Favorite Movies of All Time

Okay, now I'm actually disturbed you watched Clockwork Orange . . . .
actually, to be perfectly honest it doesnt affect me. however, i do worry about the effect violence etc has on other people. many young kids in their teens today, affected by western culture over here, are heavily into drugs. brother (in college) tells me about it all the time. he doesnt believe that violence has an effect on viewers, i do.
in rare instances i do feel it can have a positive impact, yes i saw Passion of Christ and was deeply touched. Even the violence in Blood Diamond, i wept to see people in pain. but if violence is for entertainment (like amercian/pro wrestling, then i think its bad).
anyway, that's just my way of looking at things. don;t mind my views.

Big Lebowski
Wedding Singer
Matrix
Bull Durham
Top Gun
Drop Dead Gorgeous
One Flew over Cuckoo's Nest
Ocean's 11

These are ones I can watch over and over and not get bored.

Very good movie. I wouldn't say one of my all-time favorites, but definitely an excellent movie. Ulrich Mühe was outstanding.
Certainly, i am not sure there really is a "favorite movie", considering our tastes would change as we grow, as we learn more about life.
(i presume the last is true :-)

I liked Castaway a lot. For that matter anything with Tom Hanks in it.

anyone else liked "Lives of Others" (2006)?

Hmm. Either you're destined to be the next Pauline Kael, or uhm you're not really nine. I'm just saying. ;)

Yes, Lives of Others = good movie

Absolutely loved the sound design for that movie. I don't know whether you've ever seen it in a proper theatre (or a really decked out home system), but you should if you already like it. The engineering is so good, you could almost smell the sea in that flick.

haha. bro and dad are heavy movie buffs. i sometimes get to see something from their collection. but i am nowhere as refined as them. i have my weaknesses ... like any movie with Julia Roberts in it!

You mean as in her criticism for violence (as in Clockwork Orange). last year, my dad forbid me from seeing Citizen Kane cos it has too much violence. then he put on "A Bugs' Life" for me. Can you believe it, it was all about ants going to war with one another!

Stick to cartoons and Disney flicks, kid. That way, you'll be sheilded from the grim realities of life.

Lots of good ones on the list. Here are some come to mind, in no particular order.

One Flew over Cuckoo's Nest
The Seven Samurai
E.T.
Star Wars
Grease (for my wife)
Sound of Music
Toy Story (for the kids)

non theatrical:
Band of Brothers (awesome!)

One of my favorites but not many people know about...
Unbearable Lightness of Being <--- if you seen it, what do you think?

My god I thought Goodfellas and Casino were a million times better than The Departed.

Anyone like [Leon] The Professional or The Thin Red Line?

Sunrise (Murnau)
Bringing Up Baby (Hawks)
The Night of the Hunter (Laughton)
Lawrence of Arabia (Lean)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Leone)

My favorite film of recent years is Pan's Labyrinth (Del Toro).

Jaws
Man Who Would Be King
Lawrence of Arabia
To Kill A Mockingbird
Midnight Run
Vertigo
North by Northwest
Good, the Bad, & the Ugly
Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid
The Godfather

I don't know about favourite of all times, quite a few good impressive movies out there. Of the mainstream Anglosaxon recent ones, I liked Basic Instinct 2. I actually thought it was much better than the prequel. Did anybody else feel that way?

Judging by most of the responses in this thread, I'm guessing the average age of those who've responded so far is about 16? Am I right? ;)

Darwin's Nightmare

Darwin's Nightmare:

The movie is a good documentary on the weapons-for-fish trade in Tanzania; the cargo planes arrive daily with weapons from Europe, and take-off back to Europe with 50 tons of fish... while the locals are starving for food.

I found the bonus director's interview -- excellent, and the bonus documentary feature about the 1997 slaughter in Rwanda -- powerful as well. You'd need about 3.5 hr. to watch all three of them. It should be a required watching material for all high-schoolers who grow up spoiled, and don't know how other people's lives are.... Oh, but they do know what color nail-polish Paris Hilton and J-Lo used today!

The green mile is not my favourite but it's a bit under-rated jusdging by the responses in this thread. I thought it would be at least top ten for a lot of people.

I get it, you like Woody Allen, but Curse of the Jade Scorpion? It looks so out of place on that list.

Is it really that highly regarded by many today? I don't remember it being that a big a deal when it came out, & it certainly didn't get a 'new life' in the years since, like Shawshank getting to #1 on imdb, etc. haven't seen it since it came out, & have no real desire too. it seemed like the longest movie ever.

Ok, seriously, all you people need to watch Office Space.

um i believe you have my stapler.

Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended versions)
Indiana Jones Trilogy

Don't remember if I've posted here already, but I'm gonna add Across The Universe to my list.
