event.

One year later Rosewall reached SF of Brisbane, Queensland Grasscourts, a minor event.

As late as 1982 (when Borg retired!) Muscles reached final of the NSW Hardcourts. (got this from Andrew Tas).

Real thing is that Edberg and Jarryd should have kept on playing and improving together. They had all time great written in their front but, unexplicably, Stefan let that chance pass by him.
